Oh man YES. SO serious.
This is one of the most erratic albums I've heard in my entire life, it almost sounds like a soundtrack for a cheesy 80s flick: TOTALLY UNRELATED music styles in one record that has an undeniable vibe of one of the worse decades in music.
Suddenly I'm listening to Queen, Prince, Cindy Lauper, Guns & Roses and god knows who with the pseudo-funk track. I hate all of those (yes, I hate Queen) except for funk, I LOVE funk, but funk is NOT why I listen to Muse.
The only elements that identify this as a Muse record are the random neo-classical philarmonic-ish sounds here and there that sometimes sound SO overproduced you end up asking why, some guitar riffs that, knowing what Bellamy is capable of, are pitiful, and Bellamy's voice which remains as the best element of Muse. The songs are totally irrelevant, or if you do remember something about them, it's always for wrong reasons (the funk track comes to mind).
Even my wife, who is a self proclaimed "muser" and a fangirl who actually thinks Resistance is a good album, sez they just tried to "experiment" with whatever music style crossed their mind, and they didn't succed. At all.
It is without a doubt the worse, woooooooooooorse record Muse has released, even more so than Resistance, which was pretty freaking bad to begin with. It is infuriating actually, knowing what the band is capable of, that such a messsed up record came from them.
Notice I never referred to it as an album. Goodbye Muse, hello cheesy 1980s soundtrack.
