Ugly But Appealing Vehicles

The Lancia is ugly... For a Lancia.

But for a hatchback, well, look at it this way; the Lancia or a Subaru Impreza hatchback? Both the same idea, but one is a triumph of design... And it's not the Subaru.

I have loved the Ford Excursion for as long as I remember. It weighs 7230 lbs, about the same as three NA Miatas. It is 226.6 inches long, more than two Smart Fortwos put together. Its wheelbase is longer than a Toyota Aygo. It gets about 10 miles per gallon, and has a 44 gallon fuel tank. It is about three inches taller than I am. It is so huge that they had to engineer a blocker beam in the front end to prevent it from going over a smaller car in a crash. It is the definition of politically incorrect, and I have no legitimate reason to own one, but I want one. It is frowned upon by everyone I know in real life, and I have yet to meet more than five car enthusiasts that don't hate it, but to me that offensiveness is just a part of the appeal. It is the most unapologetic vehicle I have ever seen. My personal pick would be a black one with black steelies and a 6.8 liter V10.

You've worded that better than I could, and I agree entirely.👍

Largest thing I've ever driven was an Expedition, but luckily here in this part of Maryland my love of massive, impractical trucks/suvs doesn't have to be a guilty one. :D

@Doog

I love the Excursion. Theres no point to them other than hauling a lot of people but it does that pretty well haha.

Large SUVs are kind of a guilty pleasure of mine, for all the reasons that you stated, and Excursions are about as big as they come. I've never driven an Excursion before, but I've driven a few different Suburbans over 3 generations, and I imagine them to be pretty similar. Although they feel (and are) really big, you get used to it pretty quickly, and it's nice sitting way high up looking down on everything else on the road. They are comfy, feel high centered, have lifeless steering, scary to drive quickly down a mountain, difficult to parallel park in a city, gas guzzling, and I'll love to own one some day.

I've ridden in a couple big SUVs (1 Suburban, 1 Expedition, 1st & 2nd gen Sequoia) and you're right, they are comfy, especially the Expedition (legroom!) and the 2nd generation Sequoia, which is easily one of the most comfortable vehicles I've experienced. High enough that you see over everything, but also very quiet and soft on the highway. Combine that with leather, heated seats and a vast interior and it's incredibly pleasant. Seeing as there are zero instances where you need to parallel park where I live, combined with a grid full of straight, wide roads, a huge vehicle isn't much of a hassle, unless you have a stupidly cramped garage like mine. That Ford badge on the front guarantees that desirable examples have depreciated to very affordable levels, which might just balance out the cost of fueling it up for a week. Sounds alright to me.

Bristol 450. Especially radical-looking in its coupe guise, but with a rather comical Frogeye-esque front end.

However, the front end looked far uglier on the earliest version prior to the revised design in '53.

The first version definitely was. Unless you were looking at it from behind, in which case you get an eyeful of those funky-looking rear fins.

As far as appeal goes, I'd say the more streamlined Frogeye version is endearing in a way, but it's not a looker either.

Well that would definitely turn heads at a car show or on the street (not that it's street legal )

Haha, I think it's cute. <3
I want to hug it and it being my best friend. :D
Wow, really? I'll stick to my Herbie, thanks.

A lot of people call pretty much all Beetles ugly. I don't like those people (sorry mom).

I also agree on the C6, they are not ugly, their lines are mostly unusual, but far faaaar from ugly. The wheels do wonders too.

Insanity! The C6 is appealing because it's stunning.

This. A metric tonne of this.

I've no doubt this has been posted multiple times, but any excuse to post it again.

Panel gaps you could live in and just generally a bit messy. But good lord above how, much I want to drive one.

Whoa, awesome car! I had never seen it. Very cool. Le Mans entry I suppose?

For Le Mans only, yes. Failed to finish in its first race in 1953, and won in its class in '54 and '55. All 3 cars came 7th, 8th and 9th overall in both years.

And the C6 is a wonderful-looking thing. They went for a quirky design on a large executive car and it worked. It's just a shame I've never see many around here.

A couple of the the favorite cars I've owned aren't exactly the most beautiful, or at least have a lot of detractors.

A '76 Plymouth Gran Fury (mine was a white ex-police car):

And a 2012 Mazda 3 (mine's black, so the smile isn't quite as pronounced).

That Mazda 3 front end reminds me of this..
