Wait, what?

We're missing the goofy, nerdy chick type that everyone loves... unless they make Betsy Ross goofy...
That's not really Whedon's style. Willow Rosenberg is probably the character that started out like that, but she rapidly evolved. She was goofy and nerdy to begin with, but by the time the second season came around, she was powerful enough to re-ensoul Angelus - and given that he was probably the strongest and most dangerous vampire that had ever existed, that was no mean feat.

If anything, the female characters in THE AVENGERS will probably be a lot closer to Kaylee Frye than anything else Whedon has written. Probably with a dash of River Tam.

X-Men is definitely within Whedon's style range. The Avengers... well... you have more basic archetypes than in the X-Men... more of the old-fashioned Superhero-type than the tortured, complex character types...

At least RDJ and Thor give him scope for wisecracking... but I wonder how he'll handle Cap and the Hulk.
If there is anybody who could write THE AVENGERS and do it properly, it's Joss Whedon. He's probably the Hollywood writer who is the most deeply-enmeshed in comic book lore right now.

So, I have been watching the animated The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes on Netflix and I am really enjoying it. I really like its take on Hulk, where Banner is basically acting as his conscience to keep him in line but Hulk and Thor do not get along. Hulk is rude and Thor wishes to teach him a lesson in manners.

It is all over the place with villains as a few episodes in it has a massive breakout take place at all SHIELD prison facilities, which is what leads to the team banding together.

But for anyone looking for quick backstories for each character and a look at the traditional group of members (including Ant Man, The Wasp, and Black Panther) it is a good watch. It is far from canon, but the origins are close enough to get you up to speed.

Which is this? the Alien invasion one? Did you catch the second animated film with the Black Panther?

Or is this a new series entirely?

Oh. Not available here... yet.
Yeah, I didn't have Disney XD until recently, so I am watching the first season on Netflix.

And they have hit on basically every group of villains imaginable. The Skrull/Kree war has been noted but not in full effect yet, Masters of Evil have played a part, Hydra is active, and AIM is going strong. And to top it off Kang the Conqueror was seen early on, so I suspect he plays a role later.

If it has taught me one thing it is that you never claim to be the strongest person in front of the Hulk. It tends to result in lots of pain and Hulk saying, "Who strongest now?"

Now THAT'S spoiler-ish!

So... how does Loki fit into all of this? And who else are we going to see?

IF Thanos is in then I wonder if Death will be somewhere lurking beyond...seeing as he's quite obsessed with her.

...Dammit. Now I want them to do an interpretation of the Infinity Gems storyline

Along with all the wanton killing? Not great for a G or PG-rated movie...

Though it would be awesome to see Iron Man decapitated...

Can't always be blue skies and Dandelions.

Besides...he was doing it to impress his love interest. In that regard it'd be like Twilight (I think?) except the beings here can crap universes. :P

Like you haven't watched Captain America?

It was a movie with tons of crap blowing up, getting shot at, burned and etcetera, and you see almost no blood at all during the entire movie.

Following that, the Avengers movie SHOULD be blue skies and dandelions!

Look out for the super-special cameo by my old hometown of Spokane during the stageshow song... perhaps now I won't constantly hear outsiders refer to it as Spokan-ee.

Captain America: Teaching America's youth the proper pronunciation of the names of obscure little cities!

I will give a quick breakdown of what I know and how I think all this can come together.

Spoiler time! If you haven't seen Thor or Captain America or don't want comic stories to possibly ruin the story for you stop now. If you have seen those movies and know the comics or want to know before going into the films then continue on.

From the scene after the credits in Thor we see that Loki is now after the Cosmic Cube (or tesseract). While legend (from Captain America) tells that the cosmic cube was one of Odin's greatest treasures, it does not say where it originated from. In comic lore the Skrulls created a cube and the cube on Earth was created by AIM, later taken by Red Skull. Since we have no AIM in the movies I would hazard a guess that the cube we see is actually a lost Skrull artifact obtained by Odin during the days when Asgard interacted with Midgard/Earth as protectors. Perhaps there was even a point where Asgardians had to fight the Skrull. With the cube now being played with again (or even controlled by Loki) perhaps the Skrull notice it and return, bringing their war with the Kree with them.

