Well, in that case it's a bit more difficult. You can't send small amounts of phalanx: since they're too weak in attack, some of them will die, and you need around 12 or 14 phalanx minimum to avoid casualties. (run tests in the combat sims...)

Go for swordfighters as soon as you can, they're much better for farming.

Yeah I just checked and if I raid with less than 11 Phalanx I lose atleast one even if they have no units. Which is retarded.

Also be careful with very small villages and phalanx, they seem to have some defense bonus and even with 11 phalanx you can still lose troops in some cases (it gets worst when you're bigger and the farm is smaller).

I've started attacking active targets. Have two pathfinders right now, and I'm simply avoiding those in alliances, as I don't want to have to deal with large numbers of people.

Found some nice sources for income. One guy has over 1000 of each resource, and no troops there...

So, all you seasoned veterans out there, when (population- and production-wise) is a good time to start building an army?

I want to start raiding some of the inactives around me.

I'm currently at a population of 65 with 36/36/36/13 production

I'm Gaul as well in .com. I tried raiding with phalanxes at the beginning, but as was said above, you need more than 10 to come back in 1 piece even from a tiny village. If you encounter any enemy army, your phalanx will go down the drain very quickly. I stopped and developed swordfighters, they are actually quite good infantry, they manage to kill enemy units and bring some stuff back home. I used mixed army of phalanx and swordfighters.
And then I used mix of both with less than moderate success, mainly because I don't have many farms around, and I do have quite a few powerful Teuton players, so they clean out whatever there is. Also, they do not carry too much [phalanx 30, swords 45].
Everything will change when you develop Teutates Thunder. With speed of 19 you will start farming long range, and they also carry 75 units, so are pretty good. And attack 90 is more than enough to go through most defenses, use pathfinders before anyway, because Thunders are a bit expensive units to build, you don't really want to lose them. Remeber that when going offline for a long time, Thunders suck big time in defence, never leave them in position of being defenders. They die quickly. Station them at friend's or something.

As a general rule of when to start building an army I've invented this one for myself: when you production per hour covers/exceeds building cost of 1 unit, you can start building an army. Mind that this requires patience, but as a Gaul, you probably realised already that patience is a much needed virtue to play this tribe :). Gauls are least suited tribe for farming in early stages of the game, I made most of my profit on trading, and only now, after building my cavalry army, I farm with success.

That's how i played it, and I'm satisfied with my performance. Good luck :)

So, how many swordfighters do you need to send to not lose any against empty villages. And, how much of a bonus will a wall given to a defending Roman - a level one wall.

I'm getting agressive, and I want to shut down some of the guys that are trying to farm around me. So that I have considerably more income via farms.

I'm mostly using trading to level off resources... or to keep them at the average spending rate, since I tend to go through clay failrly fast.

I'm playing Gaul in a fairly aggressive fashion it seems though. I'll have a stables at level 3 sometime tomorrow. And can start production of Thunders in the day after that probably.

When I am online right now, my resources per hour are at least a couple of hundred - per resource type - if not 500+, simlply from farms, and I only have a population of 125 or so. And my cranny protects my resources when I am out, as it more than covers what I normally have sitting around.

You need at least 3 swordfighters, but more is better.
I'm currently raiding with 10 phalanxes and 20 swordfighters

What is the point of upgrading the Rally Point? Are there any specific bonuses or anything?

Upgrade your Rally Point after you have Seige Weapons. That lets you target specific buildings, except for the Cranny.

Is it legal to sell reources at really low prices such as 500 of something for 1 of another?

If the player is bigger than you, that might be considered as pushing if caught by the admin... so you could only do that with smaller players. Just send the ressources though, this way it'll keep the recipient's merchants free.

i raided this village near me (powermad he is in the T-A alliance) his leader sent me this message afterwards. i thought yall might enjoy it. jpm and chris did.

it reads from bottom to top because i copied it from my igm folder.

HAHAHA! Nice one!

The TA alliance is centered right around me. So I might start having fun with them once I get my army together.

edit:

Oh wow .. As soon as I got my army together I was gonna raid Bloodshot, Sinath, and CHendriks, then I checked the map and CHendriks is a member of GTP-R, :ouch: . That would have been bad...

Found a cluster of 4 people in the area of -6/-20 that are just the right size for raiding. 2 of them are in alliances, but small ones (and not allied to Paragon). Even better, there's no huge towns in the immediate area (on screen when centered). Only problem being they are 2 and a 1/2 hours away using Druidriders and Theutates Thunder. Oh well. Looks perfect otherwise, though.

Edit - Hey, and Heretic is close by, too.

The game will not allow you to put sales offer if its more than 1:2

Quick user guide to catapults:
Someone asked few pages back how do you use catapults to target buildings. I think it was Famine. Anyway, when you attack someone with catapults, you have to choose attack, not raid option. And on second screen, the one where you have to click second time to send the attack, you will have a drop down menu with buildings you can destroy. Option depend on lvl of your rally point, cranny cannot be destroyed.

Ugh, grandmacougar is having problems with an alliance crying about getting raided a few times. I don't know where this idea that active players shouldn't be raided comes from out there, but it's getting old very very very fast.

Why is it that I'm in an area where I'm virtually surrounded with people from CB?

Oh well, I should at least be thankful that none of them use me as a farm! Especially witti; that guy just set his 4th village up!

I'd just say too bad and suck it up. If you can't run with the big dogs stay on the porch.

But it's so much fun attacking you. And you provide so many resources for me.

Thank you.

Please stop attacks on me, now Im in an alliance, so leave me alone. I won't retal if you stop immediately.

This guy just joined an alliance with one other guy (who I'm also farming), and they both have sub-100 population.

Unless they've built up enormous armies since I last attacked them, I don't think so.

I just sent my entire army at the guy just because he asked me to stop.

Maybe they are the sorts of players with huge armies and low populations? :dunce:
If that were the case they would have more than likely retaliated earlier I would think. And when you raid you get to see what type of army they have.

@Klos

Good job. Destroy the whiney b*tch.
