Round 3 - Red Bull Ring, Austria.
The Tour climbed into the heights of the Austrian mountains for round 3, and TPC European Region Race Reporter Hans Ondeveel caught up with Honda driver and semi-mythical Scandiwegian rally legend Max Attack.
The NSX driver, who finished last in the opening race with a slightly better showing in the feature, reflected on the weekend's action, whilst feeding his rain sodden race suit through what appeared to be a genuine Victorian era clothes mangle.
"Well," the Scandiwegian strained, "This was very tactical weekend for us because we bribed the Austrian meteorologists society and got a good head start on the rain. The boys over in Japan assured us the car is the best in the field in the wet,"
"I will be very honest with you, I do not like Austria, it is entirely too mountainous, and it is impossible to listen to them speak German and keep a straight face. So I really have been looking to spend as little time in the country as I can manage, and this meant very little practice."
Max pegged up his race suit over a disused tyre rack, leading me over to a food services table stuffed with Germanic fare. The driver skipped over all the food available, filling a tumbler glass with the German teenager's favourite - peppermint schnapps.
"The dry race, well, to be honest, I really was waiting for it to end. The back was scrappy and these beemers are pulling burnouts off the grid - I guess that helps for their target audience, so I am making progress a bit but, soon losing it. In honesty there was more grip than I was expecting"
"On top of that, you know, we only just got the little power boost so, I do not want to drive full beans and smash everyone and then we have a disadvantage in the car again, you know? So I let
@Pigems go for the points there, because I am not going to trouble these nutters after Brands."
"The rain for me, is much better, coming from the great stages of Scandiwegia - always it rains, and snows, we are much used to this. I would have liked four wheel drive and a dustbin turbo like my road car," Max flicks some schnapps over his shoulder with a gesture towards his Lancia - flecked with Austrian mud and snow, "but the car is good in rain, it's good, when it slides I am saving it, it did not look the same for BMW, there were more fishtails than on my trawler back home!"
"This was actually the best and closest fighting you're likely to see from me this season, since the Lexus seemed to have caster wheels on. Interesting strategy call from them. Next back to Japan where the factory will really hope for a good home showing."
"I'm not so sure, because the track is a bit of a bastard, and a long way from any bars, but the team assure me they'll have my rider of Asahi and Sake ready. Can you get rollmop herring in Japan?"
I was going to ask him about the technical program and his thoughts on the number of buttons on the wheel, but before I could, his Delta's turbo four was bouncing its song of the Styrian mountains as he made for the airport with the haste of a man who really doesn't like Austria.
