The Dark Knight gets a sequel - The Dark Knight Rises!

What of the rumour of Johnny Depp playing the riddler, did those get discredited? I also can't help think of Catwoman because of that famous line Lucious says when he shows Wayne his new suit.

Yeah i'd love a final film from Nolan's directorial of Batman Series. But my most favorite batman film of all would still be Batman. I don't know why I can't make Dark Knight my best film. Maybe its because its full of stars. Quite honestly you gotta to admit, viewers got their most attention with the supporting actors. Its a hero movie and the feeling that you can't seem to empathize with Batman himself is the most critical part. Superb performances by eckhart, ledger and gary oldman(the best), brushes away bale. At the end of the film I can't seem to remember Batman at all. All I see in my mind is aftershocks of these 3 actors. The director should know how to deal with that.

Well, more news is emerging. There's (allegedly) an open casting call for a major female role, prompting speculation that Catwoman will be the villain; however, since Rachel Dawes is dead, the film needs a lead female, which does not neccessarily mean it will be Selina Kyle. Secondly, Nolan was apparently so happy with Tom Hardy - Eames in INCEPTION - that the British actor has been cast in an undisclosed role, believed to be a villain. However, the biggest news released overnight is that the film has a title: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (though I personally think that THE DARK KNIGHT RISING sounds better). There's been some speculation as to exactly what this means since Nolan has said the title of "The Dark Knight" refers to Harvey Dent just as much as it does Batman, though Aaron Eckhart has said that while he was interested in returning for a sequel, Nolan confirmed Dent is dead. "Rises" could really refer to anything from Batman rising up from public perception that he is a killer through to the darker side of Bruce Wayne's personality showing through (I'm thinking more of the Angel/Darla plot that dominated the second half of ANGEL's second season here, as opposed to the mishandled Phoenix in THE LAST STAND or the totally botched "dark Peter Parker" in SPIDERMAN 3). Nolan has also admitted that the Riddler will not be appearing in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and that it will finish up the story started in BATMAN BEGINS and continued in THE DARK KNIGHT.

Personally, I'd love to see Nolan pull a few characters from Batman's expanded rogues' gallery rather than handle the major villains because there's some really good content out there. Kevin Smith's Onomatopoeia would make for a great villain, though he'd probably be better off as a henchman like the Scarecrow. Harvey Bullock (with a rename to prevent confusion with Harvey Dent, like Jason Bard) would also be a great addition.

Okay, so some casting news has popped up overnight. Tom Hardy is definately in; he'll be playing Bane, not Hugo Strange. Hardy pretty much just has to show up and phone in whatever script Nolan gives him in order to out-do the Bane from BATMAN & ROBIN. Bane will probably be much closer to the cunning and intelligent supercriminal from the comics, thankfully.

Anne Hathaway (oh, yes!) is also in; she's been cast as Selina Kyle. There's no word on whether she'll be playing Catwoman (please, Mr. Nolan!), but she's in. It's a long way from THE PRINCESS DIARIES to THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

Her stints in Brokeback Mountain and Havoc convinced m she can bring the physical appeal and in Rachel Getting Married she convinced me she can act.

So, can I see Anne Hathaway as Catwoman?

Oh yes.

Tom Hardy I am unsure about because the only role of his I am really familiar with is Star Trek Nemesis.

You should try to get hold of Bronson, it's a low budget British movie about a notorious real life prisoner, a bit like the Australian movie "Chopper". Hardy plays the title character who is a psychopathic bare-knuckle boxer.

And, of course, INCEPTION. That's the role that landed him a place in RISES, though Bane is a far cry from the ambiguously gay British forger he played in INCEPTION.

Bane = Instant win.

Hell. Yes. Too bad this is (supposedly) the last movie, could definitely go the way of the actual Dark Knight story arc. Cast someone as Jean Paul!

Which I haven't seen. Baby and all. I've seen one film in the theaters in the past year.

Agreed. I think having Bruce have Robin still in training and then having Batman defeated by Bane in the end would be a great way to introduce a Robin trilogy, but I doubt that will happen.

Welcome to club (and thanks for the reminder...it's going to be another 3 years with Kid No.2 on the way). Just saw the Dark Knight last month, and I also felt Batman Begins was far better at telling a story; which means I'll see this next one in 2012 or 2013.

I just don't see a Robin movie holding up an entire plot, let alone three movies; that's like a Plasticman or Aquaman movie...No thanks.

