The Indie ThreadMusic

I know you don't really want to hear this, so I'm going to say they were 🤬 awful, ear-damaging and generally not worth seeing live. 👎

But you'd spot me for the terrible liar that I am. :P

Sorry, but they were really, really good. :D
Phenomenal show, great presence and the energy they transmitted to the crowd was astonishing. Will Butler also flabbergasted everyone by climbing about 30ft up one of the stage covering supports (Greek Theater is an outdoor venue, but the stage is covered) during one of their songs (I'm not familiar enough with their back-catalogue yet to know it by name. :guilty:) with his drum in tow, and proceeded to beat both the scaffolding, the drum and the stage-light fitting in close proximity with the same furor that he'd been beating the drum onstage! Total loon!

I really, really, really hope for your sake that they find a suitable venue in Houston for you to see them in. 👍

You know, you really scared me there at the beginning! I thought you were serious.:scared:

I didn't even see you update this thread. I was about to send you a message asking if you went, but now I don't have to.

Yes, I'm sure they were amazing! They don't need any big theatrics or special tricks to put on a good show, all they do is play the hell out of their instruments! That's what makes them such a fantastic live band. I'm watching very closely for any tour dates in Texas. As this point, I'd be willing to drive to Austin or Dallas if it meant seeing Arcade Fire. Hopefully some more dates come out for Spring or Summer. Fingers crossed everyone!

I'm willing to bet a pretty penny that the song that will climbed the scafolding during was "Rebellion (Lies)". He did the same thing in the movie "Mirror Noir".

Go to around 10 minutes to see it, but feel free to watch the whole video:

In other news, I purchased the Two Door Cinema Club album "Tourist History" since I was tired of always barrowing my friend's copy. I actually was supposed to see them live at an in store performance at Cactus Records in Houston. But their instruments got held up in customs, and since they had a concert at another venue in Houston later that night, they had to skip the instore and go straight there. It was dissappointing, but oh well, I still saw them live when they opened up for Phoenix.

Some good concerts soming up in Houston. Ra Ra Riot playing at Warehouse Live at the end of October, and Stars playing at Warehouse in November. Should be good!

Bump after several months.

I've been making quite a few indie purchases in the past few months.

Since our last visit:

Arcade Fire-EP- Finally got around to buying this album. All the way from 2003. It's almost like a concept album in that the concept is Arcade Fire themselves. This EP contains many themes and elements that they would heavily use in the subsequent three studio albums (Funeral, Neon Bible, and The Suburbs).

Wolf Parade-Expo 86- Some great hard indie rock on this album. I haven't heard much of Wolf Parade before buying this album, but alot of people say that their earlier albums are even better. I may give them a buy.

Stars-The Five Ghosts- I bought this album on a whim. I saw Stars play the song Fixed on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and I really liked what I heard. After initially listening to the album the whole way through, I didn't really much care for it. But I've listened to it a few times since then, and it's really grown on me. Now I really like the album!

Belle & Sebastian-Write About Love- Another band that I saw on Jimmy Fallon, not previously having heard their music. I really like this album. It's a fantastic throwback to alot of singer songwriter and pop bands of the '60's. Some great tracks on this one.

Ra Ra Riot-The Orchard- Now this is a fantastic album! There isn't a single song on this entire LP that I do not adore. Flawless album through and through. I really dig the heavy orchestral element in the band.

Wavves-King of the Beach- I bought this album in the middle of winter, and as much as I like this album in February in Houston, I feel like it would be lightyears more enjoyable in July on a beach in SoCal. But no matter where I am, it's an excellent release. I'm really grooving on the Lo-Fi surf rock.

And on top of that, I've bought a bunch of single songs off iTunes. So my winter has been very indie-tastic so far. I'm definitely considering getting the new Bright Eyes album in the next few days, or whenever I get around to opening iTunes.

Here are some nice tunes to leave you with!

Arcade Fire is coming back to Phoenix AZ!! Yes! I thought I was going to have to go all the way to Coachella to see them this year but seeing as how Arcade Fire was the main reason I wanted to go ill just save some money and see them here.

Im glad you liked the Arcade Fire Ep too... I remember getting it a couple days after I got Funeral. Vampire/Forest Fire has always been one of my favorite songs of theirs. I want to see them play it live some day.... although I won't hold my breath. They don't really play too much from their Ep at live shows.

pretty much what Servo said. I'm plenty past the "indie" stuff and now more into the low-fi, shoegaze, fizz scene, but I always love me some more standard sounds.

But I'll still give out some recommendations. A band that I've been BIG, and I mean like wheretheheckhaveyoubeenmyentirelife-big since I discovered them is Japan's Spangle Call Lilli Line. Man these guys rock.
Sea:

the classic: E; it's a pity they only have the 4 minute version on Youtube, the original song is like 7 minutes.

Then, we have a folky, almost country-sounding band called Hem, from New York. If you don't get mesmerized by Sally's voice something is way wrong with you.

Then we have the fabulous, absolutely fabulous Dungen, from Sweden. Their entire Ta det lungt is one of the greatest albums ever crafted. It's more space shoegaze than indie, but it's incredibly awesome.

If you never caught The Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca, do yourself the fvor of your life and listen to it. It's easily my favorite album from 2009, and 2009 was a strong year.

And I'm pretty amazed nobody has mentioned the Raveonettes. or Tilly and the wall. Heck, not even Carissa's Wierd or Asobi Seksu! NO MY BLOODY VALENTINE, FOR GOD'S SAKE!

I have a lot of work to do in this thread. Rest assured, I'll come back often... and I'll also check out many recommendations in here that I don't know. For starters, those japanese and portuguese bands. I love local stuff.

