Video game pet peeves.

In ANY competitive collectable game, when people use a hate card/Pokemon/item/car.

A hate ---- is something (mostly stuff whose stats or effect only focus on stuff that is very specific) that is normally useless to your play style or your main strategy but you add it in to your ---- anyway when you are about to face off against specific playstyles.

This doesn't show off any skill at all if the only reason that you one was because you knew what your opponent was using so you added in stuff that is highly specific in terms of usage and can't help you in any other match.

Worst case in Yugioh (both Online and paper) is Buster Blader, seriously, until it finally got support like Buster Dragon that make opponent monsters dragons, you'd only use Buster Blader against a deck that relies on dragons against everything else it was usless or anyone who uses Pendulum Trap Hole, no Pendulum decks are meta right now in the TCG, why bother having it in your Main Deck just because you hate Pendulum Summoning.

Large updates

I am sure I am not alone on this one either. I was about to play Call of Duty Black Ops III the other day and was looking forward to playing some zombies, then look at a few things in theater mode afterwards. Then they decide to slam me with a 1GB+ update and I of course could not use theater mode since the game was not updated to the latest version. Not the first time I have had this problem and it certainly won't be the last.

It also made a comeback in Call of Duty Black Ops II and Call of Duty Black Ops III in zombies for me. In Black Ops II, since it is easy to die quickly in zombies, this is made worse than before. If I get killed in the early rounds somehow, I have to sit through the game over screen and wait for it to go back to the menus only for it to load again. Which like GT2, it gets annoying after constantly losing. It's even worse in Black Ops III since you have all that again from Black Ops II and the load times after losing are even longer having to wait through the forest screen for the menus to load just to play again
I would like to add that Black Ops III has a restart option, but it's only when you're not connected to PSN. If you are connected to PSN, it doesn't matter which mode you are on or if you are playing alone, it doesn't let you restart. WHY?!

No kidding, @Sonygamer455... I've got 15.5 GB worth of Black Ops 3 updates that've piled up.
Dang. Ironically I could have sworn it said 15GB for me the other day, but then I looked again and it was about 1GB. Must have been a glitch.

I forgot to mention it takes up hard drive space, which can be a huge problem if you are short on space.

Large updates do my head in. If a game takes up loads of storage, then i`ll just avoid buying it as i only have a 1TB hard drive. Hence why i`m not buying Infinite Warfare, or i`ll just buy it when it goes down in price. The largest game i ever installed was Halo 4 at around 80GB? Could be more, but as soon as i finished the game it had no other use to me. I wish that games nowadays, we could just play them straight away like we could on the good ol` PS1 & PS2. Not a fan of unfinished games, large updates & installations, DLC, Online Only games. You can only fit around 7/8 games on a 1TB Xbox One depending on the file sizes. & I know that it`s too for the textures & so it runs better or what have you. & Whereas on the PS1, 2 & 3 i have around 20-50 games for each console that i can play. I`m too old skool for this movement of gaming in this day & age. But that`s just me & my opinion.

What the hell are they putting in the games that takes up that much space?

Code. You'd be surprised at how complex code can get - to do something as simple as describe a text box and use that input to calculate a result can easily run into the 1,000s of lines of code - even when cleaned up.

And just like that, I feel even more sorry for people that work with code.

Even so, it seems like memory usage has become almost exponential from one generation to the next, and we've hit the obsurd point on that curve. I'd bet that all the games in my house would fit on a 1TB drive, and 7/8 new games caps it? Maybe it's just me not knowing anything about coding, but it just seems ridiculous.

Modern video game music. Something about it just doesn't excite me anymore, even FH3's. I have a fairly broad taste in music (particularly heavy metal), and for the most part only a couple songs on Epitaph really get me going.

Sadly, it's the same for most video games nowadays. Gaming music just seems to have lost... something in the past few years.

I hear DOOM's soundtrack is good. It's all thrash or heavy metal...can't tell.

Think about how increasingly complex the game mechanics and interactions have gotten. I bet you a huge chunk of any modern game code is game physics and object interaction.

A significant chunk of it is raw content -- like uncompressed audio for maximum quality, and unpacked assets to speed up loading them from the HDD into memory. I feel some devs take an abundance of HDD space for granted these days.

Personally, I don't consider a licensed soundtrack to be videogame music, but a playlist of existing songs. The Horizon series has had some good picks, but like most other soundtracks of its type, it wears itself out before long.

I've always favored "oldschool" videogame soundtracks, with memorable themes and engaging rhythms. I don't care as much for hushed ambience (unless the mood of a game calls for it), forgettable generic orchestral music, or Hollywood-style bombastic percussion or string-ensemble spasms. I like leitmotifs, chiptunes, and battle music that makes you want to rock to the beat and sing along while you kick ass.

Indie games frequently aim for what I want, with the execution merely depending on the composer. I can't complain there, and I'm pleased chiptunes are as popular as they are. Nintendo has also been totally on-point with the band music they've been doing lately for their in-house games like Mario Kart 8. Delicious stuff, and a welcome evolution from their MIDI themes.

I agree with @Wolfe's stance on music not being videogame music if it's merely licensed music. But of course that's not a bad thing... Licensed soundtracks have introduced me to some great songs and bands over the years. Of course not every track's gonna be a winner, and entire licensed soundtracks can very easily not contain any songs that you personally find appealing.

And regarding original videogame soundtracks, well...

Too many garbage Sweetfx/Reshade presets. (PC)

Modding is fun but very tedious and sometimes complicated. (PC)

Game Reveal/Demo- The dude that's playing the demo is trying too hard to make the game "cinematic" by using very low mouse/joystick sensitivity when looking around. And add to that, the very low FOV setting they using makes me nauseous.

