Do we need a story?

Like seriously, the amount of time spent for a story to be connected into the game is nearly half the work.
(maybe i'm completely wrong, but)

Nothing wrong with a story, especially when you aren't looking to compete against an overly agressive human opponent. Even if it were just a run of stand alone missions and daily objectives and no actual story, it is still nice to get away from the possible bloodbath of random jerks making your stay hell imo.
 
Yes, it needs a story. Again, this is more than anything because NFS needs to distinguish itself from a crowded genre. NFS needs to do what it does best and then do it better. Having a cheesy story is an NFS franchise staple and shouldn't go away. Racing and customization should be the main focus, but they shouldn't eliminate the story factor.
 
A story? Maybe make it simple and not complex and it needs to attract our attention. In Most Wanted the game did a good job of making us hate Razor up until he's arrested because he cheated to win and get your M3. On Carbon they made us hate Darius because he's the one started all of this mess from Underground 1 to Carbon. Had he not stole the prize money from winning that race against the crew leaders then you would have never left Palmont City and the whole Underground story would have not started.
 
There's many demands for this game that we know little about, naturally. Does it need a story? I have no clue. Would it work without one? NFS:HP2 back on PS2 did it...but could it work today? Again I got no clue, it depends how talented the team is behind the making of the game...can they capture an audience? Do they know their audience?

All I ask, having played extensively NFS2015...please, get a solid handling model. No bugs, no fuss. A good handling model that's predictable(bug and glitch free), but realistic enough to be labeled NEED FOR SPEED. And fun to drive. Not too much to ask if you think about it. We're not asking for BeamNG levels of damage on console(10 years developing that), but a NFS worthy, bug-free handling. NFS2015 was crap solely because of the handling, it had all the customisation in the world, but that couldn't save it from being a HORRIBLE experience to drive.

So, please devs of new NFS game...learn from your mistakes, then impress us with all the customisation!

The thing is, there's a certain perverse enjoyment I get out of the 'story' (I refuse to even call it one) considering it feels very much like a terribly written FMV game you get on the Sega CD from the 90's. And you can tell the actors they got were more then happy hamming it up.

It's like the old John Carmack quote:
"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

Especially for racing games, unless the game really demands it, you don't need a story. None.

Just ask those die-hard sim iracing folks, if their game is lacking in "story" bahahahahaha

I do suppose I enjoy the tacky stories of NFS games, it adds something more rememberable than just racing but it may hamper the series more than we could possibly imagine.

That said, I found NFS2015's cutscenes to be more of a bore than say MW2005. Think it was the shallowness of it all. Didn't feel gritty enough, just shallow and aloof. Hard to like.

Yeah, I enjoy a hammy story in racing as well, but racing games are probably one of the few games where that Carmack quote is very much true. But if they're going to double down on the (admittedly, enjoyable, but still terrible) story, then I'll probably drop out.

Reminds me of some bad films, they're so bad it's entertaining!

So long as the game is still turns out driveable and fun to play, I'm not too fussed about overdone cutscences.
 
^^^ I think you guys are spot on. To add a thought: When it comes to having a story in a racing game, I feel like it depends on the setting for the game. If a game is completely track-focused, then I don't feel that a story adds much, if anything. But for a street setting I feel like it belongs. That is the genre that I very much prefer, hence the reason why I also prefer that a story is in place. I like the street racing genre best because I can drive cars that I fantasize about driving IRL, and they don't have to be completely track-focused, crazy aerodynamic panels hanging off machines, which I don't find nearly as attractive. Something about the idea of only seeing your car if you're racing on a track is boring to me and I lose interest quickly.

All that being said, Prostreet is still to this date my favorite NFS game. I feel that it was a perfect blend of story, racing, and customization. The story was almost non-existent but enough to make you feel immersed in the world. Even though it was track-focused, it maintained the street racing atmosphere. The race day event screens made you feel a part of the world even when you aren't actually on a track. I wish they would do a follow-up to Prostreet.

That isn't really much to be excited on. And they're going to have to do a lot more in order to repair fan relations with regards to how much of a joke NFS 2015 is.
As for me, just fix the physics then its a done deal.
 
They are extremely vague to their consumer base, but I don't know if it'll pan out well for them in this release.
 
I don't find anything really exciting out of their vague post, but I found this interesting...

you’re going to want a world that not only looks beautiful, but offers you the space in which to do the things you want. We’re dialing up the action and allowing you to tear up the tarmac, and dirt, to your heart's content.

I wonder how much off-roading we'll be able to do.
 
Then you should go with GT series.

NFS has always and always will be arcade like.
NFS2015's handling was bad. Very bad. At least Most Wanted and Carbon's handling model is ok. But 2015? Okay I may have gotten used to it but definitely don't want to experience it again in the 2017 title.

@Ameer67 Thanks for backing me up. Should we start making a NFS2017 main thread just like 2015?

Also I just saw something in the article that says Rhinos. Rhino SUVs?

When you consider the features highlighted in the article (increased customisation focus, Rhinos and varied environments in particular) NFS 2017 does sound rather promising. But obviously gameplay is the deciding factor on whether the game is any good or not, Ghost Games need to show they have reworked the physics before I commit to anything.

Let's just wait for EA Play. We'll see if they did reworked the physics. June is almost here anyway. We're probably gonna get a teaser by late May and then we'll see a gameplay of NFS2017 at EA Play.
 
If the handling model is nowhere near the trash that was NFS2015, I'm in. So happy to hear that they ditched the always-online they so desperately tried to justify last time. Looking forward to see some gameplay.
