The Highway Girl: Page 9 - The New Reina

The Clans of Speed

Page 1 - The Instructor

It's a fine Saturday at Suzuka Circuit, perfect for tearing up a high performance car.

A souped-up Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type RA is performing a shakedown test.

The twins named Shouji and Shinji Akiyama overlook the shakedown test.

8503588772_ff039559c3_c.jpg

Shinji: "You think that's enough?"

Shouji: "It's her choice."

8502483279_665e00c72b_c.jpg

Shouji: "We need her driving skills as well. With age comes experience."

8503587824_c1a812e847_c.jpg

The car stops in the pits right in front of the twins. A red-haired woman wearing eyeglasses and corporate attire steps out of the car.

Shouji: "How's the car, Sasori onee-san?"

Sasori: "It has better steering response. And I can exit the corners much faster."

Shinji: "It has 400 horsepower, and 70% of its power goes to the back. That explains the better steering."

Sasori: "But should we really do this? I mean what's the point of reigniting the flames of the past?"

Shouji: "The Kanonjis have enjoyed the spotlight for too long. It's time for us to steal it back. For centuries, our clan has been in rivalry with the Kanonji clan."

Sasori: "I know that. But why do we have to engage a race with them? You two are living in the past. Seesh. You know what, I love racing too, but I am not a war freak. So what if they are famous? Can't we be famous in other ways? Stealing the spotlight is not my thing."

Shinji: "It's time to show them who's the best, that's all."

Sasori: "Whatever. I gotta go home and finalize my lesson plan for the week. Just tell me when do you need me, okay? Take care."

Shinji: "Take care, nee-san!"

She leaves the track. While on her way home, Sasori thinks deeply.

Sasori: "I am 35 years old, I have a husband and a child. Teaching is my profession, and I am the oldest sibling in the family. How ironic, I can't seem to teach those twins a lesson.

But I have a thing for racing. I can't allow myself to lose, either..."

**********************************************************

It is Monday, and Sasori has been checking her lesson plan. After that, she leaves the faculty room and enters a classroom.

The class is rather quiet, and after exchanging greetings, she immediately starts her science lesson. She writes a chemistry formula on the board, and she uses to randomly call a student to solve her formula. She points at Samui, who is just playing with his pencil on his desk.

Sasori: "Kobayashi-kun, can you please solve the formula? What would be the chemical compound of Silver and Oxygen?"

Samui: "Ummmm.... uhhh...."

Sasori: "Kobayashi-kun, that's strange. You can answer this. Is something wrong?"

Samui: "Let me try... Ummmmm.... Silver oxate? Am I right?"

Sasori: "Incorrect."

Samui: "Oh. I'm sorry..."

When everyone is dismissed, Sasori returns to the faculty room to pack her things so she could go home.

As she is on the way to the school gates, she sees Samui sitting on the bench overlooking the tennis court. She approaches the boy.

Sasori: "Kobayashi-kun, you plan on staying here until evening? I always see you sitting there looking at that tennis court."

Samui: "Sasori-sensei, I'm about to go home too."

Sasori: "I knew it. You miss him, don't you?"

Samui: "Yes..."

Sasori: "Hiramoto-kun was my student too. He's average just like you, but he brings pride to our school's tennis team."

Samui: "On Fridays, I play in that court just to hone my skills."

Sasori: "Honing your skills is an important thing, like sharpening your Katana."

Samui: "I agree, Sensei. Well, sorry to cut this short, but I gotta go home."

Sasori: "Okay. Don't forget to study for the test tomorrow, okay?"

Samui: "Understood."

**********************************************************

Samui arrives at his home in Harajuku. He sees a Honda NSX Type R (NA2) parked in front.

8503592448_05bf405b06_c.jpg

Samui: "Ehhh??? I don't expect a visitor here."

8503589862_bf7ef8c9dc_c.jpg

Then Tatsuru Ichishima, founder of Spoon Sports, goes behind Samui.

Tatsuru: "I think it's time for you to drive it."

Samui: "Whoa! You surprised me there, Ichishima-san!"

Tatsuru: "Hehehehehe... since when was the last time you saw that car?"

Samui: "About 10 years ago, I think..."

Tatsuru: "Exactly. Your mother bought it in hopes that you could achieve your dreams with that car."

8503589690_0e9e86ab60_c.jpg

Samui: "What do you mean? I thought it was her car."

Tatsuru: "It's yours, dummy. Knowing that you are a Kanonji by blood, she foresees that you will be a great racer like Michiharu Kanonji. However, she decided that it would be dangerous for you, hence she asked to keep it in my garage."

Samui: "I see..."

8503589258_b1e05bb3de_c.jpg

Tatsuru: "Your father and I were the best of friends back then. That's the very reason why I am looking after you. And with your mother gone, I am now like a parent to you. Now is the right time for you to grow. Time for you to get out of your comfort zone. You'll never improve as a racer if you are stuck with the CR-Z!"

Hey there, guys! I'm sorry that I wasn't around in the first page. With a lot of commitments to attend to, I wasn't able to narrate what I did.

Well, I met first with my architects to plan out for our new home...

