That's what a good story does IMO - it makes you feel sympathy, or at least understand most (if not every) characters in the story.
I don't think good characters have to be sympathetic, relatable, or likeable; I think they have to be believable. I personally strongly disliked Soryuu as a character, a least until there was more exposition towards the end, when she went from narcissistic jerk to a PTSD sufferer whom takes their troubles out on others. But it is her very unlikeability that makes her a good character, often for comedic purposes, sometimes for dramatic ones, but always in a way one could actually imagine, or may even have known, 14 year olds to act.
(Seriously, who didn't know some git like Asuka when they were in school?)
Shikinami, meanwhile, is made fairly likeable, but not likeable enough that one would actually want her to keep in Shinji's way for too lang. Also, the film seems to suddenly shovel a lot of character development onto her before suddenly activating the dummy system on her, without giving her anywhere near enough beforehand. It feels rather forced.
Perhaps that's why 2.22 suffers. It lacks the original's focus on character development. Actually, let me rephrase that. It moves all of the character development onto AYANAMI while putting very little focus on any of the others, not least Mari Sue, who just turns up, defeats some kind of angel, parachutes chest first into Shinji before sniffing him, steals an Eva, uses her German made Dragon Ball to up it's power level to OVER 9000, does something else, and then sells some merchandise to obsessive fans.
Gendo might be an absolute bollocks, but at least NGE and Rebuild have shown how he became a bollocks.
I thought Gendo was the most relatable character... No... Wait... That's Aoba... Scrap that... Maya... No... Kaworu. Definitely Kaworu. Or Haruhi. Haruhi is the most relatable NGE character. Wait. Wrong series. Kaworu it is then.
Anyway, I kind of want to watch 3.33 when it comes out, but part of me couldn't care less... I'm conflicted.
In other anime news, I'm hearing reports of a Grave Of The Fireflies / My Neighbour Totoro double bill coming to western cinemas soon.

I hope they're gonna show it with subs!
