The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

Not a bad price, but, a little on the high side. Mazda's gotta meet the margins, they don't have Ford to pad the bottom end.

What they should do is offer two engine options like how the Mazda 3 does with the choice of a 2.0L or 2.5L, but for the Miata, give it a choice between the 1.5L or the 2.0L. Can sure reduce base price.

^ I think the 1.5 will be a total game-changer fo the US-market! Imagine a rear-drive roadster for *less* than USD$20K!!!!

-> The only direct threat to this is Honda miraculously bought the S660 Kei-sport roadster/targa (as a S1000) to the US. That would give the best head-to-head comparo ever!!!

-> And I think it's also unfair on some-parts of the world that won't be getting the 2.0L engine, there should be a bi-engine support no matter where you are in the World. It what makes a car a true Global Car!

Aaaaaaand you just lost a buyer.

What are we doing, drag racing? A track car should have nothing other than a 2-way clutch LSD, ever. You simply can't control the car via throttle with a Torsen which means they're basically useless.

Why do people think the 1.5L engine would substantially lower the price or weight? It seems to be fundamentally the same engine with different displacement, and is hooked up to the same running gear; so any weight/cost savings would have to come from slashing standard equipment down to a level where most people wouldn't even consider the car.

Most of the LSD's in the NA's and NB's are Torsen, and they seem to work just fine. And are quite expensive to purchase, even used.

-> I don't get the disdain in regards to Torsen diffs?

-> When I had my S2000, it worked perfectly fine as long as you do its fluid change periodically. Sure they're not as good as a dedicated LSDs out there, but the Torsen does the job done in most situations!

-> In fact when I had my NA, I was aiming for for a used Torsen whenever is possible.

-> And when I tracked my S2K, I do throttle modulation (zero-counter drift) and the diff did just fine!

Torsens don't lock under deceleration which means you lose that aspect of off-throttle control. Understeer at speed in a rear-drive car is basically a non-issue with a 2-way LSD, on- or off-throttle. The Torsen will work in most situations but in extreme situations (like drifting, where off-throttle lockup is helpful) they fall short. If a used NA Torsen is $1,000 then you might as well save some money and get a Tomei 2-way for $900 and have all the throttle control and slip customization you could ask for.

Absolutely 100% agree that its the smart thing to do, buuuuut, I'm guessing Mazda needs to recoup some costs before they can proliferate on the formula. Still, the standard Sport as-is has a lot of extra frills that people would be willing to do without. Perhaps the forthcoming Fiat version will be the more spartan alternative?

-> Seems like the Club Edition might be the sweetest spot in the lineup:

Jalopnik

;)

Most of that Interior including the seats looks to have came from the 2, the Steering wheel looks like a carbon copy of Porsches Wheels though.

Saw the Autoblog article this morning. First 4 comments in the comment section were people complaining about the power. Even a guy that said his GF, who owns a NB Mazdaspeed, said the power was "wimpy". Funny, the Mazdaspeed only has 15 more hp and weighs more. I bet the power/weight on the ND is better.

Everyone* likes to mess with engines. Mazda is securing the(ir) aftermarket sales by leaving the engine alone. Very smart. Most people won't be able to drive the thing properly with 155hp let alone any more.

* Petrolheads. 'Other people' are mentioned in the last sentence above.

Once again, MAZDA said they're not playing price wars with the competition. Those who want one, will by one. Can't wait. :)

How's this for Kodo design?
MAzda Sofa and MAzda bicycle

Pics would be nice

Soo.. Club-spec with or without the additional danglies seems to be the sweet spot for gearhead. But that pricing is salty..

I feel like they have probably made the MX5 too premium when the idea is to be basic.

It comes off as like a Z4 or SLK Rival rather then a BRZ/86 Rival.

At this stage, with a car like this, it should have a delete options. A/C, radio, wind down Windows, thin seats, no sound deadening. No steering wheel buttons. Steel wheels. Black bumpers. Carbon bonnet and boot lid options. The car has been around that long to warrant those items and for the car to be tailored.

I know in Japan they sell the 86 with a Poverty pack, comes with basically everything Deleted even interior isulation and A/C, Radio, Alloy wheels (so its running on steelies) and Plastic bumpers:
