I think it's the referree's, they don't command any respect. They don't deserve any respect. I mean look at the case od Distan getting sent off for city today. Drogba handballs the ball (obviousely) and then scores, Distan complains to the ref and he gets a yellow card. During half time he takes the ball to the ref and the conversation goes like this...
Distan - "Why was I booked?"
Ref moving his hands to draw a ball in mid air - "Give me the ball"
Distan - "Why was I booked?"
Ref still drawing a ball in the air - "Give me the ball and go away"
Distan "I just want to know why I was booked"
Ref - "Okay you've had it" draws a second yellow and sends him off.
How is that keeping players under control, in Rugby the ref's get the players respect, they're an asset to the game not a hinderance to the players. If the referree's could stop treating footballers like primary school kid's at least the on-pitch attitude would be greatly reduced and that might filter into the crowds, though it might be too little alone for big changes.
Then you have the Liverpool derby, okay Gerrard should have been sent off, he kicked the ball away and then did a late challenege shortly after, the ref had no choice. But the straight red he gave in the second half was harsh, very harsh. The player had just come on and not long after makes a challenge that should have been a yellow card, the ref gives a straight red. Now if it was a player who'd been on for a while giving loads of little fouls away, I could understand, but it was his first challenge and not a red card one at that.