EDIT:

OH YES!!! I'm speaking about loving local stuff yet don't post anything from here. Just recently and extraordinarily good band popped up here in Mexico City, called Hello Seahorse! Their album Bestia (Beast) Is incredibly well done for a mexican band. They have single-handedly brought back to life an otherwise dead scene in here:

I actually have Bestia on my iPod. Though, it doesn't get much airtime, since I don't know what they are saying. But the music itself is very good!

Dude, I don't know what half the artists I listen to are saying, yet I can listen to the full Spangle Call Lilli Line discography in one fell sweep!

However, it's nice to see that these guys get some love outside Mexico. They surely deserve it.

My favourite band at the moment are The Horrors. It's so hard to show people a song which is typically them as they totally changed there direction in music for the 2nd album. The 1st song is from 2nd album Primary Colours (2009) and the 2nd song is from Debut album Strange House (2007)

Also check out Editors:

and a few older bands like The Smiths:

Loads of bands i could post here. I love all sought's of alternative music right back to the 60's.

Edit: umm how do i fix the links?.

Hurray! Hallelujah! Yippee! :D :D :D

In the wake of their recent Grammy for album of the year, Arcade Fire have announced a World Tour. And Houston is on the list!!!!! Actually, The Woodlands, which is a suburb of Houston about 45 minutes north of the city, is on the list. The venue will be the Cynthia Wood's Mitchell Pavilion, which is a smaller location, popular with lots of bands big and small. Two of the bandmembers, brothers Win and Will Butler are from the Woodlands, and a few of Arcade Fire's songs are about the Woodlands. So the show may be seen as a sort of homecoming. The date for Houston is May 4th, 2011. I wouldn't miss it for the world!

Do any of you guys use last.fm? I think it would be easier if we could see what each person listens to from there. Mine is here.

Anyway, I'm really surprised that some of you guys listen to some bands that I listen to. I would never expect anyone to mention Spangle call Lilli line, Pedro the Lion, MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS, Number Girl, etc.

I've been getting into stuff by Motohiro Nakashima and Rachel Grimes lately. A bunch of minimalist stuff, but I'll post some of what I listen to.

(That might have been a bit too much. :P)

Some good stuff you've got there! Nice to see someone contributing to this thread. It doesn't get used enough.

I'll add some new stuff I've been listening to a bit later.

I use last.fm though I admit my taste in indie has been acquired in the last year or so, and the indie artists aren't even close to the most listened ones in my charts, plus I still listen to lots of electronic and progressive stuff. In any case, here's my profile http://www.last.fm/user/diego440

The indie bands I've been listening most this week are:

The Smiths will always be the best band ever!

Right now, I'm listening to the new The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart album called Belong. It is the follow up to their self-titled debut.

And the new album Angels by The Strokes, although not as good as there others, is still worth a listen.

Ah! I never knew that The Pains of Being Pure at Heart released a new album! I loved their debut.

As for the new Strokes album, I agree. It's not as raw as Is This It was. I enjoyed "Under Cover of Darkness" though because it sounded like much of their earlier work.

Well the official release is the 29th ;)

I am actually QUITE surprised that someone here knows who Spangle Call Lilli Line are. And you seem to have your stuff well put together, as you mentioned Asobi Seksu (all kinds of awesome, heck) and Advantage Lucy, which are very obscure. They are a fun band to listen to, toooooo sweeet for their own good sometimes, but they have some real jewels...

I'll have to chek the other stuff out. Thanks (:

The other day I gave me some time to check out some of the suggestions that have been posted in here. Damn those Saint Vincent guys (and girl) kick ass. I’ll for sure be looking for more. And I’ll be looking at the other posted bands. For now take a listen to Texas Pandaa:

Nice choices there! I've really been digging the Joy Formidable lately, especially the song "Whirring"

Beach House is an awesome band too!

Been listening to a bit of Cut Copy lately.

I've been getting more and more into the Midwestern Emo Revival scene lately.

And I'm happily anticipating the new Company of Thieves album coming out on May 17. I might get it preordered because the preordered copies get signed. It's either that, or I can just buy it and get it signed at a concert and chill with the band again.

Speaking of concerts...

I'm actually in this and their other concert videos from Logan Square. I'm the guy with the bowl-shaped haircut, haha.

Choice tunes there.👍

I purchased some more Indie albums for the California beach. I really enjoy the C86 style with the lo-fi and high re-verb. And I can never ever get enough of surf rock. I just want to go to California now and go longboarding down by the beach. It's the sounds of summer.:D

I bought Gemini by Wild Nothing:

And Astro Coast by Surfer Blood:

Surfer-Blood-Astro-Coast.jpg

Bring on the summer!!

Wild Nothing is a great band. You should check Beach Fossils and The Pains of Being Pure At Heart (as previously mentioned) out.

Btw, one of the songs on the new Beach Fossils EP features the singer from Wild Nothing.

I love Beach Fossils! Their album will be my next buy for sure!

Daydream is a favorite of mine.

And I enjoy the Pains as well.👍

Bought some indie albums yesterday on a bit of a whim.

First is I'm Wide Awake It's Morning by Bright Eyes

bright-eyes-128-l.jpg

And Treats by Sleigh Bells

Sleigh_Bells-Treats-2010-MTD.jpg

Both albums are great!

And I've been getting a bit into the 90's Indie Rock. You know, the early stuff; where it all started.

I absolutely love this album, ITAOTS is epic. My favourites from it are ITAOTS, Two Headed Boy (Pt. 1 and 2.), Holland (1945), and Ghost. NMH's Avery Island isn't too shabby either. 👍

I must have played this album so many times over by now.