...just in front of Okaasan's home. I want to take care of her, since she's already old. But at least we still have our privacy and a home for my 2 children.

And then, I did another taping for my cooking channel in YouTube. I almost burned myself in that recipe. That is something that I think even homemakers can't do...

After that, I picked up little Ben from school and then bought some school supplies he need for his project. When I arrived home, I volunteered to help him finish it, and it took a whole night, even while little Ben is sleeping.

Man, what a day that was. And I only got 3 hours of sleep...

Yawn.

At sunset, I call up Takanori, and even Samui to have a meeting. This is not a Dream Alliance meeting, but this has something to do with that upcoming "war". I haven't forgotten about it. Takanori arrives on time, but as for Samui...

Takanori: "Eh??? Hey, he's late."

Takuma: "Dummy, Harajuku is one of the most congested places in Tokyo. So it's normal for him to be stuck in traffic jams."

Takanori: "He should just take a train. The train station is just nearby here."

Takuma: "He told me via SMS that he wants to show something..."

I hear an idle exhaust. Takanori and I come out. What the...!? He owns an NSX!? TYPE R NSX!!!

Takanori: "Whoa..."

8506084515_7e564aa91a_c.jpg

Takuma: "You're making me jealous, Samui."

Samui: "I'm sorry I'm late."

8506083919_a12ae9d381_c.jpg

Takuma: "Knowing the traffic situation in Harajuku, it's okay. And besides, you got one hell of a car."

Samui: "My mother bought this for me in hopes that I could be a great racer. But she feared the dangers of racing, hence she kept it in Ichishima-san's garage for 10 years."

Takanori: "But the engine sounds healthy."

Samui: "Ichishima-san maintains the car throughout that time span. He runs it just to make sure that it works. Though it only ran 1000 kilometers."

Takuma: "You said that you want to show something. I assume it's that car."

Samui: "Indeed. It drives... very differently. The steering is heavier than the CR-Z's, and I sometimes make the car stall because of the clutch."

Takuma: "The NSX Type R is built for track racing in mind. It's devoid of creature comforts and driver aids to make it a proper driver's car."

Takanori: "And it's rear-wheel drive!"

Samui: "I don't really get the concept of a rear-wheel drive car."

Takuma: "I expect you to say that, since you drive the CR-Z ever since you got your license."

Takanori: "I guess taking it to the track will spell the difference between a front wheel drive and a rear wheel drive car."

Takuma: "Anyway, let's head in. We have a meeting, right?"

And so we did. Okaasan served tea for us.

Takuma: "Samui, I intended to call you out because there is an upcoming series of races."

Takanori: "And we need your skill. Seeing that you have potential, and as well as a relative, we decided to nurture you and your skills."

Samui: "But... I'm not that great as you two."

Takanori: "Of course you do! You just have to tap that power that lies within you. And we'll help you do that!"

Takuma: "A rival clan, named the Akiyama clan, issued a challenge. They have reignited the rivalry that spanned for centuries. To be honest, I find it stupid and childish. They also have a senile old man pulling the strings."

Samui: "Well, I guess I have to hone my skills, then. I plan to go to Suzuka this weekend. I want to test the NSX's capabilities. I... need your help."

Takuma: "I'm sorry. As much as I am more than willing to help you out, I have commitments to attend to."

Takanori: "Me too. I'm sorry."

Samui: "Is that so? It's okay. No worries, I have to find it out myself."

**********************************************************

And so, Samui heads to Suzuka Circuit alone on a Saturday. After taking a leak in the bathroom, he suddenly feels a cold air that passed on his shoulder.

Samui: "Huh? That's odd... It's warm today, yet I felt a sudden cold breeze."

He sets off immediately, and he floors the NSX R at full throttle.

Samui: "Whoa! That acceleration! The responsiveness and then the high revving engine!"

On the first corner, he goes for it, and the car oversteers. Samui reflexively applies the opposite lock.

8507195882_9ce3bbd90c_c.jpg

Samui: "Whaa!!! What is this!?"

8507195556_63f2de092e_c.jpg

Samui: "It loses control! I have to catch it!"

8506084447_bf08c033c2_c.jpg

Samui: "I guess I have to take it slow. I don't want that to happen again..."

Then at the next corner, he enters the same speed like he used to in his CR-Z, however the NSX oversteers once again, and it finally loses control.

Samui: "Aaaaaaaaaaahhhh! I don't want to die!!!"

8506165613_6892272230_c.jpg

8506084293_31eae6b9ea_c.jpg

Samui: "Whew... I don't want to break this car. I'm so pathetic! I only have so little knowledge on cars!"

"Don't give up! You have a very nice car! It would be great if you have the confidence and determination!"

Samui: "What!? I'm hearing a voice..."

Then Nobuhiko's soul appears on the passenger seat.

Samui: "Waaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!! A ghost! A ghost!"

Nobuhiko: "Relax, buddy. I am not here to spook you. Wow, you have grown..."

Samui: "S... Senpai!?"

Nobuhiko: "You're doing great."

Samui: "Really!? You call that great!? I almost killed myself!"

