The Watch Discussion Thread

I have a Citizen Eco-Drive Blue Angels. It's solar powered, and has a bunch or crazy numbers and measurements around the edge of the face that I'm told will help calculate fuel consumption in an F18, if you are a Blue Angles pilot...except the Blue Angles disbanded after a budget cut. In a way that makes the watch cooler, though.

I also have several cheap Wal-Mart watches that I wear whenever I'm afraid of getting the citizen dirty.

When i see digital watches, and in particulair these ones I always get this Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy quote in my head. :D

HHGTTG
Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.

Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

This planet has—or rather had—a problem, which was this: most of the people on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.

And so the problem remained; lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.

After the the discussion a couple of pages back, I ended up getting the Seiko SSB103. I bought it in the beginning of the year, and it has some scuff marks on it. I changed out the metal bracelet for a cheap leather band, though the process took longer than I would've liked. The blue face on the watch looks pretty cool.

@ROAD_DOGG33J - when I finally decide to break down and buy a new watch, it will almost assuredly be a stainless band with blue face chrono. LOVE that look. 👍

@Mike Rotch, or anyone for that matter what do you make of this? I reached my ten year milestone at work (well a year and a half ago actually) and as such I get a choice of various gifts from here.
What do you make of the strap can it be swapped out for a leather job? To be totally honest the watch itself doesn't do much for me along with the other choices but I have to pick something.

It's going to be that or the earrings and give them to Bronny.

This, but tell her you bought them as a surprise. Instant Man Credits and free weekends away with the guys. ;)

...or the Bosch.

Congrats mate, 10 years in one job is nothing to be sniffed at 👍

In terms of the watch, if you're not that crazy about it, I wouldn't go for it - it will likely just sit around in your drawer making you feel bad that you aren't wearing it. FWIW, that model can be had for half that price online. The strap can definitely be swapped out for a leather one, in the same manner as your Casio (either getting a jeweller or finding the right tool to remove the spring bars at the back). Here is what it looks like on leather:

Eleven and a half so far this time, worked there previously for nine. Left and got a call/good offer to come back after a few years. Wow that's 21 years at the place :ouch:, sad thing is one guy that got an award the same day as me has 45 years up.

Yep makes sense 👍, between my other watches I would rank it on looks down the line so it wouldn't get much wrist time.

I hadn't checked but figured as much.

Does look alot better with the leather though, hmm I'll think about it but it's looking like the earrings are going to get the nod.

Thanks mate 👍.

I feel like a bumper. But @Mike Rotch wished me to post my latest acquisition. I wouldn`t call it an investment. It`s the well known CASIO F-91W and I did purchase it for nerdy reasons only.

The watch has the most basic functions of a digital timekeeper. Plus light.

That watch just makes me feel so old, @Monatsende. Come to think of it, maybe I should strap one on, see if it makes me feel young.
So many memories connected with those Casios when they were so popular that everybody had to have one. When was this . . . '76 . . . '77 . . when they first became trendy?

Thinking about upgrading my casio world time to something around $300, preferably less. My only real requirement is that it has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant enough to wear outside on a rainy day. Do you guys have any recommendations?

I've been searching a lot of watches lately in many price ranges and in that range I really liked this Hamilton, if you search around it can be had for closer to $300 or maybe even less. It looks classy, comfortable and durable. It's mechanical with an automatic movement, has the sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 100M. It also has good reviews on Amazon. I'd have one but I like thinner and smaller diameter watches.

Can't find it for less than $380, which is just out of my price range. Nice watch though.

Thinking about getting this Seiko (sary057):

$300 on seiyajapan, but the site isn't up at the moment.

That looks really nice. Do you have any preference in terms of materials/movement/size? Have you thought about buying pre-owned?

I don't care about movement too much. Would be fine with either quartz or mechanical to be honest.
Would like to keep it stainless steel, no gold plating, strap can be leather. I like simple designs.
I think around 40mm is good for me. My casio is 43mm and it doesn't look too big, but I think if it were an analog watch it would.
I've considered buying pre-owned, but I haven't looked into it that much. I'd like something that still has a warranty in case it breaks I guess unless it's a really good deal.

Since you're good with quartz, I've had great experience with my Swiss army (now Victorinox Swiss Army) watches. I have two of the basic "original"ones and they've worked perfectly for 10+ years with only having to change the batteries so I'd reccommend the brand. Here's one you might like:

It's also anti reflective sapphire and water resistant to 100M

I kinda like the looks of the Seiko better, but I'll think about it. Heard a lot of good things about Victorinox.

Seikos make very good watches that have a great bang for the money. I own 2 (1 automatic and 1 quartz), that I switch between wearing each day and they have stood up just fine, hot or cold, rain or shine. Really, almost all new watches are fine to wear on a rainy day.

I don't have an image of me wearing it but this is mine. High gear Alti-XT. I needed something with an alarm when I was still in scouts as the SPL. Plus it had a few cool things which I never use...

Plan on getting this one day, even if I have to rob Lotterer for it:

I like the Audi Sport. Yummy.

Don't even get me started on Seikos. Owned several - never let me down. Some going for decades now. Definitely a brand to look at.

Looking through all my 'wristlets' the other day (haha - yes, that means 'wristwatches - or 'watches' for short) I realised that barely any of my watches come with numerals - and if they do they are Roman, not Arabic.
Wonder about the faces in countries that use neither.
In any case most of my watches merely have markers for the numerals.

Just something new I learned about myself. Gad. And I thought I knew myself well. Got to watch it.
Here's an older watch that surfaced recently as I poked around the collection:

Terrible pic. Will adjust later. Got to run for now - domestic upheavals!
