The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Do you seriously think Lapierre ran 20 metres further away and somehow got some magical tools to get that car going again?
Oddly, the cars have a toolkit on them - with the drivers having a significant lesson in how to repair various common faults and crash-related vehicle injuries.

The contents were described to me as including a number of rudimentary tools "and some money, in case we need to bribe the marshalls"...

I suggest that, instead of a certain distance, use a time limit instead. It's just silly to retire a car if you're suddenly 11m away from it instead of 10m. I see no reason to retire a car for this very reason. If it takes you 15 minutes to get the car going again, your race is pretty much over since the car will spend additional time in the pits to get repaired. Then you're looking at 8-12 laps of a disadvantage very fast. Although honestly this rule in its entirety seems rather silly to me. "Wait here, I'll walk to the pits, grab me some pizza and a spare windscreen wiper and I'll be back in 4 hours."

There's excluding a car for an incredibly silly reason, and then there is allowing a team to at least complete the race, no matter how far behind they are. 24 hours is 24 hours.

No one is entitled to finish a 24 hour race just because they start one.

How to finish an Endurance race.

1. Don't go off the track.
2. Don't hit anything.
3. Don't break anything.

The team is allowed to send mechanics out to the car, they can take any parts they can carry, they can give the driver any parts replaceable during a race, they can instruct the driver in what to do to fix it. They can't touch the car, nor can anyone else except the Marshall's and they can only touch it in order to move it to a place of safety. That includes placing a working car back on the track. Anything else is automatic retirement.

All the driver has to do is stay within 10 metres. It's not a difficult thing to do.

He was sitting next to the wall on the outside of one of the highest speed corners on the race track. I wouldn't want to stay there either. And the marshals probably didn't want him there either. What is so difficult to see about that?
It's not a question of rules, it's a question of safety.

Don't laugh but that is what yellow flags are for - as in drivers must slow down and be prepared to stop.

He was also behind four layers of tyre barrier.

He didn't walk away because he thought it was a bad place to be. He walked away because he though the car was done for the day.

Apparently back when Mercedes raced, their kit included a clean pair of underwear for when the car would flip into the nearest wooded area.

Gee thanks for stating the obvious, you talk like youre SUCH a pro driver.:indiff:
Everyone makes mistakes, you try to race a LMP1 at the speed in the wet if youre so good.

Also quit being so "righteous" and uptight, just because he moved abit far. He went behind the tire barrier because its the obvious thing to do, even with the yellow flags in those conditions. Its common sense.

Theres nothing dangerous or silly about what he did, it was the sensible thing and you want him penalised so severely for such a MINOR technicality?...

I really...

Only for the race itself though, they had to establish whether the clean pair of pants was necessary in qualifying and warm up first. Poor Mark Webber had to be the guinea pig for that.... :sly:

Found this fantastic video:

13,000 rpm V10 engine. They really don't make them like this anymore :indiff:

Must say, the tso10 is the best on the eyes and ears imo

I never figured a V10 engine screaming at 10000+ RPMs down the Mulsanne sounds efficient.

Glorious though.

And Toyota should've given another crack at the top spot with the GT-One, it definitely had the speed, but were just let down by Murphy's law.

Go to Limerock? :P I am

If you pay for the plane, I'm there. I already saw one ALMS event in person this year, I wouldn't mind another!

Kevin Buckler supposedly talked to John Gaw this weekend, did any news come out of that?

There are to be TRG GTC class Porsche's at Lime Rock, not Astons according to the entry list.

Weather sucks here for the next couple of days with a stalled front.
It's to be 85 - 90 and humid for the racing with some scattered afternoon T'storms on Thursday and isolated T'storms on Friday and Saturday.
Typical weather for here and just like the Glen last weekend.

Yes it would be great.

Looks somewhat familiar.

Whats camping like at Limerock? I just can't see them having a lot of space to fit in that many people, especially the big RVs and campers, I've been to Limerock twice for Skip Barber but this will be my first time spectating, its safe to say I've fallen in love with the place.

Camping is in the infield only.
It starts at No Name Straight (after the esses) and continues past the Uphill where the RV section is (along the back stretch to West Bend/ bridge area), so about half way around the track.
The camping is first come first serve (2014 reserved) and fills quickly.
You can arrive Wednesday at 9 AM if you prefer.
It is about half on a hilly section and the other half pretty flat.
There are a set of his/her showers in small trailers for campers.
Police are on patrol and for the most part it's a party atmosphere.
A couple families usually with kids riding around the pavement area in the middle of the flat area off the bathrooms.
The middle of that flat area fills with water so no sleeping on the ground if it rains.

I have never camped there and these are my observations.
I live close by and go home at night and this year we have purchased an RV area, though we have no RV. :odd:

I found this interesting.
I always wondered what kind of purse was paid and how.

Mac, 👍

Well, it's quite iconic. It'd be like the tunnel collapsing at Monaco, it's more or less part of the track.

I'm not sure if they should plant a new one, or just leave it as is. That tree was indeed quite iconic.

That purse isn't very big at all. So then the manufacture guys obviously make their ends meat through contracts that pay out well? I rather try and race Nascar and finish in the top 40 if I were to do racing in real life for money.