Nobuhiko: "It takes practice to drive a rear-wheel drive car on the track. Plus, with the mid-engined layout, you can take on the corners like there's no tomorrow!"

Samui: "Ummmm... what?"

Nobuhiko: "Let's go. Move the car. It takes reflexes... a tennis player's reflexes to master a rear-wheel drive car. You are an ace in tennis, and you can apply it in racing too!"

Samui: "O... Okay."

8506086095_fbee76fcd0_c.jpg

Samui: "This is creepy... a ghost will teach me a lesson. But I'm very happy to see you again, Nobu-senpai!"

Samui's tears flow out from his eyes upon seeing his inspiration once again...

Nobuhiko's ghost reminds me of Chef Auguste Gusteau (spelling?) in Pixar's Ratatouille. I just can't depict this situation in any other way, except with burning rubber of course.

The appearance of Nobuhiko's ghost somehow reminds me of the scene in The Dark Knight Rises where Ras Al Ghul appears in Bruce Wayne's underground cell.

I also like how Samui struggling to handle the NSX is vaguely similar to how Takumi was having issues with the Impreza in Initial D Fourth Stage

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate them and they are one of the reasons why I keep on writing.

Yes, I based Samui's struggle in the NSX from Takumi's 4WD complex in his father's Impreza. Though Takumi already had a 4WD complex when he was chased by it.

Nobuhiko will play a part in Samui's growth. I kinda regretted killing Nobuhiko off the story, actually. :guilty: That's why he played a posthumous role in the last part of Dream Alliance, and vaguely present in The Nurburgring Legend (as his racer data is being used by the android Nigel).

Oh, the next story might not be a "Takuma Gaiden" anymore. It would definitely highlight the growth of Samui.

Samui might just be the next Nobuhiko Hiramoto...

Next page will be posted later.

Page 3 - Senpai and Kouhai

Wiping off his tears, Samui is very happy to see Nobuhiko.

Nobuhiko: "Samui-kun, I'm very happy to see you. And you have improved a lot, especially in tennis! I bet you could beat me."

Samui: "Why did you have to go!? You have no idea how the team misses you!"

Nobuhiko: "I know you'll react this way... It's kinda complicated to explain."

Samui: "I don't know what to do!"

Nobuhiko: "You're with the Kanonjis now. You will turn into a great racer thanks to them. The Kanonji twins are the greatest people I have ever known.

Now, enough crying. Let's go. Controlling a rear-wheel drive car is like doing a wall practice in tennis! You have to control your strength when hitting the ball! A rear-wheel drive car is like a tennis ball!"

8510207054_eb829a80c1_c.jpg

Nobuhiko: "Now brake."

Samui: "Okay. Heel-and-toe..."

8509097709_2502db49f2_c.jpg

Nobuhiko: "Tuck the car in. Bring it to the apex. Don't steer abruptly."

8509097839_5b89eceb1b_c.jpg

Samui: "What's next?"

Nobuhiko: "Just step on the accelerator halfway. Too much of it can either lead you to oversteer or understeer depending on the car."

Samui: "Wow... I can control it. The car is stable!"

8509097373_51e155a4e1_c.jpg

Nobuhiko: "Exiting the hairpin, now is the time to floor it!"

8509097373_51e155a4e1_c.jpg

8509097213_0e896dc91b_c.jpg

Nobuhiko: "Apply a bit of countersteer there. Steer at the opposite direction when the car's tail wiggles out until you catch it back to control. It's normal for a rear-wheel drive car to slide. It's not broken or anything, it's part of its dynamics."

Samui: "I get it! It really is similar to a wall practice in tennis! Too much strength can make the ball bounce back so strong and fast that you can't catch it to volley back!"

Nobuhiko: "Exactly! You have to be in control with the car like this at all times! See? You are a skillful racer too!"

8509096445_13d77063d1_c.jpg

Nobuhiko: "The same principle applies here, though you have to be faster this time."

Samui: "Roger, Senpai!"

Nobuhiko: "Now then, you are approaching at a high speed corner. Brake until you slow down to 180 km/h."

8509096111_a07f1e4526_c.jpg

Nobuhiko: "This time, floor it all the way down."

Samui: "Why? Oh, the car is still on the road."

8509095879_a6c1058d57_c.jpg

Nobuhiko: "Downforce works at its best at high speed. Downforce is a downward pressure that pushes the car down, hence keeping the car firm to the ground and, in turn, improves stability. In high speed cornering, downforce plays a key role. This NSX is known for it."

Samui: "I got it. Now, I'm braking once again to the chicane."

Nobuhiko: "Accelerator control plays a part here as well. To flick the car properly to the opposite direction, just be on half throttle."

8510204932_070dccb8c4_c.jpg

Nobuhiko: "Then go back to full throttle once you steer to the left. Apply countersteer when needed. Actually, Takuma-san should be teaching you about accelerator control. He's best known for it, hehehehehe..."

8510204934_87d4bbf216_c.jpg

Samui: "Now I can drive this without problem! Well, I just have to practice with this often to fully master it."

Nobuhiko: "Indeed! You will be a great racer someday. I am so proud of you right now."

