I like watches, but I've become stuck on a certain line of them, and I'm considering getting my third (broke the first...

Oh man! The miracle of Citizen Eco-Drive - IT LIVES!

I broke the Bezel, and had it taken in for a repair, they quoted me a figure to replace it, and then I didn't pick it up (so yes, it's my fault), it stayed in a draw, then I finally remembered, picked it up, and it was dead.

I left it out on a window sill for a couple of days, but to no avail, it remained dead. Then yesterday, since I've decided to get a new watch (a JY8020-52E), I thought, why not wear this old, broken, heavy watch, so then I can more appreciate the new one - and low and behold, after no more than say... an hour of walking in the hot Australian sun, she began ticking again!

I didn't want the watch to die again, so overnight I plugged my phone in, and charged the watch by using a 'flashlight' app, and left the phone under it (not to close, lay the phone down on a box of tissues, the watch on the floor).

Now its at 3/4 bars, so it should be up quite a way in terms of battery life, had to do the factory reset (which is actually a bit of fun), make the custom city (Melbourne), set the time, but one thing that I found incredible too, the seconds hand, was perfectly in line with my phone on internet time... I'm going to assume it was completely dead, and just a co-incidence that it restarted correctly (1 in 60 chance after all, not too astronomical).

I think I'll buy my new watch still, but after a while I'll save up and pay to have this one's mineral glass redone and the bezel replaced.

Tritium tends to be much brighter then traditional lume, but they do tend to fade over time (a few years, so nothing much to worry about).

Yeah, Luminox claimed that the Tritium will last for 25 years but from some watch forums I have visited, some even get theirs to last only for 3-5 years which is far off the claimed lifetime... Hmmm.

They speak the truth. Mine didn't last more that 3 years, either. Bad watch, if you're buying it for the glow in the dark feature.

I also had a Smith & Wesson watch made by Luminox. That lasted just as long.

Amazing regarding the titanium, mine was still perfect after 4 years of use everyday, what do you guys do with them? Work I'm the mud or something? I think just being generally careful when wearing your watch (taking it off when using a laptop for example), wearing long sleeve shirts and jackets often, don't see how you 'couldn't' get to 20-25 years

It's kind of disappointing especially when they claimed it to last up to 25 years but in actuality it will just last for 3-5 years. Felt cheated..

Thankfully I'm not buying it because of the glow in the dark feature though, sure it does look nice in the dark. Just that the watch looks really nice and build quality feels good.

Nothing special for me, in terms of model. A Fossil FS-4531

Comfortable, good-looking, and durable. Fits my needs.

It was a "out of the blue" gift for being a good Dad. Thought that was rather special. Made me almost cry.

I used to work at Fossil. I snagged a few while I was there. For the price, they are a good bargain. And they have an exceptional customer service experience too. They are even starting to sell genuine Swiss movements, now, although for the price I'd be looking at so many other options at that point.

Nice watch, any reason for the map background?

Although it suits the watch, I must say.

Going to the Nordschleife on Sunday. I do take my psp with gps software withm me, but I am old enough to trust heavily on physical maps :D

About the custom GTP watch, is it automatic or a hand winder?

You don't seriously go around with that watch, do you?

Only on special occasions. Like business meetings or funerals etc...

Wind powered!

Nah, not interested. It doesn't show the date.

:P+:D =

But it has "Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, Skyline, MX-5, MX-5, MX-5, MX-5, MX-5, MX-5, MX-5, MX-5" engraved on the back!

My girlfriend bought me a new watch this weekend.

It's a Skagen 915XLBSB and the first one I've gotten with Skagen's mesh band. It's pretty simple looking, but cool at the same time. I've been wanting to get a non-digital square/rectangle watch for a while now so I was pretty happy when so gave it to me.

Like most Skagen's I assume it's made in China (despite saying Denmark on it), but it has a Japan movement so I'm not real concerned with reliability. My other Skagen works great.

I don't wear a watch. If I need the time I'll look at my cell phone.

How many of you have custom GTPlanet watches? I know I do.

Something wrong with the hands on that watch, Jet, better return it and get a refund. It will never be right - even twice a day.

Take another watch and try to duplicate that time - legitimately.
Unless you want to physically move that hour hand.

I always loved those jokes  .

Coincidence or are you deliberately trying to copy everything I say on this thread  ?

He should get a G-Shock.

I got mine in China, they are really cheap there.

So I've discovered I have $200 in Amazon gift cards and promotional cash saved up and I'm interested in getting another watch. I'm willing to put a little more with it so somewhere in the $250-$300 range. Any suggestions? I want something that has a reputable name behind it, so no Invicta or Stuhrling. Also no G-Shocks, I think they're awful watches.

I prefer bracelet bands and I'm not really a fan of leather, but that's not really that important. I also like watches with cool or unique features, but that's not really that important either. Style really isn't that big of a deal since I have watches for every occasion.

I tried look on reddit under r/watches, but it seems most of the advice isn't really good. I know a few of you collect watches on here, so I'm curious to hear your input.

Are you fussy at all about whether its quartz or mechanical? Can you elaborate a bit on "reputable name"....does it have to be swiss or more like a Seiko/ Orient/ Citizen?

Orient have some unique designs going on (partial skeleton/ open heart) and usually are dirt cheap for US peeps via their official US website.

Citizen has the Nighthawk (I have one posted a few pages back from my collection) which is a pilots watch with a slide rule as a bezel in your price range too...

Edit: Wow, what's going on with Orient's prices - they used to be much much lower then that. If you do decide you like one of those, they usually publish discount codes on watch forums, so let me know...

I'm not really fussy about quartz or mechanical, I have both types in my collection and they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I know there are quite a few people that won't be touch anything that's not a mechanical which always surprises me.

As for a reputable name, mainly just ones not associated with junk for the price. I've never heard anything remotely good about Stuhrling or Invicta, mainly because they are terrible for the price you pay for them. But as far as Seiko and Citizen go, I'd consider those to be pretty good. I don't expect Rolex quality out of a $300 watch, but at the same time I don't expect Timex, department store $20 watch quality either.

I've never really looked at Orient watches so I'll check them out.

The Nighthawk does look pretty cool though and I do have that on my potential list. There's actually a few Citizen's I've thought about since I've never owned one before. I like some of the watches in the Drive series as well as their Primo line.

It's also been recommended that I take a look at the Bulova Precisionist line and there are always a couple Fossil watches I keep my eye on from time to time.

I love the Citizen, its a very well made watch - EcoDrive is the way to go with quartz IMO as you never have to fuss about changing battery/ stuffing up water proofing seals.

Bulova offer a lot of value, that would definitely be another range to check out 👍.

I would not personally classify Fossil as anything more then a well marketed store brand quality watch. At the end of the day, its a mass manufactured watch with a well known name slapped on it - I would steer clear if you are looking for a cut above.

That's a fair point about Fossil watches, there's just a few that I think look cool and are fairly inexpensive. Maybe I'll just leave those as watches I get as gifts since my girlfriend likes to buy me watches but doesn't have a ton of money to spend on them.

But I'll have a look at some of the Bulova's and see what I come up with. I'll let you know if I have any questions. Thanks for the input 👍

It's a seiko 5 snk805 automatic, and its great. 37mm OTTOMH and for my first non quartz watch its served me well. It's even better if you add in it was on offer!
