The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Team NISMO will get my support in 2016, I'm pulling for Porsche in 15 and to be honest, Lambo could be quite successful if they become joest-lambo...

If this was 90s Lamborghini I'd laugh at the idea that they'd want to toss their hat in the ring for LMP1, and I still find it odd that they want to compete at all considering they have a spec car series that is quite well known among race fans and car enthusiasts and a decent GT program. I mean they are known for being track cars (or one off Halo cars) and not cars bread from racing DNA so what is the point of joining the top rung of Le Mans? Toyota, Porsche, Nissan, Audi and even the rumors of Ford and Ferrari make sense but Lamborghini...not really.

Which is what makes it so out of leftfield.

No I agree with that but it doesn't make it something to be excited about. To me that is, if it was someone else like I don't know...let's say Mazda. Then yeah I'd totally be on board, hell if Jaguar or BMW said they were going I'd jump on that wagon, but not Lamborghini.

I was agreeing with you. I was saying of all the car makes, Lamborghini was the last one anyone expected to so much as mention a Le Mans Program.

Reading the Top Gear article, Lamborghini is getting pretty serious on their motorsport programs. Plus the recent Asterion concept being a hybrid, a LMP-1 doesn't seem far-fetched.

Only time will if Lambo takes the plunge but it puts them in a already packed LMP rumor mill.

Far fetched isn't the issue though, it's not something I can see being exciting if they were an actual group with success at least even once or came close to winning like Nissan and Toyota, sure welcome back...but their history there has been more bleak than a Lister.

If Lamborghini has LMP-1 project, it would make even more sense for Audi(or Porsche) to end their LMP program. And if not, it'd be very stupid for VAG to run 3 different teams in one series.

I think VAG has shown that it's perfectly alright to pit their brands against eachother in GT3. I mean, Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi, Bentley, and that works just fine from a commersial standpoint.

But Lambo in P1? I doubt it. Unless we will see a major rule change for P1 or a new class (wich I have been thinking if it is in the pipeline. A cancellation of GTE AM, and a revival of a roadcar based GTP or GT1 seems totally feasable. So many mfg's are rumored to be interested in LM currently, and many of them have cars - or will have cars - that would be perfect for this).

Except that GT3 is a privateer category so VAG can't stop anyone running any car against any other car.

LMP1 is a manufacturer controlled category so it won't happen unless the VAG board says so.

Can't see it happening myself, unless Audi really are looking for an exit route.

I would have thought that the Asterion hybrid hypercar was a signal of Lambo's interest in F1 rather than WEC.

LMP1 is heavily hybrid too. And the rules/regulations have more scope for innovation. The Porsche, Audi and Toyota all run very different drive trains. F1's are all the same in that respect.

WEC = VWEC?

Well, VAG must be fullt aware that any GT3 car they make will be pitted against whatever opposition there is.
F ex, it is likely that GM will not allow their Cadillacs to go up against the Callaway 'Vettes.

But otherwise, I see it your way. Unless Audi really wants out, Lambo wont be permitted in by the VAG board.

Another Volkswagen team with a Le Mans program? Geez like Porsche and Audi weren't enough.
There wouldn't be a third. The only way Lamborghini "enters" LMP1 is if the Audi program is rebranded during a switch to petrol engines. It wouldn't make sense any other way.

Are we really going to give Lambo credit for Reiter's barely supported (though recognized in later years) efforts? It wasn't even a Michelotto-Ferrari situation, Reiter were building their cars on their own initiative and with their own resources.

The 2015 Huracan GT3 will be the first in-house GT effort from Lamborghini.

I think my wording has confused you, I'm not saying that Lambo directly should be thanked for PWC or GT efforts or even those that we saw back in ALMS. I'm saying that the car and teams using them and building them showed that they could be decent GT cars, not anything works related. That's all. And in the end that should be enough for what Lambo are trying to do in the world of Marketing their product, not going to P1 category just because they want to be hipsters with their concept hybrid.

I think, they shouldn't join either one, a one off hyper car that is hybrid to combat the P1s, LaFerraris, and 918s of the world doesn't merit F1 or P1. I say this because their Motorsports effort has never been serious, they been the one sports car company that has told the world in a blaring matter, they don't need the arena (Motorsports at large) to sell cars and now they wish to? GT I understand but pinnacle engineering type stuff I don't.

Why the hate for Audi, people seem to hate their domination of Le Mans yet instead of other companies stepping up and taking the challenge to them people are wanting them to just leave