8509095449_517eb63823_c.jpg

After stopping the car, Samui once again starts to cry.

Samui: "Thank you... thank you very much, Nobu-senpai!"

Nobuhiko: "You're crying again?"

Samui: "I'm just... so happy to see you! Though this may be the last!"

Nobuhiko: "You can do this. You will succeed in life even without me. I will be watching your every success story. I am already so proud of you when you took the leadership of the school's tennis team when I joined the Dream Alliance. Now, with you being a racer, you would surely make it! After all, you are a Kanonji! A Kanonji never gives up! A Kanonji has flames of determination! It's time for you to ignite your own!"

Samui: "Thank you for your advice! And also for the lecture! I will never, ever forget you! You are the greatest Senpai in the world! No one will ever come close to you!"

Nobuhiko: "Except for one, I think. And that's you..."

Samui: "We'll see about that."

Nobuhiko: "I guess this is farewell. I will always be proud of you. Just stay strong and always be confident."

Nobuhiko's soul now disperses into tiny balls of light. Samui gets out of the car and looks up at the sky.

Samui: "Thank you, Nobu-senpai. You gave me the strength to face this challenge. I will be as great as the Kanonji twins. I will never let them down!"

Samui arrives home in Tokyo. He steps out of the car in a cheerful mood.

8509102421_cfffe57114_c.jpg

Samui: "Today is such a great day. You and I are now ready to face the challenge. You are such an amazing car, NSX-kun."

**********************************************************

The next day, Samui returns home from his window shopping. He is taken by surprise as the NSX is out of sight.

Samui: "Huh!? Where's NSX-kun!?"

8509105797_5b02961389_c.jpg

8510211040_e3a5db007c_c.jpg

He sees a note stuck on the gate.

I have heard from Takanori Kanonji that you will be racing. So I decided to take the NSX back to my garage to work on it. I still have the duplicate key with me. I will be working on it for the entire week. I promise you, you will like it even more once you drive it next time.

Oh, tell the twins that their Mom makes good Mochi. You should try some.

Sincerely yours,

Tatsuru Ichishima

Samui: "That old geezer took the car? Oh well, since I am still studying, it might be as well okay if NSX-kun is with Ichishima-san. After all, he knows a lot more about the car than I do."

Another week has started, and then one Wednesday noon at Mt. Aso...

From now on, whenever i race on Suzuka, i will imagine Nobuhiko's nurtures towards Samui should i struggle (Dunlop and 200R has screech marks with my tyre treads on it :ouch: ), and maybe stop by the 130R should i reach in it time during warm up. Rereading Nobuhiko's death bits on The Dream Alliance is the most heartbreaking thing. No offence to those who think the twins (later proven false) assassinations, Axel's accident or Sir Ben's sacrifice seem sadder.

Seeing this, i would probably expect Axel as a ethereal form soon enough, with Michiharu in Takuma's dream, and Sir Ben's spirit on the Indy. And i think we've literally exited Takuma Gaiden if it wasn't for the clan wars.

Page 4 - Spoon-fed to Perfection

It's a productive Thursday so far, and I have once again set a meeting in the Mochi shop in the afternoon, right after Samui goes off from school.

When he arrived, I saw a weary look on his face. Well, he spends the whole day in school... duh.

But not the typical tired face. He actually looks depressed...

Takanori: "Samui! Oh you have arrived."

Samui: "Good afternoon, guys."

Takuma: "Seems that you're depressed."

Samui: "I'm just tired."

Takuma: "One can easily tell a tired face and a depressed face. You have the latter."

Samui: "I have started to love the NSX. But just as I am beginning to enjoy it, Ichishima-san took the car once again to work on it. That car urges me to drive it even more."

Takanori: "Glad to hear it! I'm sure Ichishima-san wants it to be ready for the race. I actually told him that you'll be racing."

Samui: "You could have asked permission from me first. I want to drive it even more."

Takuma: "You'll get to drive it, don't worry. Plus, you know Tatsuru Ichishima's prowess as a tuner. He is being worshiped by Honda enthusiasts around the world."

Samui: "Eh? That old geezer is famous around the world?"

Takanori: "It's surprising that you are not aware of his popularity. He transforms Hondas into beasts in the battlefield!"

Samui: "Sorry... I'm not that aware of things happening in the racing world. I guess I'll be aware soon enough."

Takanori: "Speaking of the NSX, I have read a racing blog yesterday about it. A blogger said that he saw an NSX running at Tsukuba for the entire week. It was reported to break the 1-minute barrier."

Samui: "That could have been a different NSX. NSXs are surely potent."

Takanori: "Yeah, I got banned in a GT5 Online room because I used it."

Takuma: "I was the one who kicked you out from that room. I was playing GT5 when I was in Europe months ago."

Takanori: "Why, you! You're always mean... and a troll!"

Takuma: "Back to business, the race will be on Saturday afternoon in Suzuka."

Samui: "I see. I just hope Ichishima-san returns it to me by tomorrow; or Saturday morning..."

Takanori: "I'm sure he will keep his word. He wants what's best for a Honda."

**********************************************************

Meanwhile, in Tsukuba Circuit...

