he record stood for seven years as the pinnacle of production car achievement - and now it looks as though it's been broken twice in a matter of weeks.

The legendary McLaren F1 set the benchmark for being the fastest in March 1998, at a mighty 240.14mph. But then in February, a Koenigsegg CCR took the crown during testing at the Nardo circuit in Italy, nudging the record to 240.387mph. But now that figure has been well and truly shattered.

Bugatti has revealed the Veyron has been clocked at a staggering 248.5mph during runs at parent firm VW's test track in Wolfsburg, Germany. A spokes-man said: "Everyone here is thrilled by this. We had to do three runs in each direction, but this has been measured using precision equipment. The car actually went faster than 248mph, but we're not releasing that speed."

However, the event hasn't been officially recognised by Guinness World Records (GWR) - at least not yet. It seems bosses haven't yet bothered to contact GWR to claim the prestigious title. Hein le Roux is the organisation's motoring expert, and told us he knew nothing about the Veyron's challenge. "We've been in touch with Bugatti in the past about this, but not recently," he said. "It sounds as if they've done everything correctly, as long as the timing people provide proof of the result."
Haven't seen anyone post anything on this yet.
So, right now, we do know the car is officially going into production, but for the 240+Mph time, Guinness has not taken it yet, so this speed is currently unofficial, although, I really think the car is going to make it.

For some reason, I thought Bugatti was French. But I think they are Italian? I think they are owned by VW anyway, but anyone know where Bugatti is from?

I think Bugatti is French.
Honestly, first time I saw their EB110, I thought they were Italian until lately.

But yeah, Bugatti is French.
How Viper? According to their site, they're French.

EDIT:
Bugatti Automobiles SAS
This is the official website of Bugatti Automobiles SAS, luxury motor car manufacturer in Molsheim (France). On these pages you will find the fascinating...

The founder was Italian and the cars are made in France, IIRC.

The Veyron is a pointless car. Any manufacturer who puts a 1 carat diamond in the interior of their "supercar" is missing the point of the truest meaning of a supercar. This is quick in a straight line and not much else, to be bought by people who have too much money and poor taste.

Maybe they originated in Italy? It may have been under French ownership in recent years, which would explain why I thought it was an French company.

👍 Thanks Viper, McLaren and amp88.

Yeah I knew the man Ettore Bugatti was Italian, so I assumed so was the company.

Can you please explain how you know the Veyron isn't fast around corners? Also the Veyron isn't meant to be a stripped out racer for the road, it's a luxury car, it's more of a super grand tourer if anything.

How much does it weigh? I know it's not supposed to be a stripped out racer, I never said it was.

How wide is it's track? how low is it's center of gravity? how wide are it's tyres? how's the suspension set? and how are it's aerodynamics? All these play a large part in a cars cornering ability, remember the McLaren Merc SLR is a beastly sized car weight wise and that didn't stop it from being one seriously fast car round the Ring and TopGears track amongst others, because everything else was set up to compensate I don't see the Veyron being different.

Well these are the lengths, width and height which the concept was researched at.

length 4380 mm / 172.4 inch
width 1994 mm / 78.5 inch
height 1206 mm / 47.5 inch

Let's wait and see, eh? It may lap very quickly, but that'll be due to the fact it's got almost 1000hp rather than it being able to corner quickly

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it will handle like a Lotus Elise , I'm not saying it WILL handle well because until I see some reviews and stuff I won't know, but the fact that it's heavy doesn't mean it won't be able to, thats the point I'm making. The SLR is slightly over 100kg's lighter and that can handle rather well, the Aston DB9's hardly light and that can handle well. We'll just have to wait and see.

Well the concept's weight was 922.0 ft lbs.

I think that is more likeley going to be the torque figure than the weight of the car!

yeah, seriously. where'd his brain go?

that car is just hideous. World's fastest roach.

I have a feeling its looks will grow on people like some of those ugly BMW's designed by Chris Bangle.

The Mclaren SLR has air conditioning... That is too much in a super car.

Veyron seems good to me. The styling isn't too bad and it has two keys. Normal and 'speed' mode.

You'd need to be power hungry...

And many people say people drive flash cars to compensate...

Which is bollocks, it might be true for many people who drive flash cars but theres people who buy them because they like cars, theres people who buy them becuase they like driving fast and take trips to Germany a lot (which is a common reason) and theres people who buy them for attention (another common one).

EVO: "Every owner will be supplied with a special second key, made from aluminium in best Bugatti lightweight tradition (originally it was going to be silver but it was deemed to be too heavy)...this key has to be insterted to the left of the driver's seat, down by the sill...the car begins a series of safety checks...Once complete, the chassis squats to just under 65mm above the road at the front and 70mm at the rear...the angle of incidence of the rear aerofoil is minimised to reduce wind resistance. The final action of this high-speed mode is to disable all limiters (the car is otherwise limited to 375kph)." Excessive, or what?

No not really when you consider what the car will be going through when you put you're foot down. You don't want it to take off cos theres too much air getting under it.

No, see, I wasn't saying it was excessive - I was just expressing how impressed I was. To be honest I'd never dare to fiddle with that second, special key made of best lightweight aluminium (considering I've never been over 150mph as a passenger and never been above 60kmph as a driver). But for anyone who buys this machine, I hope they appreciate the "excessiveness".

I have a feeling that 2nd key is going to be the reason that 95% of these cars are destroyed (Hey, sooner or later).

Bam

In that case I agree with you, sorry for misunderstanding 👍.