Retail Exclusives

Can we please stop this crap? I was fine with Pre-order bonuses just being Pre-Order bonuses, but now its just gotten out of hand. Now sure we can blame companies for this (Including Gamestop since they started it), but we also need to blame the people that keep buying these because all they are doing is telling the companies to keep doing it.

The whole trend of putting "Day One Edition" on the box.

It's cheesy, no one cares, it makes the box art worse, and getting your hands on a new copy of "Day One" editions for cheap on Day 365 usually isn't too difficult.
I'm fairly sure I've seen the Day One Edition of the XBOX One on sale (new ones) to this day. The damn thing was released almost three years ago.

Reminds me of a time when I bought the digital version of GT6 since my disc was giving me issues. If I remember correctly, I had the updates for the disc version, but I still had to redownload them on digital. I was mad when I found out about that.

What if they have they have unique edits of licensed songs for a game?

Overpriced items.

I am referring to in game currency of course and the term "items" can be just about anything. I have seen my fair share of things that I find overpriced in video games, but here are the most ridiculous ones to me:

Call of Duty Zombies: Pack A Punch Machine, Mule Kick, Speed Cola, Galva Knuckles and I am sure I missed some. I find them all to be overpriced. Pack A Punch should be like 3000 points because 5000 is just too much to me and some guns aren't even worth that much trouble. For Mule Kick, I don't even know where Treyarch came to the conclusion 4000 points is sufficient for it. I just don't think it does enough to warrant such a cost and I would be better off saving it up for something else most of the time. Speed Cola is quite handy, but the cost is the reason I am hesitant about getting it. I like faster reloads, but 3000 points for that is just overkill.

GT5 and 6: Oh yes, the Lamborghini Miura and all those other vintage cars like the Jaguar XJ13 for example. I still cannot justify how 15,000,000 is acceptable for the Miura apart from it being a classic, which even then is too much to me. Same could be said for the 20,000,000 vintage race cars. They are all pretty good for the races they can compete in, but you could go and buy something much cheaper than them that does even better. (Like the 2J for example) Maybe I lack knowledge about the car's history, but I just can't see why they have to be so expensive.

And of course, let's not forget the 100,000 price tag for nitrous in GT6. For no more than what it does, it's not worth the cost. Why couldn't it be 5000 like it was in GT4?!

Like Snoop Dogg's Riders on the Storm for NFSU2? Sure.
That's funny. Just seconds before I read your post, I thought about that song. Let's not forget the song "I need Speed" by Capone, that was done specifically for the game if I remember correctly.

I'm surprised you didn't mention just about everything in GTA Online.

That's because I don't play GTA. At least not yet. (Yea I am one of the few)
I stopped playing it for the most part. They pretty much abandoned single player and the only new content goes to GTA Online (even the new cars/weapons have gone to GTA Online exclusively since last year); where the players are toxic and every in game item is so ridiculously overpriced that grinding for some of them is virtually impossible (*cough* yacht *cough*).

I can't speak for the overpriced items, but the toxic players yes. I sometimes watch my brother play and I can agree with this despite not playing it.

I could have played it when my brother got it, but if I remember correctly, it was only a month or so before I would get my PS4 and I didn't want to get into it before getting a whole new console. Nowadays, I have some games I ain't touched in years and I have bigger intentions to finish them than I do to start on something new.

The first months of GTA Online must have been the best time to play, when the majority of players didn't have much for weapons or armored vehicles and everything. I'm glad that was when I experienced it. It was a ton of fun to just chill and goof around with friends, and it was easy to avoid being harassed by other players at that time.

When none of my friends were on, I liked playing solo, exploring, collecting and customizing stolen cars, and spotting the most valuable cars to turn in for cash to save up for things like a new a 10-car garage. To me it was like a street racing game with guns, and racing was the only thing I did with randoms. It felt like a logical and rewarding gameplay loop for something that calls itself "Grand Theft Auto", as opposed to the stuck-up-its-own-ass insipid cinematic nonsense the singleplayer game drags you through.

Leap of Faiths

Moments in platformers where you have to jump but you have no idea how far or high you have to jump.

Just creates a lot of unfair trial and error.

Not really a game issue, it's more of a PSN issue but I'm going to put it here anyway.

When I download a game from the PSN, why can't we download the updated version? Why must I download a game, then have to download an update?

My favourite was when I got "Race the Sun." I can't remember the exact size, but say it was 217mb. Once it was downloaded and installed, it needed to download an update. The size of the update? 217mb. What is the point of that?

Overpowered Bosses
Whether if they have too much health, defeat you very quickly or both, they can be so annoying.

Call of Duty Zombies
Many bosses to name, but I will only mention a few that I really can't stand.

The hounds. Prior to Black Ops III, they are not insanely overpowered, but they move pretty fast, which makes sense, but what doesn't make sense is why they have more health than an average zombie. Sure this is zombie mode, but you would think dogs would drop faster than zombies, but nope!

Panzer Soldat. I think many can agree with this. Not only does he move somewhat fast, but he has a flamethrower, jet pack and depending on the game, either a claw to grab players or cannon that fires shock charges. All those weapons and then of course plenty of health to make him overpowered and tough to kill.

George Romero. The worst one of all for the simple reason he has FAR too much health for any boss and takes way too long to kill. If the other bosses have roughly 1000 - 2500 health units, he has 250,000 for one player and the game adds another 250,000 for each player in the game. Even worse, if you defeat him, he will only disappear for maybe a round or two, and then he's back again meaning you have to start all over again....

Twisted Metal Head On

Tower Tooth, he is a pain to defeat. Powerful weapons, lots of health, fast speed, he has it all and what it makes it even worse is if you damage him, he's a huge coward that will take advantage of the health power ups if he can. Without cheats, he's quite a challenge.

I am sure I could name more....