8513180078_1061b417a8_c.jpg

Tatsuru: "Wonderful... Just wonderful!"

8512067171_7e818c5c8a_c.jpg

Tatsuru: "It's much more stable in the corners now. The suspension might be hard for my taste, but it is actually helpful."

8512067053_db702403b4_c.jpg

Tatsuru: "That little Samui will surely enjoy this. This car would be his stepping stone."

8513179642_855c668959_c.jpg

Tatsuru: "And also the one that will secure his future."

8513179386_16eafe94b6_c.jpg

He sets a lap time of 58.860 seconds. Tatsuru puts up a smile on his face.

Tatsuru: "A new personal best."

Page 5 - Waiting

Friday, the day before the first race against the Akiyamas. Samui is still longing for his NSX. He is doing a tennis wall practice at the school's tennis court since the class is over. Sasori comes up to talk to him.

Sasori: "You're really good!"

Samui: "Sensei? Oh, good afternoon."

Sasori: "I just finished checking the test. And I gotta say, you are doing good. Good, but not great, though."

Samui: "I'm studying hard when it comes to stuff like that. Oh, by the way, about the report... I can't submit it today, but I will submit it tomorrow via E-mail, just as you instructed."

Sasori: "That's a bit late than I expected. Okay, I'll let you. Besides, I have something to do tomorrow."

Samui: "I'll submit it the first thing in the morning! I promise."

Sasori: "Better keep your word, boy. Tomorrow, I'll be heading to Suzuka Circuit to have a race. I'm sure you're aware that I do racing too."

Samui: "Yes. Oh, I'll be heading there too..."

Sasori: "Really!? Are you going to watch?"

Samui: "Um, yes."

Sasori: "Glad to hear it. Okay then, I'll go. See you tomorrow."

When the instructor left, Samui then sits on a bench to cool off for a while.

Samui: "NSX-kun, where are you? I'm so eager to drive you. I wish good luck to the Kanonji twins racing tomorrow. I might not even go. I'll probably just be in their way."

Then he stands up, carrying along his racket and ball and then leaves the campus.

**********************************************************

Today, the house is finally finished. I'll set a day when to move all my things there. Finally, I'm having a home for my own family!

And what a pleasant surprise, Samui enters the Mochi shop. He bought some Mochi. I quickly entered the shop. Man, he looks so cool in a tennis player outfit.

Samui: "Good afternoon, Itoko..."

Takuma: "Practicing, I assume."

Samui: "Indeed. I did 200 volleys in the wall practice today."

What!? 200 volleys??? Man, I can't even get past 20!

Takuma: "That's awesome."

Samui: "But I am no match against Nobu-senpai. I wonder when can I beat his 500 volley record..."

Takuma: "Just be inspired and determined, and you'll beat his record."

Man.... I'll be so dead if I face both Nobuhiko and Samui in a tennis match.

Samui: "Ummmmm... I think I can't go tomorrow."

Takuma: "Why? Well, you will be the one racing tomorrow!"

Samui: "Really!? I was hoping that one of you could race..."

Takuma: "Your NSX is still not around?"

Samui: "Yes."

Takuma: "I'm sure it's being rigorously tested. You can't just tune a car and race immediately. You have to do some series of tests. One week is even too short to test a tuned car. Though I am hoping that you'll have it by tomorrow."

Samui: "Me too."

**********************************************************

The Spoon-tuned NSX Type R is at Suzuka Circuit, having a final shakedown run.

Tatsuru is at the pit lane, just watching the car pass by at the main straight.

8516125076_887888bc16_c.jpg

Tatsuru: "I could have tested it a bit longer. But Samui-kun needs it by tomorrow."

8515008609_f286a99058_c.jpg

Tatsuru: "Though it is already locked and loaded for tomorrow's race. I just have to be sure on the settings."

8515008301_8c7f515ccc_c.jpg

Tatsuru: "Samui-kun... the car will grow together with you."

8516123492_aa9327f4c6_c.jpg

8516123350_f144a16416_c.jpg

The car sets a lap time of 2 minutes and 13.8 seconds.

Tatsuru: "Impressive! Faster than I expected. My target was 2 minutes and 15 seconds."

Upon returning to the pits, Tatsuru shows a thumbs up. Getting out of the car is the 37-year old Indy 500 driver named Takuma Sato.

Tatsuru: "At least you still haven't lost your touch in race circuits. I thought you're very used in racing in ovals."

Takuma Sato: "I missed the days racing in BAR Honda. Driving this car reminded me of those days."

Tatsuru: "So how is it?"

Takuma Sato: "It's amazing. The car is very close to a racing car. Oversteer is not much of an issue anymore. I can step on the pedal even earlier at the corner exits without the risk of excessive wheelspin."

Tatsuru: "Glad to hear it. Wheelspin was one of my issues in that car. Good thing I fiddled with the LSD at the last minute. Oh, thank you for taking your time testing this car."

Takuma Sato: " You're very welcome. But you know, I am here too because I want to race someone. It can wait, though. I'm not rushing it."

Tatsuru: "Who is it?"

Takuma Sato: "The one who has the same name as mine..."

