Really nice shot would love to see it without the burnout as it is sweet! I would suggest perhaps more smoke higher up the car as the smoke wouldn't just stay below the rear bumper and perhaps a little bit more opace.

the first few updates before the burnout ones are great. but the smoke shows, i really dont know. what i do is this:

1: duplicate the original layer
2: go to "filters"
3: click on 'Render'
4: you'll see a menu, click on 'Cloud'
5: add some motion or radial blur, depending on the angle and the way you want it to come out, it's usually trial and error for me, but all those are optional. i add motion and or radial blur coz it just gives the effect some movement and added realism, since smoke doesnt stand still coming from burning tires
6: go to 'window' and click on 'Layers'
Note: i usually choose screen, but if you want you can try out all sort of different layer types to see which one balances out the smoke effect the most. choose the most appropriate one for your shot and the levels you're gonna use. this might get a bit tricky, but no big deal. just make sure you save the file in .psd mode (if you're using photoshop cs2 or something, otherwise just save it under a different filename so u keep your original)
7: balance the opacity
8: after you're done all these, you can now adjust the levels and tone and whatever else you need to do. but be very, very careful with the brightness and contrast, as these elements can make or break the smoke effect.

I hope that guide helps you even just a little bit. i've just started doing that lately. if you see my monaro or some of my current comp entry updates with the bmw, i have some smoke effects added to some of those photos. specially the monaro update. this technique i use is based on TVR&FF's rain guide, with a few minor modifications :D hope it works out for you. if you have any questions, just let me know. goodluck

ps: always remember to coordinate the movement of your wheels (if any)
and the angle of the shot and the area needed to be covered with the effect. trust me man, it's not hard at all. trial and error is all it is. just keep practicing and you'll get it right. so now i look forward to seeing what you can come up with next time.

Thanks Jgda9rs for your very big post!(+rep for that one! Crap, must spread some first...)

here's my trial and error:

2nd for me as well. But you should try to make the clouds more real by adding different sizes and colours of them to your shot. 👍

you got the idea. now i would suggest looking at magazines and pictures of cars in real life to get a reference. pretty good job on the 2nd one though.
just keep practicing. and look for reference in the internet. it really helps :) just keep practicing, now that you already know how to do it.

Interesting work with the smoke, I am sure you will be getting great results in no time. The second one does look better, like freddy said. Change the size and colour will make it look more realistic. Also play with the opacity and blending mode might get you better results.
The car is looking sweet . 👍

Yeah...the 2nd shot its great, very good work!!!

Thanks NTX.:) I will work on that more then.:P

ok, thanks jgda9rs.:) Will do.:)
I've found some good references for real burnouts.:D

Thanks for the faith in me Drift:)

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Another one:

BMW 330i

This ride rocks!

I like how you editted the pics, and the car looks great, but i'm not digging those rims really :D love the lights and reflections though

I don't like how the smoke is done, because it looks unreal, and if someone either did some cut out job and added a transparent layer on top or just stuck something on, like some plastic from a plastic bag. However I like the preview of your next update Vince.

The shot from the BMW is really fake looking for one thing, that BMW is Rear wheel drive, and another thing if you want to make the smoke look more real curl some of the smoke around the wheels.

I'm guessing by that you mean the non smooth ones he's done....
But if you consider real photography techniques, his 2nd attempt was very very realistic. To get the wheels spun up that much would mean a slightly longer exposure than normal and that would cause the smoke to look smooth and silky, like when you overexpose water shots. However it does need to be less direct, more smoke is needed around the wheel areas because burnouts don't cause the smoke to shoot out like that. I think it looks really cool though. 👍

I'm not too keen on the other attempts though....

Thanks for stopping by TVR.:)
I'd like to notice to you that this is my first all in blurred picture(motion blur + angled wheel blur first attempt together.)
If you don't mind, could you explain the Italic text quoted above please, because I'm not following your thoughts right now...(well I could need some rest, so it also could be me feeling sleepy:P)
I know it looks unreal, I know I should do something to it, I just don't know what...
Maybe a good idea: someone who is famililar with burnouts & smoke, please make a tutorial!
My feeling tells me this picture needs smoke, is that feeling right?

Thanks for the feedback Jer, I'm really practicing at the smoke thing, so I didn't really watch the tiny details. I hope you guys don't mind.
The original idea was the BMW is at a collision course(for the collision course contest) -> it is speeding to a wall. It is braking too hard, the smoke turns up. (could you look at the smoke? Please enlarge the pic, do you notice something?)

Okay, maybe the wheel shoudn't be radial blurred then..

Thanks Moglet for your enlightening post.:)
I almost couldn't believe you liked it, you always make such good pics that make my work look like my worn off shoes I should have thrown away a long time ago...
I actually made a picture which contained a burnout with smoke around the wheel, but I found it look plain stupid...

Ps. To everyone whose interested in editing one of my Photographs: JUST DO IT!(post it in your gallery, please mention you did a remix of one of mine and post here "I've done one, go look at my gallery" when it's up though...:))
Pps. Anyone whose into my next update will have to wait, I'm going on a vacation.:D(will be back next sunday)
Sorry TVR...

Hey Vince i see you are trying the smoke effect thing. i must say good job. 👍
Here i give you the link to how i did it back in the days. This was my first months with photoshop. so don`t expect fancy pics. Use this as a refference if you want. I only used the smudge and brush tool.

In the mean time i found another way to do smoke effect but i never apply it to my GT4 pics... If i got time sometime i will try it out.

Thanks Speedster.:)

Okay guys I'm working on a new update, it's up in a min!

"Something Different"

Remember to click on them to enlarge and enjoy!

I like that third shot. Looks really nice. I'm not sure about the green taillights though. The angle in the last one is great. Never seen it like that, also cool rims you shose. 👍

The third and fourth ones are the best. Nice angles, dont know about the green taillights though.

thanks Krame for stopping by,
I just wanted to do something different, unusual, but still usual...
You get it?:P

A bit strange...but they are good. Check out my latest update if you have time...

thanks Speedster, I will check them.;)

It is, without a doubt, different. I love the framing on your shots. Especially the 2nd and last one. Not sure I would want to be driving behind the last one on a dark night though. Keep up the suave work!

Thanks Fallenan9el!
that would be a frightening experience indeed.:P

Next update:

I'm thinking about doing my next update theme based, inspired by a film based on a marvel comic figure I saw lately.

To be continued...
