The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I don't see anything odd at all under that wrap. It looks like a mid engined, open top p1 car.
I suspect that that wrap i bogus.
I also suspect that we will see a front wheel driven LMP1 car for the first time. One that is wider in the front than the rear, with rear wheels driven by electricity above 120kph. Sort of an R18 turned backwards. Oh, front engined too.
The problem is is that we can't have open-top LMP1's anymore so it may have a unique cockpit setup, Chaparral VGT maybe? :P

Unless someone solves the problem of horrendous understeer in FWDs with >200hp, I don't think we'll ever see a FWD LMP1.

I'd be surprised to even see a front-engined one ever again. I know Panoz wasn't exactly a big name manufacturer, but considering they're the only one's who have ever tried it, there must be a reason for that.

There were two reason why Panoz went with the front-engine design. One was Don Panoz wanting the LMP car to have the same layout as their road cars for marketing and selling purposes.

But the real reason was they were late on deciding to build a new car. So they used the GTR-1 the team had knowledge of as a base for the Roadster.

As with everybody here, I'm curious what kind of better mousetrap Nissan has come up with.

If I recall, there was one benefit in the form of the driver sitting directly on the Rear Axle and therefore having a better feel of it.

Just did a google search to see what sites were posting about it, saw that one has spy shots of the transporter showing up here in AZ. Sneaky little fellas.

A front engined arrangement has obvious weight distribution disadvantages and in all honesty wouldn't be a good idea.

Thinking about it, although I'm sure you won't do it, is there even a single chance you or others to take a picture? Wondering how secretive this is.

Nissan publishing pictures would be wrong at this stage. If you are testing a project, why release images showcasing it for rivals to pour over? Heck we have no idea when Nissan are even showcasing the car - could be a week before the 2015 opener for all we know.

Nissan did use the mid-engine back in 80's-90's. Nothing saying they can't do their front/mid-engine layout this time. Yes, mid engine is the best layout for LMP racing full stop I won't argue that fact.

My opinions on the Nissan LMP.

The car won't be too radical by any means. The GT-R name give me the impression of them using a petrol-powered turbo V6. Engine power be north of 550 HP and with the electric motors pushes it up toward the 1000 HP range as seen on the Toyotas.

I also could see Nissan use a version of the ATTESA system for the LMP to help with handing and putting the power down from the electric motors.

My idea of the Nissan LMP1:
Based off of the GTR as in it has many cosmetic and technical similarities such as a FWD layout and possibly using a near-production engine.
It is also more likely that if this is based off of the GTR, it will be the R36 and not the R35, possibly having a double reveal of both cars at the same time 💡

I bet it'll use the R35's AWD system and a highly tuned R35 GT3 engine or even a hyrbid system based on their road going cars.

Super GT500 is the GT-R's top tier category. All SUPERGT500 and DTM will be using turbo4s. Is this a possibilty at LeMans? F1 are using small displacement turbo V6's. Touring cars have 1600cc turbo engines. Le mans is supposed to show the world new technologies in the biggest race of the year. Remember, a small displacement Rotary lasted the distance to win. I havent heard of any 4cylinder diesel powered Nissans racing, other than a Hardbody when I was back in the States. What else could Nissan use for this biggest race to make a statement?

Goings out on a limb here:

Brand new LMP1 tub with a front mounted super tuned GT-R engine pushing 700hp and 300hp worth of e-power. Has 4WD, stylized like a GT-R (certain major things, front end or roof), and maybe even look a little like the VGT car they made. It will be more like a GT than a LMP.

Yeah except there's no way it will have 700bhp from the ICE, the most they'll get under the current regs is about 550bhp.