End of Page 5

From the way I saw Sato driving when I was at the Toronto Indycar race, I'll be surprised if he doesn't crash into Takuma or spin himself out like he did at the Indy 500.

The Takuma vs. Takuma race will signal the end of the entire Takuma Gaiden story.

Though I am not sure if the race would be:

RX-7 TC vs. HSV-010 GT

or

Formula Gran Turismo duel in Indianapolis Motor Speedway Oval

And also, I am not sure if I will end the story with the winner or just the 2 of them will just start the race.

Oh, I will also lend the black Impreza to one of you who is free to do a duel for the story...

Page 6 - Nobu-senpai's Advice

Early in the morning, at around 5 am, I am jogging. There is no traffic around, and I wish it's like that the entire Saturday.

The three of us will head to Suzuka shortly. Actually, I'm worried about Samui since he told me that his NSX has not yet arrived. It is embarrassing if I would postpone the match. After all, the Akiyamas are hungry for a match.

If only I have Tatsuru Ichishima's number....

I stopped by at a nearby convenience store after an hour of jogging. I purchased a drink to cool me down. While I head out, I suddenly see a white NSX with a carbon hood passing by at high speed. It's actually heading to Harajuku. Could it be?

I head back home and then prepare breakfast for little Ben and for my wife, Kokoro. Takanori told me that Oyaji makes good breakfast, will I be able to put a smile on them once they taste my breakfast?

Then Takanori calls up...

Takuma: "What is it, my blundering twin? Why call this early?"

Takanori: "I'm excited to see Samui race! But, has he gotten his NSX back?"

Takuma: "As of midnight, he still doesn't have it."

Takanori: "Awwwww.... what shall we do?"

Takuma: "If we ran out of options, then we will postpone it for next week."

Takanori: "Hey, it's not easy to reserve at Suzuka!"

Takuma: "I know..."

Takanori: "I don't know what to do right now..."

**********************************************************

Samui wakes up at 8 am. As usual, he looks out at the window, but he is delighted to see his NSX back.

When he goes out, he sees the visual changes.

Samui: "A carbon-fiber hood, and black rims."

Then he checks the inside, and he sees oil and water temperature gauges at the middle of the dashboard.

Samui: "It's like my CR-Z, I guess these are necessary, huh?"

Then Takuma calls up.

Samui: "Oh, hello.... good morning."

Takuma: "So, you got the car now?"

Samui: "Indeed. When I woke up, I immediately saw it. Perhaps it arrived while I was sleeping..."

Takuma: "I knew it. I guess this means you are ready to race. Let's meet up in the Mochi shop. Now."

Samui: "Oh... okay."

Samui proceeds to the meeting place as instructed. Takuma is impressed by the modifications.

Takuma: "As expected from Tatsuru Ichishima. A carbon fiber hood to save weight, and black rims to improve the look. Spoon-tuned Hondas are sleepers."

Samui: "The exhaust is also new."

Takuma: "Well, I can tell. I'm sure you'll find it easier to drive that NSX now."

Samui: "I expect it to. Besides, I have driven a tuned car before, so I guess it should be better."

Takuma: "Let's go. We shall not waste time."

**********************************************************

The three arrive at Suzuka at 10 am. The Akiyamas are there as early as 8 in the morning for practice runs.

Samui noticed three vans ever since they left Tokyo. He is curious as to why.

Samui: "Takanori, why do we have those 3 vans?"

Takanori: "Well, we have to be prepared for unforeseen damages. They contain spare parts."

Samui: "Really? I can already feel the tension already. Do I even deserve to be here? Look at us, it's like we're in a championship race!"

Takanori: "Aniki would not pick a racer randomly. There is a reason why he picked you. Besides, Aniki and I will guide you! We are a family!"

When Sasori's black Impreza arrives the pits, Samui is shocked to see Sasori stepping out of the car.

Sasori: "So, you are here to watch, Samui?"

Takuma: "I'm afraid not... He is your opponent."

The teacher is very shocked at the revelation.

Sasori: "What!?"

Takuma: "It's true. Well, you know him?"

Sasori: "He's... my student!"

Samui: "I guess it's time for you to know, Sensei. I am Samui Kanonji. Kobayashi is my mother's maiden name. I got it since my mother raised me all of my life."

Sasori: "I can't believe it!"

The Akiyama twins join the conversation.

Shinji: "Seems that we're having a nice rendezvous here."

Shouji: "We will have 3 laps. Whoever crosses the finish line first, wins the race."

Takuma: "Got it."

Sasori is preparing herself for the race. But she still finds it hard to believe who she'll be racing with.

Sasori: "To think that a 19-year old boy would be my opponent. By the looks of it, he does not seem to look like a professional racer!"

Suddenly, Samui once again sees Nobuhiko's ghost calling him.

Samui: "Senpai?"

Takanori: "Eh? Senpai?"

Samui: "I can see Nobu-senpai..."

Takanori: "Whoa, you're freaking me out! Hey, where are you going?"

Takanori sees Samui talking to a wall...

Takanori: "He sees Nobu!? So having a third eye is true, after all..."

Samui: "Nobu-senpai?"

