That shot where P-Ko turns around and finally recognises Neptune was heart-wrenching. The creators of this anime have the awesome ability to take you through the full spectrum of emotions in a mere twenty minutes, and for that I respect them immensely. If this doesn't get a second series, I'll be extremely annoyed. The ending to episode 10 was nothing short of beautifully sad, and it'd be a great shame to see the continuity end there.
I didn't know that HdN was going to be so... moving. ;_;
> implying I don't know a good anime when I see one
Okay then.
But if you want me to take you seriously, calling the shows that I like "bottom-tier" for totally arbitrary reasons is basically the worst way of doing so. It puts you on the same level as art snobs and music elitists. I don't listen to people who seek that level.
Very quick of you to jump to such a conclusion, Extaticus.
I'm sure you'd understand the way I came off with such a bold statement if you have watched shows of deeper substance. I of course could be wrong about you, but at the same time I find it difficult to believe if someone who has sen a "good" show would also happen to think highly of Neptunia. To clear this up though, could you name me 3 other shows you've watched that you think are utmost spectacular?
Yeah, but they're a range of different emotions; the characters are fun, the situations they get into amuse me, and there are more than enough innuendos to keep me interested on a superficial level - but de-constructing it, the main players actually have a large amount of fleshed-out charm and personality to them, and the way their relationships evolve through the plot are (to me, at least) extremely interesting.
In a way, Neptunia represents what I regard as the "light-hearted anime stereotype" - but subverts and parodies that trope routinely and effectively enough for it to remain intellectually involving beyond just "lol cute characters" and "lol boobs". No, it doesn't match Elfen Lied for sadness and it doesn't match Evangelion for character depth - but its ability to seamlessly transition between comedy, drama, sexuality and sadness in such a short space of time makes it impressively balanced and (to that end) enjoyable.
If anything, the bright colours, big boobs and funny shenanigans only make the tragic bits stand out more; there's something quite upsetting about seeing brightly-coloured characters in a perfect, sparkling world becoming suddenly very depressed and emotional. It seems "wrong", and the fact that the show is usually so upbeat and jolly only makes that juxtaposition even harsher - yet it's all put together in a scenario that's so voyeuristic and removed from reality that you don't notice it suddenly take an emotional turn until it hits you.
One moment I was laughing at Plutia making suggestive gestures with her whip - and before I'd even really registered a transition, I could feel my heart jolt and the tears welling up in my eyes at the realisation that Peashy still remembered Neptune. It was incredibly touching.
But at its core, the show still retains the good feeling light-hearted fun and antics that got me hooked in the first place. An anime that can do that - actually, any piece of media that can do that - I regard highly. If you can suspend your disbelief and accept Hyperimension Neptunia as its own escapist reality while watching it, then I'm convinced that it's intricately developed enough to evoke any emotion.
(Of course, this is just my opinion; I'm no expert, but I truly saw something special in this show - though I fully understand if others don't like it in quite the same way)
Needless and Gurren Lagann, who comes up with these combo pictures?

Also, putting Elfen Lied on the same level as Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion? I'm at a loss for words.
^ Not really. I just finished Elfen Lied, somehow I found it even better than Eva (yeah, yeah, flame me then!). The only short comings was: it was too short (12 eps only) and the ending was somewhat unfinished (similar to Eva TV).
While I'm glad you were able to explain your thoughts, eXtaticus, I'm getting the impression that you haven't experienced other shows similar to Neptunia with less cookie-cutter, less overused elements. By no means am I trying to belittle you. I was trying to give you the impression that while Neptunia sits at a certain level (I was not arguing about this), there are plenty of shows of a higher caliber out there that I'm guessing you haven't watched. While you view Neptunia at a level of regard I personally don't agree with, I wonder how your view would change should you watch these shows. That is all.
Just finish the latest side story for the Fate Stay Night world.
From the middle towards the end of the series. Type-Moon shows its the common themes that it tends to have with the series. The fight sequences are really good but sadly this is a short 10 ep anime. I like how everything was put together and the smaller easter eggs and difficulty of each heroic spirit.
