The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I think the last lap skirmish was simply a racing accident, just look like very close racing and some contact just happened as the Ferrari spun.

Edit: Kauffman was not one of the drivers in the 61 so I'm okay with this win :D

I was in one of the grandstands at that corner when it happened. Looked like Bertolini outbraked himself as he tried to stop the Aston going round the outside, then got tagged when he lost it.

Although my first reaction was for god sake Mücke not again! ;)

American Le Mans is in Baltimore this weekend, apparently the track has a had few changes from last year.

They posted the video on alms.com of Pat Long/Jaime Melo qualifying incident. Kind of funny. Melo off line cuts in front of Long on a flying lap, Long "shows his displeasure" by ramming him in a first-gear corner. I think the contact punctured his tire and bent the rear bodywork as well. I liked watching Melo race because he was so fast and on the edge, but he deserved what he got...Hope this year is just as dramatic :D

Mac if you aren't in the U.S. can't you see it streaming on alms.com or motors tv?

Also, really impressed how close Dyson was getting that turbo Lola to the much newer and faster Honda HPD in terms of qualifying times. Guy Smith is amazing...well, except that final maneuver...

Oh ya :P

You guys will never believe this (I myself am still trying to): The Amercan Le Mans Series and The Rolex Sports Car Series will announce an agreement that will see both merge in 2014.

Oh God! this is huge!!! This is awesome news! Wow wow wow!!! Let's hope it doesn't mean we will see the ALMS adopt the Grand Am rules, and hope they'll stay away from the Oval infield racing BS! This cars need to run on real road courses!

On one hand, OMG YES YES YES! This is almost as good as the IRL/ChampCar merger.

On the other hand, yay, more classes...

I thought for sure you were pulling my chain.. I'm not sure if this is good news or not..

Partly I feel that way, it worries me that they might be overpowered by Grand Am and adopt their rules making the current cars dissapear...

Time to update my dream class setup.

P1 - 2014 rules minus Big Honkin' Holes and Big Honkin' Fins.
P2 - Same
P3 - Current Daytona Prototype Rules
GT1 - Current GT3
GT2 - Current GTE-Pro
GT3 - Current Grand Am GT

Hope they go for something like that! Guess the GT-X cars will simply be upgraded to GT-E specs or the oposite, they will need to make it easy for the teams to convert their cars to GT-E for Le Mans and Sebring(hoping that Sebring won't dissapear).

Sebring is too big an event to disappear, that place never has had trobling attendance as far as I can remember (though it helps that its also on the spring break weekend ).

Does either series have something along the lines of a "suggestion box"? I have a killer idea..

Erm, I will freely admit before I get into this post that I don't manage to catch much ALMS or Grand-Am that often but...

Isn't a field consisting of 6 different classes going to be not only confusing but also spreading the competitors a little thin?

The way GT classes have gone lately is frankly stupid. I'm actually glad the ACO has seen sense and instead made it GTE Pro and GTE Am because beyond that there is no need to have wildly different GT classes from what I can see.

The current situation of "GT3", "GTE Pro" and "Grand Am GT" is pretty silly. In the UK we've got a British GT series consisting of "GT3" and "GT4" and I thought that was silly already.

While having a format switch back to GT1-3 naming, I would personally prefer if they just scrapped having more than 1 GT class. I mean, touring cars and rally cars managed to agree to the S2000 standard regulations. Why can't GT classes agree to a standard regulation? While it might be expensive at first, if you get enough series involved and manufacturers, you eventually end up with cheaper cars as they evolve. There are now loads of S2000 Touring and Rally cars about which people can buy and enter national and still some international events.

But GT is still stuck in this mess of a million regulations. With the only consistent one being used globally being GT3 it seems.

P1, P2 and P3 I agree with.

It's best to stick with GTE-Pro and GTE-AM for GT's though.

GT3 is too much of a BOP mess to take seriously in any category.

Wow, that's big news, but merging these two sires could be tricky, and I guarantee that one crowd's not gonna be happy with how they merge the classes.

Obviously, I doubt both sides will scrap their current model/car for an "In the middle" sort of deal that satisfies both. With such a low current P1/P2 count, I can see most of the top teams switching to DP. However, I also expect the current DP car to undergo changes for the merger to make it easier on other teams trying to switch.

Current Rolex GT cars are perfect for GTC.

EDIT: Also, I forgot about the schedule. Does this mean the 12 Hours of Sebring, 6 Hours of Watkins Glen, 24 Hours of Daytona, 24 Hours of Lemans, and Petit Lemans, will now all be part of the same schedule?

I hope that's the case! Hoping they drop the Oval infield racing thing! Of course with the exception of Daytona.

You clearly haven't watched Grand-Am in a while because they haven't been racing on any in-field oval other then Daytona for eight years now.
