The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

The Asian Le Mans series will go to a new circuit being built in South Korea:

And unlike the Korean International Circuit, this one is going in a place that makes sense.

Very interesting last line there.

It was confirmed in August that Super GT 300 entries will be eligible for the first year of the series.

I wont try to read too much into it, but that certainly sounds like the ACO is happy to approve "localized" vehicles for participation in series, similar to the Challenge classes. I wonder how far they could expand on that concept.

Here is the article in question explaining the move:
Super GTs will be eligible for the inaugural Asian Le Mans Series in 2013

The Asian Le Mans Series will be opened up to GT 300 entries from the Asian Super GT Series for its inaugural season in 2013.

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest and the GTA - the respective promoters of the two championships - confirmed that GT 300s would be eligible for the GTC category of the Asian Le Mans Series' first season.

Both parties will work on technical solutions in order to balance performance with other GTC entries, and will collaborate on individual calendars in order to avoid clashes and ensure Super GT teams can compete in both series.

Masaaki Bandoh, chairman of the GTA, said he hoped the deal would further the overall development of motorsport in Asia.

"Through this collaboration, I feel sure that our Asian strategy, the organisation of GT 300 races in Asia and the training of local teams and drivers will be a strong factor in the development of the motor racing industry in these countries," he said.

"The collaboration between the ACO [and], the GTA is taking its first steps. I believe and hope that together we can contribute to the development of motor sport in Asia."

Pierre Fillon, president of the ACO, added: "To be able to count on the support of the GTA in our development in Asia is great news for the ACO, and also for our new Asian Le Mans Series in 2013 as well as its promotional category, GTC.

"I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to President Bandoh and his team who came to the Le Mans 24 Hours in June to make this proposal to us. I'm sure that the ACO/GTA balance of performance will be a big success for the two championships in 2013."

For the first year of the Asian Le Mans Series, GTC - a promotional category - will therefore be open to GT 300s, FIA GT3s and single-make Cup cars.

The championship will hold six races in its inaugural season, with races in China and Japan expected to join a December visit to Sentual, Indonesia. A full calendar is expected to be announced in September.
The idea is that SuperGT's GT300 class is close enough to the GTC category that they could reasonably compete together with minimal modifications to meet the rules.

Why dont they just cut all the BS, and go back to calling it GT3?

The ACO has already called it that, sort of. They have already said that the GT3 formula will be a regional formula and that it's up to the series governing body to adapt and balance the cars out for GT-C competition.

43 cars is huge! The big guns will be Muscle Milk's HPD and Rebellion's Lola. Can't pick a winner there.

EDIT - How can it be that Scott Tucker is in both Level 5 cars? He'll have to drive only in one of the teams, isn't it?

Oh, and it'll be interesting to check who is the fastest of the "Franchitti Brothers" :D

Just noticed that the Vipers will be there. I hope I get the days off from work so I can go. I'd like to see the Delta Wing in person. I think it would be much cooler in person.

Still a nice field, but I think there were 53 last year. Tucker can drive in both cars, but can only score driver points in one, and he must choose which one before the race.

Really looking forward to it myself. Got my tickets in the mail this past weekend.

He and others drive in multiple cars in one event quite a bit.

To pump us up for Petit, here is a link to ALMS Lime Rock photo's my buddy (GTP's Jake) took this year.

I don't think I'll be going to Petit this year, but I'll definitely be watching on ESPN3!! The entry list does look pretty good!!

As the article suggests, with Sebring being the last running sadly for the LMP-spec cars probably it might get a bumper field.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but you're saying Sebring will be the last running for LMPC cars?

Correction: Only LMP1

Gass also said that Audi's participation would be “a kind of a farewell” to an event that will be out of bounds when LMP1 machinery likely disappears from U.S. sports-car racing after the new, combined ALMS and Grand-Am series debuts in 2014.

Why no Audi and Toyota at Petit? Don't they usually do it? :grumpy:

Kinda hard to "Usually do it" when you have just made an official return to Sports car racing

Also, isn't there a WEC event scheduled around the same time as Petit? Pretty sure thats why they aren't doing it.

There's no event in Zhuhai. However, the event in Bahrain took place a week before Atlanta and Fuji takes place a week after. No time to take cars to the US (or risk crashing one in Toyota's case).