I'm sorry but I have to ask...

WHERE IS ROBIN?
Nolan has said several times that his films won't deal with Robin. Batman is still very early in his career as a crime-fighter, so it's too early to take on a siekick. Which is totally understandable. I also think he might have had some trouble with Dick Grayson's origins - I don't think a teenage circus performer would work that well in the Nolanverse. That said, there's some pretty decent stuff in the Jason Todd storylines (unpopular as he was), particularly A Death In The Family and Todd returning as the Red Hood. Then again, Nolan would have to find a more-plausible explanation for Todd surviving the explosion that killed him other than Superboy Prime resetting reality in his escape from a prison dimension. And you probably couldn't touch on the Red Hodd at least until one film (and probbaly two to be safe) after Todd's introduction. Which means we probably wouldn't see him until BATMAN 5 or 6.

I'd like to see a reasonable interpretation of Nightwing eventually. That is probably hoping for a lot. As I've said before, until DC gets their IPs properly sorted, they'll never be able to roll on a massive number of characters like Marvel has been able to. I had assumed there would be a TDKR - Green Lantern tie in, but I was wrong. I was even hoping for some kind of connection to the new Superman film Nolan has been working on. Wrong on that as well. It appears the only franchise Nolan's Batman might connect to will be Green Arrow, and I haven't heard anything about Supermax in a long, long time.

Nah, Nolan won't go in for a GREEN LANTERN crossover. He's specifically designed his films to be based in reality, and he's removed all elements of the comics that touch on the supernatural. Given that Hal Jordan is part of an interplanetary police force (or whatever; I never got into the Green Lantern), there's no way he'd be included in the Nolanverse. Hell, I'm surprised that Marvel sanctioned Thor to appear in Joss Whedon's THE AVENGERS given that Jon Favreau kept the IRON MAN films similarly grounded in reality (although knowing Whedon, Thor's presence in THE AVENGERS won't be weird at all).

Besides, there's plenty of characters in the Batverse to make decent stories out of without resorting to cross-overs. I can see RISES using elements of PREY, KNIGHTFALL and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, the last of which I think has a very suitable ending for a Nolan film.

I think Nolan should at the very least be open to the idea of a Dick Grayson cameo in the 3rd film set before he even knew Bruce. I could see something like Bruce going to a function or event and bumping into Dick or even going to the circus and seeing the Grayson's perform. Robin is an important part of the franchise and putting in a few lines for be great nod. Nolan's Robin I could imagine would be a real treat to see, pity he doesn't seem to rate the boy wonder...

Robin.

Actually, I seriously doubt Nolan will end the trilogy in a way that would be easy for someone to pick up where he left off. I know that if I were him, I wouldn't want people to jeopardise my films a la Joel Schumacher. I suspect RISES could very well end like Frank Miller's THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, with Alfred dying and Bruce Wayne leading a group of followers - like the remains of the League of Shadows or the copybats - away from Gotham, looking to build them up as an army in the continuing war on crime. He could also be paralysed in the final fight with Bane, restricting him to a wheelchair and thus necessitating his army.

To save repetition, I draw you your attention back to this post from May.
And will just repeat this:

Not only has Robin, as a badass, supported his own comic line, but he then took on the role of Batman.

I think way too many people hear Robin and think:

That is part of the problem with the DC Universe on the whole, frankly. While Batman is for the most part grounded in a reasonable sense of "reality," most of their other IPs are not. Warner knows this, and this presumably is why they have (so far) stayed away from working towards a Justice League movie.

I've really grown to like The Green Lantern in the past few years, but I did not expect the film to be anything like what we saw in the trailer. It looks... believable, but then again, we can't tell too much from what we saw. Even having seen some of the goods at Comic-Con, they wouldn't give away too much. Still, it looks like more of an Iron Man style film than Nolan's Batman. Which is fine, but it does not work well with building a cohesive universe for DC.

The new Superman film on the other hand could get interesting. Being that both of the Nolan brothers are working on it makes me assume that it will be a little more gritty and realistic like Batman (leading to the possibility of a tie-in, or some kind of nod), having Snyder as a director puts a strange spin on it. I'm still not sure what to make of it, but we are quite a long time from seeing anything from it.

