Media Factory's MF Bunko J Editor-in-Chief Taiji Misaka announced on Wednesday that Zero no Tsukaima (The Familiar of Zero) author Noboru Yamaguchi passed away on April 4 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 41.

Yamaguchi was writing game scenarios when he made his novel-writing debut in 2000 through the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint. He then published the first volume of his most famous work, the Zero no Tsukaima light novel series, through the MF Bunko J imprint in 2004. The series eventually amassed 20 main volumes, five side story volumes, and four anime seasons.

Yamaguchi had confirmed in 2011 that he had advanced-stage cancer that was originally considered inoperable. However, during an unrelated gallstone surgery, the cancerous growth was confirmed to have shrunk in size. Yamaguchi then learned that there was surgery that he could have that might cure the cancer. He reported later that year that this surgery ended without incident, although he returned to the hospital at the end of 2011.

Yamaguch had planned to end the Zero no Tsukaima light novels last year before his cancer diagnosis and subsequent operation. Media Factory published the 20th of 22 planned volumes in February of 2011. Zero no Tsukaima F, the fourth and final anime series, premiered in 2012.

Yamaguchi had just returned to work last year, and he wanted to resume his Zero no Tsukaima novels at the beginning of this year. However, he reported in November that this is unfeasible due to his most recent hospital stay for surgery, and apologized to his readers for the wait. He vowed to continue writing when his health returns "no matter what," and thanked everyone for the words of encouragement — in Japanese and in English.

Yamaguchi's family held a service on Tuesday.

RIP Yamaguchi.
I'd seen anime since I was 7 but Zero no Tsukaima is actually the first anime that opens me to more open world of manga and anime back in 2007. Sad to see the author pass away on such age. :(

I'm sad to hear about his passing, even though I don't know the guy. It sucks the most when authors/artists because they didn't get the chance to finish what they were doing.

Unfinished work sucks, period. I don't know how much Yamaguchi may have poured into the making of Zero no Tsukaima, but if he was passionate as any manga artist should be, then I'm pretty upset. Imagine you worked your butt off for YEARS to accomplish a goal and then denied by cancer. That really sucks and is really undeserving to be a victim of it.

Indeed, it's always sad when the author dies before they can end their work, no matter who they were. And to think this one of a few in the past few years I can recall. Years ago the author of the Kaze no Stigma light novels died, leaving that one forever incomplete, and the mangaka for the behemoth Shin Chan died in a hiking accident (However his work is being continued by his family and assistants, so it's going to go on for a few more decades probably.).

Something that would really suck is if the guy for this series died. He's been drawing just about every week for nearly 40 years, it's the longest manga in history by far.

yea... was kinda surprised when it was posting around on FB just now. Even though I never got to watch or read the manga, but from what all my friend that has watched and read, it was good. A sad loss, just like every other mangaka out there. :(

I don't want to sound like an ass nor do I wish for his misfortune, but I'm pretty sure in the span of 40 years, he would've already achieved his goals unless he was aiming for something like 50 years.

Resharing this beautiful drawing from earlier since it deserves appreciation:

That moment when all tension is released with one passionate kiss. [/dreamy]

Context?

You meet this super cute girl. She forces you to get involved in a non-sexual non-romantic relationship with her. She even blackmails you into it. What's going on is that you two go to the same school and live next door. There's a tiny hole in the wall that separates you and you two agree to "peep" on each other (imagine the invasion of privacy).

You get yourself into several relationships over the course of a year or so. During all this time, that girl had been watching you sleep with your girlfriend. Knowing that makes you frustrated, and you despise her for it. Despite that, there have been other tense moments where she comes to save you so it's clear she's a good girl. On numerous occasions you get very intimate with her, but your girlfriend inconveniently stops by your place and interrupts the moment. She's growing on you and her adorable face is hard to resist, yet you're already in a relationship so you got to be faithful to your girl.

Tension begins to build between your girlfriend and the girl next door when the latter announces she will stop the "peeping" after graduation, also stating she will disappear from his life afterwards. Externally, you're happy about it, but internally, you don't want that to end. When it finally happens, you get frustrated because you want to see her. You get into her apartment, find a note stuffed in that hole in the wall and read it. By the time you finish, you realized all this time you had actually loved this girl, but were too frustrated (by that blackmailing moment) to believe it. So all this time when you subconsciously thinking about her was a clear sign you cared more about her than any of the girlfriends you got with during this time. That's great and all, but the girl next door has already left.

You do all that is right and you break up with your girlfriend. Now you're chasing this girl down and you finally find her to settle things. She doesn't want to get with you anymore because she feels bad for peeping and blackmailing him, yet you've learned to forgive her. She makes a final request to not get together believing it's for the best. You screw her rules, grab her and join lips with the one you've wanted for years.

The tears make the pic. If they were just kissing it would be pretty random, but the tears do the speaking. Very well drawn too, that kind of interaction is 🤬 difficult to achieve. Nice Andy 👍

Hey, Madoka is pretty cute... unfortunately, so is everyone else. You can keep her, I'll have Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh...

You are a sick horrible pervert... Even if she is actually 18 by the end of the series... And even if she is basically as attractive as a cartoon character could be... Stop ruining my massively delayed childhood... :yuck:

Oh please, there are people much worse than me. I'm sorry if in such a horrible person. She's just so sexy in THAT pic, OTHERWISE she's a totally awesome girl you would love to hang out with. Oh, and the other people who post sexy pics of their favorite characters, what are they, huh?

I hope you weren't talking about the figurine.

Yes. Now I have TWO people against me? Fantastic, Mr. Fox! Okay fine, how's this:

I have a small crush on Sakaki. Nothing bad about that.

Better, yes?

I think I see why I never post here. I make the wrong choice of words, and this is what I get. I'll just leave this stuff to the 'true' anime fans and I'll just go away.

I get pretty much all of my crushes by accident. Ryuuko is slightly different in that I accidentally made her my best.

Also, just Touhouvania Sakuya? Get the real thing as well ;) (Sakuya is definitely my coolest crush but my main Touhou crush probably goes to Yuuka)

Hei
 this has made my morning.

Haha, go to hell, dude.

I remember one (amongst others that I won't go into detail in here ¬¬) that was really, really weird. We were commisioned by who knows who or what to take care of... a jar. The thing seemed to be empty but it also seemed to be life-or-death important, so there we were, Fuu in full armor and 2-meter sword, and I, sitting in two chairs in front of some incredibly long stairs, with a bottle in front of us. talking nonsense. That was it. That was all the dream. And it was pretty long if I remember well.

When I woke up I was like man, what a waste. I wish I could at least remember the conversation
