I almost did something similar. Qualified 3rd, then got pushed into the sand coming out of T1 (brands hatch) by the eventual winner. Ended up in 16th place. Started flying through the field, only to get hit a couple of times drivers turning into me after being passed yet somehow I end up getting the worst of the penalties for it. I made it up to 5th but then the 15 sec penalty started increasing 1 sec at a time because I wasn't serving it so I decided to serve it and get off the racing line. Guy hits me anyways even though I was off the racing line on a straight, and I, yes I, somehow get a 14 sec penalty for it. Then , again trying to serve a penalty, some idiot punts me in the grass at the last corner, and I get penalty time for it. I had to pit. Came out of the pit 14th. Started working my way through the field again, made it to 8th, guy hits me after I pass him and I get 1 sec. Try to serve it before turn 5, yet even hitting the brakes wouldn't make the last 0.3sec go away there. I could've got 5th if not for that last penalty but was lucky to hold onto 7th.
All drivers were A or S. For the most part, I wasn't even bothered by the people that hit me other than maybe 2 of them. The rest were light bumps, that somehow got us all ridiculous penalties. They were pretty much all good racers but all it takes it close racing in GT Sport to net tons of undeserved penalties. This is the problem with GT Sport. If you can avoid the carnage, you're golden but even if you race clean, and make legitimate passes (AKA not dive bombs, or other dirty moves) there's a great chance you'll still get penalized like crazy and have your race ruined, while people that do blocking, or try to push you into the grass while going 2 wide get away with it.
Iracing has the same problem though, but the difference is, they don't assign blame, so they don't get it wrong. Honestly I think that would be better and I think it would teach people to be more careful too. As would real damage.