My understanding of this Thor movie is that it is going to be pretty scientifically based. If I recall the line from the trailer properly, "what your ancestors call magic, you now call science. Where I come from, they are one in the same." Marvel does a pretty good job controlling their IPs, streamlining them between the different story arcs. Although Iron Man ends up being the glue that ultimately holds all of these different films together, Thor is (apparently) going to add the rest of the layers. We're not sure if Hawkeye or The Hulk show up at the end, but it is likely one of the two.

I'm guessing that they break the Bat early on in this one, Selina comes in to do some Bat-work during his Bat-absence, and then once he is healthy, she and him take down Bane. Warner will probably force Nolan to tie up some loose ends, but keep the slightest of slight windows open in case they can wave enough cash in his face to do a fourth film.

Otherwise, we're looking at another reboot of Batman by the end of the decade.

If you're referring to opinion, I'd agree as I also like Batman Begins a bit more than The Dark Knight.

If you mean just being outdone, then, no. :P

OMG... sereously? I didnt think anyone liked Batman Begins more than The Dark Knight.... I dont see how anyone could think that. The Dark Knight was like... so freaking epic it was just AMAZING. Im not sure if any superhero movie will ever pass it. Hopefully the spiderman reboot will take a page from Nolan and make it much grittier and more realistic than the HORRIBLE toby mcguire versions. Also, the Iron man series is OK... I thought the newer Hulk was solid and hopefully the Captain America and Thor movies dont dissapoint so the Avengers movie can be good.

Im looking foreward to seeing the Bane backstory in the movie. I want scenes of him learning/training in that prison... that could be a pretty cool montage IMO...

Honestly, I like Iron Man and the newer Hulk movie better than both Batmans. And then I like Batman Begins better. By the end of The Dark Knight I was thinking, "I get it, must fix the city, be a shining example, blah, blah, blah."

I think Nolan's Batman films have portrayed what I have always felt about the darker Batman stories...get that man a Zoloft and a little psychotherapy. Worst case of PTSD I have ever seen in my life. Spiderman had similar motivations but still took some time to relax and have fun with his abilities.

Marvel had fun, but Nolan was going for 100% quality movie. While that is cool and all and makes the world take a serious look at superheroes for movies, that kid that used to run around with a blanket for a cape wonders where the fun went.

All the fun with the Bat went to Batman: Brave and the Bold. For a kid's show, it's awesome, and does a good job channeling the silver age oddities in the DC universe. Young Justice has a bit of the Bat too, and I kinda dig the whole Nick Fury secret agent nonsense they have going on there.

If we want to talk about which of the modern Batman stories are awesome, I have to say that Arkham Asylum has to be right there with Nolan's work. I really like how it brought all of the baddies together, dealt with some of Batman's instability issues, and had a good bit of action thrown in for good measure. I'm interested in seeing whether or not Arkham City can top it.

More news on RISES. The first one - if true - is a major hint towards the direction the story will take, so I'll spoilerise it:
Josh Pence - who played Tyler in THE SOCIAL NETWORK - has apparently been cast in the film as a young Ra's al Ghul, with his scenes to take place thirty years prior to the beginning of the trilogy
Secondly, filimg will not take place in Chicago, but rather in Pittsburgh.

:D

Anyone who knows Ra's knew that train incident didn't do him in. I really can't think of anything better to write right now, if it's true than it's a definite day one viewing for me.

The reports unanimously agree that any scenes with Pence will take place thirty years to the main plot. Ra's being immortal is too silly for Nolan's grounded-in-reality approach. Likewise the Lazarus Pits resurrecting someone.

Besides, if they wanted to bring Ra's al Ghul back, surely they'd just re-cast Liam Nesson in the role?

Maybe. If it's taking place in prior to the main plot (I read right over that somehow) I can only imagine they're going to tackle his philosophies and outlooks on the necessary circumstances to do what's absolutely necessary. There's a way Chris could bring back Ra's (or at least tease the possibility) without even having to mention the Pit; just attribute it to semi-natural rejuvenation that's reliant upon everything he knows.

Also, no doubt that Liam did a great job but I always felt the person who was imposing as Ra's actually was a better fit - which is ironic if you ask me.

All the reports unanimously agree that Pence will play a young Ra's al Ghul and that his scenes will take palce thirty years beforehand. Ra's has also been confirmed as dead by Nolan, since fans speculated that he could come back as he did in the comics. There is no "maybe" about it.
Also, the fake Ra's al Ghul in BEGINS was played by Ken Watanabe, who also played Saito in INCEPTION.
