The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

Bentley called, they want their boot bangle back!

It certainly isn't the NC with a spoiler like that and noticeable curve from the rear wing down to the door handle. The latter could just be a trick of the light or of the sheet, but the rear end certainly isn't. I don't see any reason why it isn't the new car.

Back to the oval grill. Hmmm. Round/oval Headlights a la Porsche 911? LED DRLs or LED Parker lamps? Bring back the speakers in the headrests. ;P

Time to back up the multiple engine rumors ahead of the reveal

So, a 1.5L base engine to keep the lightweight performance enthusiasts happy, and a tweaked 2.0L to put the MX-5 up against the BRZFRS. So, anywhere from ~115 BHP on up to near-enough 200 BHP? For that matter, why would they go with a tweaked 2.0L and not that big 2.5L? Mazda doesn't exactly have cash floating around to use on everything, I'd think they'd just want to use off-the-shelf parts whenever possible.

But, man, I hope that 1.5L is an option in the US. That'd be the way to go to get a cheap, fun car.

Shame they still won't offer a MPS version with the 2.3 turbo.

As someone who is very much budget-constrained, the 1.5 sounds mighty appealing to me. Particularly as I think this thing is still expected to weigh similar to the original. ~115hp was enough power to have fun with in that, so it should be in this too. If they give us a proper coupe version, even better.

@Clark They wouldn't use the 2.3 even if they wanted to since it's an older engine and they've already moved onto the Skyactive units now. @YSSMAN is right in that the 2.5 would be the obvious answer, but realistically the 2.0 Skyactiv with a bit of tweakery would be excellent. It's great in the Mazda6 so should be even better in something lighter.

What will the news Mazda 3 MPS use (if they are even going to make one)?

There have been quite a few things coming out of AUS that go against what miata engineers have been saying.
The car is losing weight already therefore the power gain will be minimal IF ANY AT ALL and maybe even a power decrease. If there is an increase, it will be along the lines of NA -> NB and not NB -> NC.
The car is staying with the miata mantra or low weight and fun to drive so huge power will NEVER be an objective.
The NC is already just as fast as the BRZFRS with ~30hp less. Take away ~150lbs, add a motor with a broader torque curve and you're already way ahead of the twins.

My wild, unfounded speculation:

It will be a turbocharged miller cycle engine with homogeneous charge compression ignition (as well as regular spark ignition) and a Skyactiv II badge on it. Is there a better car in which to debut the new skyactiv tech? I don't think so. If this does happen, and I hope that it does, expect game changing efficiency.

Mazda has been hard at work on HCCI tech, and I think that a miller cycle engine would be the most logical way for them to pursue it, based on their past experience with it. I honestly believe Mazda has the most talented and driven engineers in the entire industry, if not perhaps the biggest budgets. But the best part....the best part is that the executives listen to them.

I wouldn't say they have a huge budget, probably quite to opposite. However, I do believe they are driven to create fun to drive cars more so than any other Japanese manufacture. Something I have learned is not the case with Nissan having worked for them for 6 months. They're too caught up with their CVT's and their cheap ugly Versa sedans...

If the new car really is about same weight as the old car ( I hope ) I really think it would still be a hard sell with only 115bhp unless it was very well priced. I don't see mazda doing that.

I just hope they go with a turbo and a NA model. Same block.

I like the idea of HCCI but reliably could be a problem, I would hate to see this become an RX-8.

I think my wording was poor, I meant that they probably have the smallest budget.
