I agree,
they were urban/gangsta
Mainstreem/commercial rap really emphasizes on beat and not so good lyrics, as apposed to underground hip hop, is really all about lyrics, cause they arent usually trying to sell records, they are trying to make a point, as apposed to 50 cent jumping on stage with some gay ass song that you get bored of listening to after one time...

well thats my point of view anyways

bump. i like this thread. lets keep it going.

urban/gangsta, whatever you want to call it, there is a difference. this thread is about the latter.

what about Public Enemy? they are getting a bit old though!! its their last australian performance here soon, and its an over 18's event!! that sucks!

you guys forgot Cypress Hill and N.E.R.D. ...

also, xzibit, Nas, fat joe, big pun, & master p...but i'm guessin they're gangsta rap?

and i forgot the greatest of them all... Last Emperor. The guy has very very good lyrics and music...too bad he's only had like 3 cds in the past 10 years

For me, my definition of hip hop from the others is that its rap but with a band playing instead of crappy drums machines and synthesisers in the background. Just my opinion. Which also partly explains why I like Rage so much. I thought that they made a leap between rock with their heavy melody's and Zack De La Rochas rapping. All good. Some good stuff comming out of this thread btw. :)

I hate to bring it to some of the people here, but there is a huge difference between the mainstream rap they think is hip-hop and what is real hip hop.

Mainstream Rap
2Pac
50cent
3-6 Mafia
Busta Rhymes
Notorious B.I.G.
Wu-Tang
Snoop Dogg
Redman
Method Man
Eminem
Jay-Z
DMX
Petey Pablo
Xzibit
Master P
Ludacris
etc...

Real Hip-Hop
Swollen Members
Abstract Rude
Jurassic-5
Dilated Peoples
Aesop Rock
Mos Def
Moka Only
Son Doobie
Mr. Lif
The Roots
Mobb Deep
Neptunes
Run DMC
Onyx
Cypress Hill
etc...

Basically, Mainstream rap is stuff you hear and see everyday on MTV. It's the kind of stuff you listen to if you don't search around in small clubs and local scenes to find it. It is also what is heard on the radio, for the most part. Not saying that it is bad music, because I listen to some myself, but I am saying it is definitely not hip-hop.

Hip-hop is something that the artist works extremely hard on, for instance, Jurassic-5 makes all their music from the get go, including the beat. I don't see Snoop Dogg doing that, even with all of his millions. I am also not saying this is bad, it's just the way it is. Hip-hop also is a type of music that your friend tells you about, not something always heard about in public. It is more or less a secret passed on from person to person, which brings a different calm to the ear.

I am not prejudiced towards either style of music. I am just trying to show the GTP-ers the difference. So educate yourselves and have a nice day.

Wherever you got that little bit of information from is farsical. In fact, if he hated them, why would he co-star in a movie with nothing but them? You know the one, Italian Job. Also, there is no factual evidence backing your statement, so unless you have something significant, don't speak.

I've heard of him saying it before, and how his music was aimed towards everyone except white people.

I can't really say, because I don't listen to his music, but I hear he's also said it there, too.

But you know, just because the guy up and says it, doesn't mean it's factual at all.

That is true. I listen to his music now and then and there hasn't been a reference to him hating the caucasian persuasion in it, so far, that is. It might have been all a joke, but it really doesn't matter too much, I don't live near him. :D

Just some albums from my CD collection that you might want to check out...

Capone-n-Noreaga: The War Report
This album is phenomenol, there is no let up in quality here. Check out L.A., L.A. (Kuwait Mix), now that's rugged.

Tracks to check out: LA, LA (Kuwait Mix), TONY (Top of New York)

Jeru the Damaja: Wrath of the Math
Just get it.

Tracks to check out: Ya Playing Yaself, Revenge of the Prophet pt.5

Gangstarr: Moment of Truth
Consistant album where almost every track's a belter. But what else do you expect from DJ Premier?

Tracks to check out: You Know My Steez, Above the Clouds

Rawkus Records Present: Soundbombing Volume II
Big mixed up selection of true hip hop.

Tracks to check out: When it Pours it Rains (Diamond D), Crosstown Beef (Medina Green)

Notorious BIG: Ready to Die
I don't care what people have said about Biggie in this thread, while his lyrics may be ridiculous, his rhyming style is wicked and the beats are heavy.

Tracks to check out: Unbelievable, Warning

speaking of Gang Starr, I managed to pick up The Ownerz the other day. Classic album. Luckily my HMV has got some great underground albums as well as mainstream rap so thats always a plus.

Another group to look out for is Ugly Duckling. Their not exactly your orthodox rap group but I suggest you try their album Taste The Secret. It is mega and a great summer album to put on the stereo.

Triple Six Mafia is not Mainstream Rap. They are rarely heard on the radio and they are rarely on MTV, which is one of the few reasons why I love Hypnotize Minds Records. They make all of their beats and DJ Paul and Juicy J have produced over 30 cds for HMR, mainstream my ass, you dont see 3 6 releasing like 10 singles like 50 Cent and unless you are in and around Memphis I seriously doubt that you will hear them on the radio, get your facts straight toyomatt.
