By the way why didn't Wenger use Cech? Weird call...
Arsene wanted Ospina to play to help increase his game time and development. As Cech is most likely going to start in all league games and basically all our backup goalkeepers are out on loans so it is finding the balance between Ospina and Cech.

Unlucky for Bayer as they were so close to winning. But Barca took every opportunity of their dodgy defending.

Roma were all over BATE in the second half and unlucky to grab a point.

Premier League are definitely going to lose the fourth place CL spot next season the way things are going, a shocking start....City and United to come tomorrow though....

Unlikely, the only country that can challenge England is Italy, and that would probably take Juve getting to the final again.

Well England are ranked 2nd in UEFA club association coefficients so we probably won't be losing the 4th place soon.

3rd* and if England have another crap season in Europe I could really see Italy closing that gap.

I really, really don't know how England have kept their four CL places over the last few years. There was that period 2005-2009 when English teams were on fire in Europe, with an English team reaching the final five seasons in a row (winning two) with the 2008 final being between two English teams.

Since then? Nose dive. Absolute rubbish. How long has it been since an English team reached the semis? It's reflected in England's stagnating world rankings; not their UEFA coefficient yet but it ought to.

It's also disappointing to see the Belgian league ranked ahead of the Dutch league. By a sizeable margin, relatively speaking.

Chelsea, in 13/14.

Thanks for that. It feels much longer though, with that being an exception rather than the norm these days.

I'm not gonna be too worried unless the Manchester teams cock it up though.

They already have; United missed out on a season of CL football and City are crap in Europe. Doubly so if Silva and Kompany stay injured.

Between Europa League and Champions League, Roma, Lazio and Fiorentina have got 1 point out of 4 games, which is no where near enough to overhaul England. They will need Juve for another long run if current form stays true.

Deservedly so as well. I don't care if its not taking the tournament seriously or simply not being good enough if the BPL can't rise to the occasion they shouldn't have the spots. Simple.

I believe its the latter for what its worth, I have seen nothing from English teams the past few season which suggest they are far and away better than most other countries.

@Liquid the reason we still have our four teams in Europe is because UEFA give out the places in five year cycles, the current cycle comes to an end at the end of next season so if our teams are crap this season and next and the Italians have a blinder then we lose our fourth place to Italy Serie A from 2017/18..

Moenchengladbach v Man City and United v Wolfsburg tonight.

The whole 4 teams, and in this case for Spain !!!!!5!!!!! teams this year, in the league is laughable, ridiculous and needs to be shot down ASAP.

Sevilla is the fifth team and got in for winning the Europa League last year which is now the prize for winning the competition..

I am not arguing about the price. I find it despicable that there are now 5 teams from Spain in a league that calls itself the Champions league.

My idea.

Champions league and Europa League winners are in.
League winners are in.
Runner up goes to preliminary.

So that if you're really lucky you have a maximum of 3 teams in the CL. This will also greatly improve the amount of watchable matches in the EL.

What's "Champion" about being losers (2nd), the loser of losers (3rd) or "OMG, you're really clutching at straws" (4th)?

Part of me quite wants these big clubs to break away and have a European Super League. Let them have their silly boys' rich club and leave the domestic scene to the rest of us without teams sacrificing winning a trophy for finishing 4th in the league.

Oh, and I hate seeding too. Absolutely hate it.

They who screwed over Man U last game, are now 2-0 behind against CSKA. 20 minutes in to the game.

Like a fresh start.

But how are Manchester United ranked above CSKA at this point in time? They haven't played each other so there's no head-to-head and their goals for and against are identical.

PSV Eindhoven 3pts +/-0 4/4
Manchester United 3pts +/-0 3/3
CSKA Moscow 3pts +/-0 3/3
Wolfsburg 3pts +/-0 2/2

If anything, Moscow scored three goals when winning so that should count for more.

Much better night for English teams as City and United both have hard fought 2-1 victories against German teams, that Mata flick for the Smaliing winner in the United game was pure filth!

Ronaldo scored against Malmo means he now has 500 career goals..

Ronaldo also matched Raul's record of 323 goals for Real Madrid but he's done it in 433 games less...

Ronaldo: 323 in 308
Raul: 323 in 741.

Another dire performance from Man Utd.
It's getting harder and harder to defend van Gaal for picking Wayne Rooney. He's offered less than nothing to the team tonight, as has been the case for most of the season.

He looks finished.

It's a shame but I have to agree. He doesn't do anything. Lackluster end to last season and a poor start to this one. Offload him to Madrid or someone like PSG, maybe even some USA team in the summer for 30 odd million. Save us 300,000 a week too.

I would be sensible and wait until maybe the last six-eight months of his current contract before deciding anything and making knee-jerk decisions

Better night for English clubs, Manchester seems to have saved the FA's bacon regarding that 4th spot. But man I don't know what's wrong with Aguero this season. Last season he would've buried those chances. Hart was impressive (although it was a poor Gladbach penalty to be honest), and he should've been credited with an assist had Aguero not wasted it. He made no mistake from the spot, but we should've won that at least 3-1. Maybe he should do a Valencia and switch back to the number 16. :P

Three more years of this?

And it's not knee jerk:
I've watched every minute United have played this season, including the pre-season tour.
I've patiently waited for Rooney to show any sign of improvement and it is my opinion that he's regressed in that space of time. He looks drunk most of the time. Mentally absent and physically knackered.

He stands in the way of young talented player that might do a Pogba and leave if this continues.

How you can watch this player week in week out and call it knee jerk is beyond me.

At the very least he needs to be rested/rotated.

"My captain shall always play" is becoming a major problem for the club.

I agree with most of that but I fail to see how he stands in the way of Martial when they have played together in recent weeks..

There is a fatigue problem with the squad right now as today was the first day off they have had in over two weeks but LVG has acknowledged this and is getting a fatigue specialist to monitor the players.
