So, all you seasoned veterans out there, when (population- and production-wise) is a good time to start building an army?
I want to start raiding some of the inactives around me.
I'm currently at a population of 65 with 36/36/36/13 production
I'm Gaul as well in .com. I tried raiding with phalanxes at the beginning, but as was said above, you need more than 10 to come back in 1 piece even from a tiny village. If you encounter any enemy army, your phalanx will go down the drain very quickly. I stopped and developed swordfighters, they are actually quite good infantry, they manage to kill enemy units and bring some stuff back home. I used mixed army of phalanx and swordfighters.
And then I used mix of both with less than moderate success, mainly because I don't have many farms around, and I do have quite a few powerful Teuton players, so they clean out whatever there is. Also, they do not carry too much [phalanx 30, swords 45].
Everything will change when you develop Teutates Thunder. With speed of 19 you will start farming long range, and they also carry 75 units, so are pretty good. And attack 90 is more than enough to go through most defenses, use pathfinders before anyway, because Thunders are a bit expensive units to build, you don't really want to lose them. Remeber that when going offline for a long time, Thunders suck big time in defence, never leave them in position of being defenders. They die quickly. Station them at friend's or something.
As a general rule of when to start building an army I've invented this one for myself: when you production per hour covers/exceeds building cost of 1 unit, you can start building an army. Mind that this requires patience, but as a Gaul, you probably realised already that patience is a much needed virtue to play this tribe

. Gauls are least suited tribe for farming in early stages of the game, I made most of my profit on trading, and only now, after building my cavalry army, I farm with success.
That's how i played it, and I'm satisfied with my performance. Good luck
