The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

They're trying to make it universal so that they can "faze out DP" and use LMP2, however, I think IMSA wanted the cars to have Car Manufacturer ties and to make them near-spec, So basically they wanted to make DP a worldwide category by changing LMP2 into something similar. This is what I'm seeing at least.

Except IMSA is now going to be the one that allows diversity in the class while the rest of the world makes carbon DP's.

IMSA will allow different bodykits and engines while the ACO series will all use the same engine. Plus IMSA will likely continue with the DP.

Really, though, wouldn't it just be cheaper to continue with the current cars for four more years? Barring any glaring safety issues which I don't know of aside from the open cockpit.

The biggest technical hurdle is the new rules proposal narrows the car by 100mm,and the only car that fits that (I think) is the Oreca05. The other big issue is I believe that unless the constructor is on the list for the 4 official suppliers their car (HPD,Straka,BR etc) the only option they will to race in 2017 is IMSA. It's a safe bet that Oreca and Onroak will make the cut so maybe the Ligier J2 can be modified with a sawzall.

The cost issue is tricky with these one-off cars being built and no customers buying them, how much do they really cost? With only 4 constructors worldwide can they really build 25-30 cars to fill the ELMS and AsLMS grids in '17? I doubt that and I think the ELMS will be weak in '17.

The engine thing sounds bad a first but in reality if you take away ESM and Krohn the entire WEC and ELMS P2 grid is all Nissans. Krohn should be okay if the J2 can run the new rules with a engine switch but ESM could have a tough '17 if the HPD/Wirth doesnt make the cut. They could be forced out of the WEC altogether and have no option but to run in IMSA in '17.

He was a major engineer in F1 at one point I'm surprised Toyota didn't give him a job again if he was on the market. I see your new to this side of the racing aspect.
yea mate iv quite new to the Motorsport picture but i have but going to meetings before i can remember.

any one else getting anoyed with the Audi F1 rumers? surly if they where moving they would be constaintly talking about it trying to get as mutch hype as possible.

No they wouldn't, and if they were moving to F1 it would most likely be in a engine supplier relation first than anything. There were plenty of rumors about Honda before they finally said they were coming back to f1 to supply engines to McLaren. Also they have enough investors and interested folk from the Le Mans domination that they don't need hype to get attention for F1, however as I said they probably aren't or wouldn't join as a full outfit but a supplier. RBR would probably be the most likely group to alliance themselves if it did happen.

Its pain full not knowing what's going on! If they leave it would be an end of an era!

More important news, what are they doing to LMP2? It is good cuz any one can make a engine, chassis or tyre and any one can win with what ever combination with makes it so good! So why would the FIA, ACO and IMSA risk that?

LMP2 is the GT3 of prototype racing...if they follow through with that plan LMP2 will be destroyed. Chuff IMSA, if LMP2 won't stand in the P class in TUSCC then tough. TUSCC has a brilliant GT grid and if we in the states lost LMP2 at the cost of LMP2 going on to glory around the rest of the world then fine. Our Prototype teams are hopeless anyway. LMP2 needs to be open and broad, that's why it was created.

You realize that IMSA would be the only series that still allowed an open LMP2 class should that happen, right? Not sure where you got this idea that it won't continue.

Yeah but I'm saying that the whole class around the world should stay open as it is. The only idea of holding a class back is ridiculous.

Not with Alex Buncombe at the wheel they won't...

Honestly though, I think Chilton is a good signing. He got a harsh time of it in F1 - Bianchi was more talented than he was given credit for (I honestly think WDC material given the right car), and that made Chilton look worse than he actually was. I see a parallel to when Martin Brundle was dropped by Benetton because a young upstart named Michael Schumacher made him look rather average (and Brundle did okay for himself at Le Mans.)

Although his outright speed couldn't often match Bianchi, he very rarely made any errors, and that's a pretty useful skill to have in endurance racing. I'd definitely prefer Chilton to Adrian Sutil, who was one of the other names banded around for one of the final Nismo seats...

Buncombe should of been a Full timer IMO, he is world class.

Bit disappointed Chilton got the seat, I don't think he has any Endurance experience what so ever as well, I thought Nissan would of surely signed Vergne(One of the most adaptable drivers on the planet imo).

Also Chiyo would of been a top pick as well.

He did endurance racing back in 2007

So did Bianchi but he was still brilliant, they didn't have a Red Bull RB9 so that's where the remained.

Oh yeah, and what does Webber being there say too? Oh man how they'll hate it

What I mean is people might think that its a dumping ground for rubish F1 drivers! ...if that didn't think that already.
But the sport is growing and more people are drawn to it so a recent f1 drivers are fresh in ther mind so seeing Max they will think that its full of nesh drivers!

Still no. Chilton is in no way a "rubbish driver", and he's proved that.

And what the hell is a mesh driver...?

Where did I say in that post that he was a rubbish driver ?

Look I'm having second thoughts about the man. We will just have to wait till April the 13 to find out the truth!

I never knew Webber was a rubbish driver.