Nobuhiko: "I'll give you a word of advice. Come..."

Samui: "What is it?"

Takanori is bewildered seeing Samui leaning like he's being whispered.

Takanori: "Okay... now this is scary...."

The two racers are ready.

8520370728_e55e500060_c.jpg

Takuma: "3...2...1... GO!!!"

The two cars set off. The Impreza immediately takes the lead thanks to its 4WD traction and 400 horsepower.

8519257345_3abb008fb8_c.jpg

Sasori: "Think you can keep up?"

8520370424_e951d2fb25_c.jpg

Sasori: "I have mastered Suzuka ever since I started to drive! I am the Queen of Suzuka!"

8520370278_2f419e7a09_c.jpg

Sasori: "Even if you are my student, I will never allow myself to lose!"

8520368420_63778572ae_c.jpg

Samui: "Impressive! So that's what a 4WD is! They have all the traction they can use at the corner exits! And they can get away easily!"

8520368180_46bccac09a_c.jpg

Samui: "And I think that Impreza has more power than this NSX!"

8519254635_d173dc5d3e_c.jpg

Sasori: "I'd never thought that you'll stick around. And also, I never thought that you are a Kanonji...

...but you are such a nice boy. I don't even know why am I joining this. Is it because I want to race? Does racing make me feel excited?"

8520367806_c18383ac09_c.jpg

Samui: "Huh? Why am I keeping up? Is she letting off the throttle?"

"That's what you call Slipstream, Samui-kun! You gain more speed because you have no air resistance when you ride with your opponent's airflow!"

8520367570_bb78cf0fbb_c.jpg

Sasori: "I won't let you pass! Watch and learn, just like in school!"

8520367400_f6246820fc_c.jpg

Samui: "2nd lap. From here on, I just have to follow...

...Nobu-senpai's advice!!!"

Page 7 - Suzuka's Fastest

2nd lap has started, with Samui still hanging on.

8520367288_38075c2a24_c.jpg

Takanori: "Wow... To think he can finally control the NSX!"

Takuma: "And Samui has a good plan."

Takanori: "What do you mean?"

Takuma: "He's just waiting for the perfect opportunity to overtake. But first, he has to push his opponent at its limits."

Meanwhile, at the other side...

Shinji: "There's no way that a 19-year old high school student can beat the Queen of Suzuka."

Shouji: "So he's the Third Courier, eh?"

Shinji: "Sasori nee-san is someone who is persistent. She cannot allow herself to lose. We don't even argue with her."

Shouji: "To think that little boy can keep up... he is actually good. Plus, the NSX Type R is already potent to begin with."

During the race...

8519253745_7e278857fb_c.jpg

Sasori: "You are good! Usually, I outrun my opponents after just 1 lap."

Samui: "I am now aware on a 4WD's dynamics. And I'm sorry to say this, but you already made a mistake from the very beginning!"

8520366982_e426a87bbb_c.jpg

Takanori: "It's the final lap! Samui should make a move now!"

Takuma: "He's smart. He knows how to beat a 4WD."

Takanori: "Even though I own a GT-R, I can say a 4WD's weakness is as easy to exploit as the other drivetrains."

8520366844_af769f29f5_c.jpg

Samui: "All right! Her car starts to understeer!"

Sasori: "Damn! I don't expect this to happen! The steering has gotten heavier!"

Samui: "I am just remembering what Nobu-senpai told me before the race..."

"Sasori-sensei immediately goes all-out to take advantage of her Impreza's capabilities. She can outrun her opponents in a single lap.

But if you hang on, you can easily exploit a 4WD's weakness. 4WDs are only good at the start. That's why they're only good in qualifying laps or at the first part of the race. They may offer superior traction, but nothing beats the reflexes and nimbleness of a rear-wheel drive car! And your NSX is lighter, hence you can conserve your tires' grip!"

8520366690_9fb5af2a5c_c.jpg

8520366508_9192446175_c.jpg

Samui: "I'm sorry, Sensei... but you allow yourself to be open to any attack. You are now being pushed too far!"

Then her Impreza understeers big time at the hairpin, allowing Samui to overtake her.

8520366358_fed6a7bc77_c.jpg

Samui: "I can turn! I can control this car even better! Witness the power of my NSX-kun!"

8520366184_7758698a62_c.jpg

Sasori: "No! How could this be!? How could he..."

8519252661_a0f6397b70_c.jpg

Samui: "You should not drive at your best at the start! You have used too much the grip of your tires!"

8520365922_27cfe4a6e9_c.jpg

Sasori: "His NSX is pulling away!"

8519252365_48b56d4daf_c.jpg

Sasori: "Impressive high speed cornering! I can only go 175 KM/H at the 130R!"

8519250205_6172cef7e2_c.jpg

Sasori: "Shoot! Understeer again! You've pushed me too hard, Kobayashi!"

8519250077_96deedffbe_c.jpg

Takanori: "All right! Samui wins!"

Shinji: "How could this be!? I can't believe it... I thought she could outrun him!"

Shouji: "Battles vary from time to time. We should not expect the same result. Our sister has great potential, but we have to admit that Samui is a racer on a different level."