Now, at Comic Con last year we saw the Infinity Gauntlet on display. With the exception of the Ultimate universe there has never been cosmic cube interaction that does not eventually lead to Thanos appearing. In fact, Thanos came for the cube to gain supreme power over the universe after Kree warrior Captain Mar-Vell agreed to help The Avengers. So, the Skrull-Kree war being introduced due to the cosmic cube is highly probable, and Thanos showing up during that is not far from comic lore.

Now, all of that is purely conjecture on my part. But it is how I see it possible for every single hint and tease we have been given to eventually tie in to the overall plot. And if a trilogy is planned then we have time and room to get all of this in.

I remember seeing that display in a few pictures...

If they decide to do something regarding the Guantlet or at the very least Thanos tearing ass even without the Guantlet...I will smile so hard I'm going to look like an idiot. Why is this in spoiler tags?

Another thing that dawned on me: the Infinity Sword. Admittedly, I don't know the story around that...but since Steve here mentions Mar Vell, I would LOVE to see that. Wonder if he'll already have the Nega Bands or just his "normal" psionic powers.

As I think about it more I have an idea how this might play out.

Assuming we get a trilogy:

1st film: Loki attempts to gain control of the cosmic cube. He uses it to give Thor a way to return to Earth, but then shuts him out and begins his plans to control the nine realms. He saves Earth for last as he wants an army of evil critters behind him when he takes on Thor. Meanwhile, SHIELD brings together The Avengers. They believe the cube is extraterrestrial in origin and believe its creators have spies on Earth. With the cube gone they suspect an attack is imminent. Whether SHIELD realizes Loki has it or suspects the aliens doesn't matter. In the end they discover that Loki has it and free the 9 realms and stop him. In a post-credits scene we see one of the team being replaced by a Skrull, or find out they have been for a while ( I will guess Captain America as he will have higher SHIELD access than any others).

2nd Film: The Avengers are warned of an impending war by an alien warrior from the Kree race (Captain Mar-Vell, but kept as a side character) who wishes to stop the violence. As the battle comes to Earth the impostor on the team steals the Cube. The Skrull race plans to use the cube to defeat the Kree and conquer Earth. But as it heats up a new party enters the fray. An alien with immense abilities, Thanos, attacks the Skrull, intent on taking the cube. All three races must join together to stop Thanos from using the cube to alter all reality. Our Kree companion sacrifices himself to stop Thanos, but Thanos survives and vows revenge soon. An uneasy peace falls between the three races as they recognize a larger threat looms and the Skrull and Kree leave. Or Thanos completely wiped one or both their races out. In a post-credits scene we see Thanos placing a gem, which he obtained while using the cube, in his gauntlet or on a stand.

3rd Movie: With help from Skrull/Kree technology we find out that Thanos is wreaking havoc across the galaxy, or he attacks Earth looking for another gem (maybe more Asgard connections here). Back to action to stop him from gathering all six gems and ruling the universe.

An alternative to this, as Iron Man 3 is being worked on, is that the second film is 100% Skrull/Kree and Iron Man 3 is post Avengers. In the comics Thanos first appeared in Iron Man seeking the Cosmic Cube. Perhaps Tony Stark is studying it as his father did and Thanos attacks to take it. Another alien appears to stop him, who later is revealed to be a Kree (Captain Mar-Vell).

Last option is that the gun is not Skrull at all, even though it really, really, really looks like it, and it is simply indicating Thanos.

Anyway, we have enough big possibilities at this point that we can have villains strong enough to be a challenge that will require a group of heroes to assemble. I am just curious to find out why SHIELD is taking an interest that is outside the Congressional attempts to claim Stark's technology.

I like that but I have an alternative...

Loki is seeking out the cube to free Thanos from some type of pocket universe-type prison and lead him as his own Destroyer not knowing Thanos bows nor takes commands from no one, but he'll play along in order to snag the cube from him. With this the Kree and Skrull war comes to Earth leaving Mar Vell (if he's introduced off the bat or at all) in much of a Captain America-like state, and the only way to re-obtain his diminished abilities would be to prevent Loki for freeing Thanos while the Avengers attend to the rampaging Skrulls. Ultimately, a partial ending (of the lead-in to the ending) could have Mar Vell being referred to as the "Protector of the Universe" and given the Nega Bands, changing his appearance to resemble more of Genis'...or better yet since this is contemporary, why not introduce Genis from the get-go? We could even have him in his Kree Navy attire with that blasted gun I despise so much for some reason.

