The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I like how P1 is the boring class, and yet, it wasnt at the end.

DEMPSEY WITH A SECOND PLACE FINISH*
Granted, the 95 sat in the pits to "Look over the car", but still. I'm pretty stoked for him.

BMW. Wow. Way to turn around a dismal weekend. But they got pretty lucky on the pits, I have to say.

Looks like we missed crazy stuff in the GT class. The 4 Corvette bumped off the 56 BMW and a Ferrari bumped off the 3 Vette.

It was a great finish for sure. You have to give some respect to the Muscle Milk guys though. Coming back from 4 laps down is pretty amazing.

Hmmm, I can see GTC consisting only of GT300 cars then. I don´t think a Ferrari 458 or Audi R8 GT3 owner wants to see their cars beaten by a Toyota Prius or Honda CR-Z...

Except (correct me if I'm wrong) those cars already race in GT300, it allows GT3 cars. So you have Nissan GT-R GT3s, Porsches, A Prius and a CR-Z, and a Daytona Prototype just for good measure.

I know. But if I had a team running say an Audi R8 LMS Ultra, and was considering to do some GTC races in AsLMS, i would be put off by the possibility of being beaten by something that has zero to do with the road going car it portrays. The GT300 cars have about as much incommon with roadcars as DTM cars. Not very much at all. GT3 cars are built around an original chassis and engine.
The GT3 teams running in GT300 have sought that path themselves.

September issue of Popular Mechanics has an informative article on the Delta Wing. Apparently it will race at Petit Le Mans this year and then full time in the ALMS next year.

Take it as an experimental category?

Did you see the ALMS finish at Road America on ESPN2? It was Mazda vs. Muscle Milk in an epic finish. Without spoiling... (the winner) won by 0.083. If you think the ALMS' top class never produce close finishes, think again. Heck of a finish!

Yes John, I literally yelled when the winner crossed the line and scared the crap out of my puppy, it was as if he pulled several seconds per lap out of his butt. Epic.

I was so confused that Lucas destroyed a four lap deficit in the matter of like an hour, and it was still that close at the end...

I also read this last week. Interestingly they had removed all of the Nissan branding from the cover..Will Nissan be a future project partner?

I doubt it, all they wanted was the media attention at LeMans wich they got so not very likely they will be sponsoring this silly thing... Honestly I hate to see a great team such as Highcroft having to resort to this "hey look at me" stunts just to survive and keep racing(hot lapping in this case), just a shame they desserve to be mixing it up at the front on LMP1!

Who knows Blaze. I agree with Jav. It would be cool if they could get a bigger engine in the car, so that they can race against LMP1 cars. Where that engine would come from is another question.

As far as ALMS racing is concerned, I have to put that Mazda vs. Muscle Milk finish at Road America 2012 only 2nd all-time in finishes compared to that Risi Competizione vs. Flying Lizard GT2 finish in 2007(?) at Sebring. You do have to credit Mazda and Muscle Milk for keeping up the intensity on a wicked four-mile race track like Road America. It was still a great finish.

Up next for the ALMS is the street course race around Baltimore. After seeing last year's race, I had new respect for how lovely Baltimore is.

The next round of the WEC is this weekend at Silverstone. Should be an intense race. I can't find an entry list, so I'm a little concerned if Toyota is going to be there or not.

Toyota will be there with one car for Wurz, Nakajima, and Lapierre. Audi with one quattro and one e-tron. 35 cars entered. We lost two Ferrari's one of a very talented duo in Melo-Makowiecki.

Why did they leave? They were quite good...

Isn't Makowiecki racing a GT car elsewhere?
