As a new convert to the "beautiful game" and an uninformed Yank, I have to ask:

What's Sir Bobby doing these days? I heard on "Fox Football Friday" that Robson was fired because they didn't make the Champions League. Is this true? If so, it seems they've shot themselves in the foot, considering where they finished this year.

How long will Shearer stick around? (I've heard reports of him leaving/retiring. What's going on?)

Do the Magpies' prospects look any better for next season?

Will they ever come to America, so I can finally see them in person? :)

Sorry for any dumb questions, but I just started watching this past season. I never thought much of football, thinking it was just some prissy game the rest of the world played. Now I love to watch real football, and can't stand American football.

I guess I became a fan of Newcastle for a rather odd reason: the team sponsored the Lister Storm GT1 sports car team at Le Mans a few years ago. That and I really like the beer. :)

Newcastle Brown Ale is a great drink:cheers:

Yup They fired Robson for not doing well enough, even though he is one of the best managers in the country. They should have held onto him in my opinion.

Shearer might be on his way out this season as he is getting a bit old now. But then again people have been saying that for the past three seasons. There are rumors at the moment that he might take over the managerial position at the club when he retires. I can't see Souness staying for long.

And I am very pleased to hear about your conversion to the beautiful game. Are there many channels in the US that allow you to watch it? Try and catch the FA Cup final between Arsenal and Manchester United on the 20th of this month. Should be a cracker of a game 👍

Shearer as manager? Not a bad idea, although he will be missed on the field. Are player/managers allowed? :)

Only two channels show football here, Fox Soccer Channel and one new one whose name escapes me. ESPN only focuses on football when talking about Man U or Beckham. Most of the other games are on pay-per-view. I think I'll pony up the dough for that next year, since FSC has only shown five or six Newcastle matches this year.

Thanks for the tip about the FA Cup final. I will certainly watch if anyone shows it here. I saw the Arsenal/Man U Premiership game that took place a month or two ago and that was a great match.

Thanks again.

Player/Managers are allowed and it happens a lot in the lower divisions. The most recent I can think of is Gianluca Vialli at Chelsea in 1999 (I think).

Good to see we have another NUFC fan. In case any of you haven't seen the new kit...

Thanks for answering that.

Saw the new kit on their website. I kinda like it. Guess I have to order a new jersey, but with the exchange rates and shipping across the pond, it gets rather expensive. Hope they don't change designs too often. :)

All Premiership teams do. 👎

They keep the black and white stripes but they'll change little details each season, and sometimes sponsors. Every time they get a new away kit or European kit it will be a different colour to the last one though.

If Norwich stay up, I'm buying their away kit along with a Valencia kit (don't ask) but no Newcastle kit for me this year.

Just the teams' way of getting more money from fans. Over here, NASCAR teams run "special" paint schemes for some races, because they know the rednecks will buy more model cars, shirts, hats, etc. with the different designs.

Sorry I haven't checked this thread in a while, but thanks for the link. Hopefully, they'll get their **** together for next season.

BTW, $90 for a new home jersey. God, I hate that falling dollar. :grumpy:

Finally, Fox Soccer Channel showed a Newcastle game in the U.S.

Man, they got hosed today with those penalty calls. Jenas sent off and Henry scoring on a penalty kick. Both bad calls. I'm a football newbie and I know those were bad calls.

But they really put up a good fight for 80 minutes, even when they were down to 10 men. Let's hope this doesn't demoralize them too much. They have a good team this year and I'm sure they will do much better than last year.

It was a good call on both counts. The challenge was from behind, very reckless, and had a following leg.

Yeah, you can't go through someones standing leg like that and get away with it. Jenas could easily have broken the other guy's leg if his studs had dug in to the ground.

It completely split all the pundits. Sky (Andy Gray) thought he shouldn't have gone as it was a challenge for the ball which he won and there was no intent to injure. BBC (Alan Hanson) reckoned he should have gone. Being that the ref couldn't see it then how could he make the decision without talking to the line-o? The ref has now admitted he made a mistake. At least we battled well I suppose. Emre looked good again.

Okay, looks like I'm in the minority here. But certainly it wasn't deserving of a red card? At least the ref changed it to a yellow.

But they did play well, even down a man. (At least until that other penalty.) To hold off a team like Arsenal for 80 minutes, especially with 10 men, bodes well for the season, don't you think?

I hope so. With not being in Europe hopefully Big Al will play more league and cup games. We still need to sign a striker though. The word is Owen is off to Liverpool and Souness has reopened talks about Anelka.

Have you been reading the tea-leaves or have you seen/heard something? Any evidence? I really hope he does even though I don't like him and think his 1st touch is pants. Can't argue with his goal record though.

no evidence :D

but, shepard is in talks, owen is on the bench for england, man utd havnt made an offer, owen said in the press he hasnt ruled out newcastle, why would benitez buy back the player he sold.

Well I guess we'll see within 2 weeks. I hope he does but all the rumours point to Liverpool. Did they not sell Owen before Benitez joined?

Jenas didn't deserve a red, if you watch it in slow-mo he gets the ball and catches the player with his other leg, not foot. The foot he used to go for the ball got the ball and brushed past the other players foot. For a straight red you need to make a maliciouse or dangerous challenge, Jenas got the ball and didn't go in two footed and didn't smack the player with his studs thats normally a yellow and thats what it should have been on the day. Newcastle didn't deserve that, but it might work in their favour since it's an extra defeat to go against Souness to make the board look for a replacment.
