I have always wondered what those vertical squigly lines are that appear miliseconds after impact. They look like vapour or something. I can't imagine how they get that high so quickly.
Actually, those are smoke rockets arrayed near the test range. Just before the time of the atomic explosion, they fire them upwards. Sometimes it's a single set, but sometimes there is an opposing set. The smoke trails leave a visual grid or set of parallel lines across the sky. Then viewing the images after the explosion, they can measure how the shockwave propogated above the ground. You can see them clearly here:DQuaNI've seen that vid many times.
