Ugly But Appealing Vehicles

At first, this car did not appeal to me. It's strange because I found the car a little bit ugly when it first came out (coming from a Porsche addict). Within the past couple of the years the car has become more appealing to me, and after seeing many on the road, I became intrigued by it. I wouldn't classify this car as ugly, but It does take some time for it to grow towards your taste.

I can agree on the Panamera, when it first came out I hated the way it looked. But over time it grew on me and now...I've become oddly obsessed with it. :scared:

Best one for me is when it's in white with these wheels:

Since this thread's been revived, I can't remember if anyone posted this. But the RA40 Toyota Celica isn't that much of a looker, but I like it plenty. :D

You know, you're absolutly right. I adore Porshe - I love their work (or lack of).

I love Porsche as well. The only car that I'm not too interested in is the Boxster. I'm not saying it's ugly, the car never really grabbed my attention. It's almost like it's the "poor man's Porsche." I like the Cayman much more than the Boxster

Yeah, not the first time I've heard it is the "poor man's Porshe." ;)
That reminds me - I also love the Cayenne. Dat interior.

Also, Medigo, what car is that in your avatar? Always wondered...

I have mixed emotions about this car. It's large and boxy shape never really grabbed my attention. I find this car to be some what ugly but appealing at the same time. It's hard to explain, you guys might not understand my logic.

Really wanted an Impala SS when I was looking for a cheap car to drive. (Before being handed down a beige Honda Accord...) They look sinister!

Well, it would be my 1971 Toyota Crown project car. ;) And I suppose this could count as an ugly but appealing car. Since in it's day (at least in the US) it sold poorly due to it's looks since it was "too" futuristic.

This thread's for ugly cars, not shoes.

In the past few months, I've started to be weirdly interested in the Camry, a car I used to hate. Of course Eminembeastfan played a factor in this, making me realize the untapped potential of these things, but still, I actually wouldn't mind having one. It's not particularly interesting inside or out, but the design's aged well and cleaner examples still look nice. The interior's well put together, the seats are reasonably comfortable and from what I recall the ride was good. It felt peppy under my dad's right foot when I rode in it once, and he has a driving style that makes almost anything seem slow.

If it's been fixed under the sludge recalls it'll last forever. I could only imagine the steering is lifeless and unresponsive, but that doesn't bother me much. The throttle is probably somewhat responsive, but all the Camries (each generation from 1995-2008) I've ridden in feel peppy. The brakes are probably sloppy and hard to be accurate with, but I'm sure it's still a comfortable car to drive. I don't know why I like it, it's boring, it's not fast, it doesn't handle well, there are other cars with better gas mileage, there are more practical cars, the Camry is just average, apart from refinement and reliability. As something to drive and not care about and occasionally hoon in, the Camry seems like a good car for it.

*BMW M Coupe*

I honestly don't think that's ugly at all.

The M Coupe's looks tends to be pretty polarizing; people either love it or hate it. Either way, I think it still looks better than the roadster version.

And yes, I would still have one. With an S54, please.

*Toyota Camry*

I totally understand the point of a Camry. It's relatively comfortable, quiet and refined transportation. Like you said, it's not fun, but sometimes, when you're stuck in traffic doing 5 mph, fun isn't necessarily the highest priority. However, I wouldn't call that generation of Camry ugly though. Like the rest of the car, it's just bland and unoffensive.

1979 LuAZ 969M. A Ukrainian lightweight 4x4 utility vehicle powered by 40hp air-cooled V4 engine. Kinda like Citroen Mehari, but even smaller.

It looks ugly, but it's still nice. :) 969M had a few nicknames, the most common are "Volyn" (after the Volyn region where the LuAZ plant was located) and "Lunokhod" ("Moonwalker").
The off-road capabilities are excellent. Despite of low engine power, it can go where most big SUVs get stuck, as it's pretty light for a jeep (curb weight is 960 kg).
The original 969M was produced until 1992, when an updated version appeared - LuAZ 1302 with a water-cooled 52hp engine, production of which was discontinued in 2002 (!).

An almost perfect car for such activities like fishing, hunting or just field trips with friends. :)

It's ugly, and isn't appealing. :sly:

I think Ferrari is... over praised? ...

I actually agree. Ferrari as a brand is lack-lustre. Sure they might make good cars, but they're hardly the pinnacle of road or race cars...

That Ukranian Kei-Truck is the most awesome thing ever. It has enough front angle of attack to take on a canyon. I want that to drive to the mall.

I think LaFerrari looks good compared to 458 Italia. This is what ugly IMO.

Kei-Truck :D Well, it costs $ 1.000-4.000 depending on condtition (1k is bad but driveable), but I don't suppose how much the shipping would take. And you'll have to maintain that thing, it'll probably need a lot of spare parts  An engine swap could be a good decision...

Anyway, I don't care what Top Gear says. It may drive awful, but those looks...

My mum had one of those. The Marina TC coupé is a perfectly respectable retro GT. :D

The R35 is dog rough.

I will always prefer the R33 or R34 (just) to the R35. However, it does possess a huge presence in the flesh which you don't get from many cars, including some so-called super cars.

My favourite Skyline is the R32. It's so menacing.

But it's not worthy of this thread because it is both beautiful and appealing.

the RA40 Toyota Celica isn't that much of a looker

I'd disagree on that. It's quite nicely proportioned, the details aren't bad - at the very worst you could describe it as bland (and I wouldn't even go that far) but it certainly isn't ugly.

Here's one that some may consider ugly - not checked through to see if it's already been suggested:

Odd proportions: Check
Weird details: Check
Huge panel gaps: Check
Gormless expression: Check

And yet... it's based on a Mini, so we know it'll handle well. It was made of fiberglass so the body doesn't rust like a normal Mini. It's light, very nimble, and totally driver-focused. It has motorsport pedigree, at Le Mans. It's cheap to fix, because it's all Mini mechanicals. Appealing as a result? Certainly.
