To PD: Instrument panel details and sharpness

Hi, I've noticed that the gauges on GT5P are below par compared to rfactor, NFS Shift and even Midnight Club LA. compared with the PC simulator GT5P had less sharpness and "photo realistic" look besides, only speedometer and tachometer turbo boost are functioning.

I am a GT die hard fan since 1997, but I am a bit disappointed about the quality of the instrument cluster visiually and technically.

P.S. Im also a flight simmer and I have some add on software (PSS Concord, Wilco PIC 737) just to name a few that authentically depicts the real instrument panel of the aircraft to the point that it is hard differentiate between the real photo and the sim.

Regards,

In terms of sharpness, I think PD did a great job. The only exception I've found are the Audi TT's gauges, which are so muddy and distorted that you can't even read them.

Remember, GT5 Prologue is just that....a Prologue, it's just an introductory piece to GT5. For all we know this might be one of the things they rectified in the full game. GT has always had immense attention to detail, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's better in the full game.

Yamauchi said that the interior details wont be finished in Prologue and we shouldnt expect fully detailed cockpits until GT5 comes out.

This could be the usual PR blah though. ;)

Really, that's great news, i hope all the guages and lights work in the final release. I wanna see details like this.

As for the sharpness, it's much better in 1080p than 720, probably the only reason i prefer playing in 1080, otherwise i would prefer the higher AA on the cars in 720. Turn the sharpness up on the TV aswell. But yeah i do think they need improvement, at least if they want to compete with the picture clarity of PC sims.

I was using a car yesterday and I think it was supposed to tell you what gear you are in between the speedo and tach. It said 1 in all gears, but it was really a l not a 1 so i dont know if it was supposed to change or not. I will try to figure out what car it was later on. Anyone notice this?

I can tell you that the details of the cockpit in the GT-R in GT5p are the best I have seen on a console racer to date. Granted, everything can be improved, but I can't image a big need to change what is almost perfect.

I remember an NFS Shift video, and to me the dash of the GTR looked much better, can't remember which vid it was now, was a while back.

Edit: Bingo, it's a bit dark though

It's really hard to tell from the video (btw, the sounds in that video are horrid, as is the UI for the HUD). I concede that the LCD display looks better than the GT5p version, but since the rest of the dash is so dark, I can't really say if the remainder of the cockpit is as finely detailed.

I also notice the guages seem better, like the Gear indicator seems to be made up of distinctive individual lights, and more of the guages seem on. When you look at a pic of the real car you will see what i mean.

The MFD is a bit better animated, but the overall cockpit doesnt look really better to me.
I can read the numbers etc. just as good in GT5P (which is already over 1 1/2 years older than SHIFT).

I have a poster of a GT-R (has inside and out) on my wall in my garage 👍

I will have to check out an HD version of the cockpit to make a final judgment call on that.

Just for a better comparison.
Like i said, the MFD is better animated in Shift, but the rest looks better to me in GT5P, also more high-res.

I am gonna have to agree with Ace on this one was well, based on those two vids at least. Shift looks like it has about a gallon of armor all on the dashboard, and the detail is missing in the glossy appearance.

Actually i think it's just the brightness, or shadowing, and the vibrancy of the guages in GT5 that is worse, not neccessarily the modelling itself.

I prefer the darker, more stealth looking look myself, looks silly with dial brigtness way up.

Edit: Colours seem more accurate to me in SHIFT. Blacks look black and reds look red, not to mention the sky.

Note the dash by the passenger airbag. It has a more "flat" appearance, as seen in GT5p. It's not so "wet" black looking.

I guess it's all down to the lighting and situation really which one is more realistic, I do prefer the overall look of shift though when it comes to lighting and colours. And the better road textures.

Yeah they do look similar, like i said it depends on lighting situation, I think on the brighter tracks like HSR and Eiger the shadows and colours seem a bit off. The car models look better on darker tracks or in the shade, hence why the interiors and cars themselves look better in the tunnel at Eiger than outside:sly:.

@ dancardesigner: What's the dash in the 1st pic out of? That is one schmick speedo, tacho and boost gauge. Features aG-Force meter as well. Love it.

It's the Infiniti Essence Concept, i agree looks like a fine watch, a high tech one at that.

Again, thanks to all for being interested in this topic, unfortunatley I do not have my desktop PC to showcase some of the flight sim cockpits and how they look authentic. What PD could do is to remove the digital speed readout from the left side of the screen as almost everyone would look at it instead of the actual guage. However, I believe if they do this at the current setup it would be not legible for sim racers.

also, the GT-R gear shift warning is not functional and it is only a simple red LED, and I agree that the dashboard layout in GT5P is superior to Shift and FM3 but what I am really concerned about is the guages resolution/sharpness and functionality.

My set up used to include 50" 1080P plasma and Epson 1080P homecinema projector.