With the Skrulls being repelled away Thanos is freed (in a post-credits scene) as his entire imprisonment was linked to the Skrulls. I'm not saying I like it (even though I do like Genis better) but it's interesting at the very least. And I just realized I've treated Thanos like General Zod.

But... but... Superman!

I don't know how wise it would be to do an entire third movie on another planet. This would necessitate a whole lot of mother-loving CGI, and look at how that worked out for Green Lantern... okay... to be fair, the CGI wasn't GL's biggest problem...

I think they can work with the story to prevent that if it seems to not work.

Anyway, here are some kinda spoilerific links I ran across yesterday with video shot from bystanders of filming and an article on footage shown at D23. I am not sure if these hurt my theories at all.

So, we clearly have Loki to deal with, and based on the footage from D23 Hulk is clearly an Avenger working with them. Although that "I have an army." "We have a Hulk." back and forth is brilliant. But we also have a scene where Thor and Cap are battling a group of people. They are in mo-cap suits, so they will be CGI, but the question is what are they? Skrull? Some group of Asgardian-mythical things? In most Asgardian storylines the beasts of legends are not all humanoid and from the actions of Cap and Thor it looks like they are fighting humanoids.

And some rumors floating around are Loki, Skrulls, and a mystery villain. If they overdo it that will suck. If I had to guess, the mystery villain will be Thanos, who likely shows up late in the film. I'm just not sure. But it definitely looks as if my trilogy theory is wrong if the rumors are close to true.

Can't wait, love the comment below on the first link though....

"dis moovie llook like s****, yoo tink they could afford a more expensivv camera. n whuh da haill was datt clikkin noise?? dah buttu not bee goinn onn duh HOLE MOVIE'"

Some people... Seems like their IQ barely surpasses their age!

On the topic of the Avengers though, I just hope all of the hype is worth it... Given the films out next year though, only 1 has to come close to its hype and I'll be happy!

Interesting stuff.

Gotta stop reading soon... want to be at least the tiniest bit surprised when I see the movie...

I'm the kind of guy that reads scripts online when I find them. I had a copy of the Star Trek Generations script before they completed filming. That was my biggest find. It was only off by a few scenes.

It may seem like I am ruining the movies for myself, but I still enjoy them. It doesn't feel any different than a movie based on a book. I know what is going to happen and it feels fine. But it does allow me to save myself some pain and trouble. It is why I knew not to go see the Wolverine movie in theaters. I'd have been furious had I paid upwards of $10 to see that.

Dedicated Whedonites will recognise DOLLHOUSE's Enver Gjokaj ("joe-kay"; he's part-Albanian) has been added to the cast in a minor role; he's some kind of city cop. Given that he was one of the best things about DOLLHOUSE (the writers clearly had a lot of fun with him when they learned he could perfectly imitate the other actors), I don't think this will just be a bit-part.

It seems like they're going with a good bit of current Marvel cannon, which isn't a bad decision. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being eerily similar to the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes show. I guess the tentative plan is to still make an Ant Man, Black Panther and perhaps a stand-alone S.H.I.E.L.D. film. I'm still crossing my fingers for Dr. Strange and Luke Cage. That'd be rad.

Considering...

I think I've seen the Eye of Agamotto in Thor...

that's not that far-fetched.

Avengers news of the day. May impact current theories.

Cobie Smulders, who is casted as SHIELD agent Maria Hill, recently told MTV that she is signed on to more than one Marvel film. "Plus this one, seven more I think," she told them. She also disclaimed the contract length saying, "This doesn't mean I'm doing seven films - just means if they like me, then they'll have me on more."

Smulders' comments about the contract length echo tones of Captain America star Chris Evans and Iron Man 2 star Samuel L. Jackson who are locked up in similar long term contracts.
