The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

It's testing. We don't know what they were doing at that moment. They could have been running an installation lap to check systems.

I believe that's not quite finished. that's the gist of what I got from the TopGear magazine article on the car.

Also found out if the flywheel wasn't in a vacuum, it'd create a sonic boom when recovering energy because of the speed it rotates. All I can say is holy macaroni.
Just goes to show the durability of the flywheel.

Max Chilton was running pre-season testing with Carlin for Indy Lights at Barber Motorsports Park, so it wasn't him behind the wheel of the GT-R.

Why is there this idiotic impression that testing has to ONLY be done at full speed?

Chilton holds neither quality (Speed and consistency) in my opinion. What he does bring, is a big family fortune.

The man who finished 25 consecutive races from his F1 debut - which is a record - isn't consistent?

Then there's the fact that you're largely basing your judgement on his two seasons driving in the worst car in F1. As Kazuki Nakajima, Gianamaria Brunni and especially Marc Gene have proven, it's quite easy to have had a fruitless F1 career in sub-standard cars which then develops into a highly successful WEC one because they have the equipment to prove themselves.

You also need to bear in mind that he's only 23. That may seem old at a time when 17-year-olds break into Formula 1, but he still has plenty of time to develop his ability.

For those reasons I'm quite sure he has the potential to do well, and Nissan seem to have the same opinion.

I think its pretty major when youre supposed to test all week but you have to pack up on the 2nd day. The rumors are they turned less than 30 laps. Thats even worse than McLaren's situation. 30 laps on Sebring is less than 200km of running. Not good.

In COTA they were running LMP2 times, now this. Looks like the GT-R, as the last year's ZEOD, is more a marketing stunt than a real Le Mans contender.

Except its supposed to compete in a championship and not just that race. we don't even know what kind of lap times it was turning in comparison and how many times does have to be said that this is the first season, its not guaranteed to be quick right off the bat.

And how do we even know that they are going for it? They could be just trying to get basic data and see how the car responds to different changes. No sense in going for it and destroying the car right out of the box.

Theyve been testing for months now. If they have trouble still, then they're going to be cutting it close. The season starts in about 6 weeks. Theyre only sending one car to the Prologue, which is the same car they had to abandon testing with at Sebring. I hope theyre succesful, but to be honest, their program isn't looking so bright. Anyway, racer.com put this up