The two racers return to the pit lane.

Samui: "Otsukaresama deshta."

Takanori: "Great job, Samui!"

Takuma: "We win Round 1, then."

Sasori approaches the three, wiping her sweat.

Sasori: "Impressive skill, Samui."

Samui: "You too, Sensei..."

Sasori: "You are the only opponent I have encountered that stuck behind me after the 1st lap. Usually, I outrun my opponents before the end of 1st lap."

Samui: "Sensei, you have gone all out from the start already; that's why your car's tires suffered."

Sasori: "That's my mistake. And well, I guess you are now Suzuka's fastest..."

Samui: "No, Sensei... There is someone faster than you and me."

Sasori: "Huh? Who is it?"

Samui: "It's Hiramoto Nobuhiko-senpai!"

All of them are shocked at what Samui said. Then Samui looks at Nobuhiko's ghost, then both of them doing a thumbs up.

Nobuhiko: "Congratulations! I'm proud of you."

Otsukaresama deshta - The Japanese utter this word before they exit the workplace to signal that their work for today is finished.

Samui uttered it, however, as a taunt to Sasori.

Interesting...

EDIT: I've recently bought GT5 XL. I've got all DLC cars and tracks (except HSV and the blue GT-R). Feel free to add "Hachiroku_Mat", RC!

Page 8 - Takanori's Tactics

A week has passed, and Samui's victory is still very much a hot topic among racing blogs. I gotta commend that young man for his skills at a tender age.

The next round's venue is still unknown... It'll be up to Takanori and Shinji as to where to settle the score.

Since Samui has no classes, I tagged him along in Suzuka, to watch Takanori practice.

8524499092_ecd38ee2fe_c.jpg

Samui: "So he is into GT-Rs, huh?"

Takuma: "Ask him anything about the GT-R, and he'll answer you with utmost knowledge and confidence."

8524498776_675f4de530_c.jpg

Samui: "It's really fast! Look at how it passed by at the main straight!"

Takuma: "It has 630 horsepower. And that's just minor modifications."

Samui: "So GT-Rs can be a lot more powerful with just basic tuning?"

Takuma: "Indeed."

Samui: "I wish I am as fast as Takanori..."

Takuma: "That's what I have been wishing too. You know, Takanori is someone you want to have as a sibling."

8523387165_00768ca525_c.jpg

Takuma: "He makes you feel like you are his brother. You get this warm feeling every time you talk to him. Even though I am mean to him at times, I love him very much. He changed my life. He's my inspiration..."

Samui: "So I guess we are the same, huh? We have inspirations. Takanori for you and Nobu-senpai for me."

8523386923_75d8fbdbba_c.jpg

Takuma: "Just don't forget the people that love, care and support you. You'll be a great person with loved ones on your side. Takanori made me feel that."

8524498280_565822b420_c.jpg

At the bleachers, Shinji is actually watching the GT-R's performance.

Shinji: "A GT-R, eh? Well, that's expected from him. Heh... my Amuse S2000 GT1 Turbo is tuned to beat GT-Rs on the track! You're already doomed, Mr. Godzilla Keeper!"

Takanori returns to the pit lane after a few more laps.

Takanori: "This feels good! The engine components are stock, though. The acceleration is neck-snapping."

Samui: "Huh? How's that possible? How did you manage to increase the horsepower with stock internals?"

Takanori: "That's the wonders of a turbo engine, Samui! Your NSX is naturally-aspirated, right? To get the power increase as much as a turbo, you have to tinker with the engine! For a turbo, on the other hand, you can easily increase power without even touching the engine components! Replacing the turbocharger is one of the easy steps. Though this GT-R also has stock turbos. I managed to get 630 horsepower because of aftermarket air filter, sports intake manifold, and a new exhaust. My emphasis on tuning here is balance and accessibility to all skill levels for circuit driving."

Takuma: "There, that's the lecture for you, Samui. Though Takanori must have simplified the explanation."

Takanori: "Hey, that's the simplest way of answering his question! Why do you always have to be so mean? Good thing Kazunori-san is not here... I don't want to be humiliated in front of him."

Takuma: "And you are so slow. Both you and Shinji, actually. You haven't decided for the venue!"

Takanori: "While doing the practice run, I have already decided. It would take place in the Touge!"

Takuma: "I thought it would be an all-out Circuit run. Oh well, Touge is more exciting."

Takanori: "Though there is another reason why I chose that venue."

Samui: "Why?"

Takanori: "That's something you should find out, Samui. That's your homework! Oh shoot, I gotta go to the bathroom! And we'll leave afterwards."

While going to the bathroom, Takanori shows a grin.

Takanori: "I'll put up a wonderful surprise for you, Shinji. Something that you won't expect, hehehehehe...."

**********************************************************

Hours have passed after the three left Suzuka, a racing car runs at the circuit alone.

It returns to the pit lane. A cleaner manages to see it, and he's mesmerized with the car's presence. He gets close to it and is eager to meet the driver.

Cleaner: "Eh? I wonder where's the driver?"

However, the Supra sets off, and the cleaner is horrified.

Cleaner: "It.... moves on its own!?"
