Just thought i'd make an RTS discussion thread since I didn't see one.

Thursday I got Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots, the expansion pack to Rise of Nations. It's a real fun game. I'm playing the "Conquer the World" campaign as America.

Some games, such as Starcraft 2 have their own threads, so if you want to discuss those games, go to their respective threads.

Well I'm currently playing through the Commandos games on my laptop. Was planning on working my way through them in order, but commandos 1 plays horribly with my laptop mouse. I was a fan of these games years ago, but never made any progress. Now, I'm on the second last mission and making steady progress.

Commandos still falls under the "real time strategy" banner, but there are few, if any games like it... Unless someone can enlighten me.

Just started with Company of Heros. Pretty cool game so far.

I'm also playing some Rome: Total War right now.

I was a massive RTS fan but in recent years I have to admit I lost a bit of interest the last few years. Recently however I've gone on a "relive my youth" thing and buying up a bunch of old games on ebay that I once owned with the intention of playing them again. A fair few of these are RTS titles such as Warcaft & Warcraft 2 being notable favorites. I also picked up mint condition C&C & Red Alert in the original big box format:

Red Alert was my favorite of the entire C&C series, I lost interest at RA2 as the machines etc started to really deviate too much from reality and got a little silly. Generals was a nice breath of fresh air to the series however and I really enjoyed it.

Would the game Cathrine fall in to this topic? It's a VERY good game, hard being almost suicidally difficult, with 8 endings and an amazing story line.

I havn't played it but my understanding is that it's a puzzle/platform game not a real time strategy game. RTS usually refers to games where you command a squad, platoon or army in a (traditionally) top down view. Games like Command & Conquer, Warcraft (the good ones) and Starcraft would fall under this category.

Anyone else played World in Conflict? I've had it for sometime now but my previous laptop didn't have the power to run it with decent graphics. As I upgraded to a nice and powerful laptop that can handle anything thrown at it, I just started playing it and am really enjoying it. I dig the concenpt that you don't get to make more units but have to strategize more carefully to make sure you make it through with the limited units you are given. I recently purchased this collectors edition as I've had my eye on it for sometime now. Comes with an actual chunk of the Berlin Wall!

Okay thanks for clearing that up for me. Would other games, age of empires and Civilizations, fall under this category then?

Age of Empires is most certainly classified as an RTS. Civ would be more a turn based strategy game but I'm sure it's not a huge issue for others if it's discussed here.

Edit: I've never played AOE actually. From what I can tell, it's immensely popular. Any one on here play it? Which would you recommend me to try first?

AoE 2 was probably the most notable in my opinion. However, I think Age of Mythology was better, even though it was a spin off series.

AOE2 was fun. 1 of the good things about it is that it doesn't need a powerfull PC, so anyone can play it.

I also really like Supreme Commander, but don't have the time to really train on it.

I also played Medieval 2: Total War and liked it, but would have been more fun if my laptop was more powerfull.

And from the C&C series, I only played Generals. Really fun game as well.

The only thing that I hated about AoE1 was the creepy defeat screen.

Medieval 2: Total War, Sudden Strike and my favourite, Combat Mission: Shock Force (particularly enjoy the British Army and the Soviets in Afghanistan expansions).

Well I picked up Civ 5 (borderline RTS I understand) last month and as this is my very first Civ title I am having a fantastic time with it. Heck my very first game, played the tutorial mode's duel mode, lasted some 21 hours. For one game! Now I fully appreciate where the Civ "just one more turn and it is sunrise" dynamic came from. Great game, has some issues to be true, but still a great game :D.

Haven't been able to play very much of Age of Empires, but from what I've read AoE II is still considered one of the very best examples of the genre. To whit they still have the demo available:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/age2/downloads.htm#trial

And the Limited/Collector's Edition is only $15, check that now it is only $9.49 new at amazon and it is packed in with both the original AoE and the highly regarded AoE II Conquerors expansion.

Unlike Civ 5, the MP for AoE is supposed to generally fantastic. Also the scenario packs are supposed to be very well done as well. Alas another thing Civ 5 is severely lacking in, actually the game only comes with 1 scenario mission.

For the history buffs out there the instruction manual for AoE II, assuming they still pack one in, is very meaty and every unit in the game includes a paragraph of historical background. Always cool to learn something while gaming.

Yay, someone else also plays strategy games, here is my current deal:
hrp6dzH

I play it a lot, and I'm creating a level for it, however time strains and newer games overcome this purpose.

I also used to play AoE II, World in Conflict(atrocious sys requirements, I dropped when I had to sell my rig)however I had really good fun with it, there is also Brothers in Arms(which can be consider as an RTS mixed with FPS, really, really good) and of course Company of heroes(however I didn't like it that much).

Played all of the age of empires, except Age of Mythology.

Here's what I'm currently playing so far:

Just to revive this thread as I have been playing more and more of Supreme Commander.

I actually find it a better game than Supreme Commander 2, as it is more structured and you have to really plan ahead to get the best out of it. Being locked to a particular tier system and needing to create other units to get the higher tiers makes for a more strategic game, rather than Sup Com 2, which the units upgrade along with the research points. Which made it a bit too causal and too easy.

Lately on Supreme Commander, been playing 6 AI on Medium difficulty (not Hard) on Skirmish Mode as there's no actual multiplayer on Steam anymore and I am finding it is relatively easy to defeat them, just that it takes time as I haven't quite got the handle on the build orders and the most effective way of actually leading a squad. Yet.

Most recently Skirmish isn't finished yet as one of the damned AI actually launched a nuke strike on my base when I had forgotten to build anti-nuke missiles. At least I had already moved most of my units to a different base anyway... Still, that hurts.

I have Company of Heroes but haven't really carried on playing it as the style of game isn't quite to my taste.

What's a good RTS to get then? Only one I have played and also enjoyed was Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, and that used the AOE2 engine. I haven't played any since. I don't want nothing too hectic!

Company of heros is great and it's only 10$ right now on steam for the entire package.

Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor, by common agreement (not mine, others), isn't as good as the original and the first DLC.

There's Warcraft 3 if you wanted slightly older and more cartoon-ish but with some surprising complexity.

Command + Conquer is always a good punt and has some good gameplay there.

Supreme Commander allows you to turtle really well if you wanted to have a game to turtle in, before embarking on an Gengis Kahn-esque domination of the map, ranging from 5x5km to 81x81km size.

Defensse Grid: The Awakening, while a tower defence game, can be said to be a RTS in the sense that you have to strategically place your "units" for the maximum damage at the minimum cost to you.

Company of Heros would be my pick too. I had the first one already but grabbed the other two from the sale.

I don't know what you define as top hectic but League of Legends is a free RTS with a massive following. If your looking for multiplayer it would be this or Starcraft 2.

Oh just remembered one of the Total War series of games like Total War Rome might be a good choice.

Sorry to bump this but I've got a free code for Company of Heroes on Steam if anybody would like it.

Age Of Empires 3 was one of the most fun RTS games I have ever played. I posted quiet a few pictures in the AOE3 thread. I wish something like that would come to the 360.

On consoles guys, you have any recomendations?

I loved R.U.S.E but the custom matched against the AI was limited to an hour in length.
This really killed your strategy because you had to go for it straight away. No building up and coming back from the brink.

PC was unlimited time I think. Must have had some memory limitation on console but I'm sure they could have worked around it even if it meant capping your resorces.

Shame.

Funny enough two strategy games were announced for PC and Xbox today.

Carrier command and a 1920's gangster themed strategy from the Tropico guys.

It like buses. Wait forever and two come.
