Want a 911? Why?

The 911's rear seating isn't something to shout about, I can't really fit in the back of a 993, I can tell you that. I heared that the main reason the rear seats were originally put in the 911 was because of taxes, the car companies in Germany paid less taxes for producing 4 seater car's over 2 seater cars. I don't know if they still do or if they only have 4 seats out of tradition now. The only way I'd get in the back without my kness in my chest would be if the guy intront had no legs and had his chair right forward .

Well, the extra seats my be useless for full size adults, but little kids can sit back there, and it offers up a lot of extra room if you are traveling.

True, but when a rich man starts a familly they tend to buy a family car for the kids. They can be used ofcourse, but let's face it, how many people would really be bothered if they were replaced by a compartment to stick your shopping in.

I doubt anyone would care, but if you really wanted it, wouldnt you go with a Cayman?

No because the 911 offers an infinitely better image. I wouldn't go for a Cayman because I think it looks like dog turd past the front end, the average wealthy guy won't go for a Cayman becuase of image, it's a poor mans 911. You have the money for a 911 you want a 911 not the Netto variation. I know that's not what the Cayman really is, but that is how a lot of people viewed the Boxster and still do and I know a few people who look at the Cayman in a similar way. Personally, if I had the money for a 911, I wouldn't buy a Porsche.

It does make me sad that you can add a crossbar to the C in Cayman and make it popular in San Fransisco.

Nonetheless, I don't see "a poor mans 911" I see what the 911 should have been in the first place.

When I have a 911 one day (touch wood) Id have one for when my kids are between the age of 4 and 8, perfect rear seats for them.

I'd much rather have a Cayman than a 911.
Smaller, lighter, and it looks like more fun. That one I don't like so much, but a stock or Ruf tuned one would be nice.

I've been in contact with Ruf Auto here in Texas, and as such, in my last e-mail, I did ask about the Cayman and if Ruf plans to build anything on it's body shell.

I didn't get a solid answer though, only a "We will we have the parts for the Cayman models very soon."

As to the Cayman Vs. 911 debate, it all depends on which models for me.

Id want a 911. For image and looks and power. But in realistic terms Id want an Evo, or in more realistic terms a used AE86 Corolla Trueno thingy.

In realistic terms, a guy who's buying a Porsche to drive it wouldn't give a rat's blue buttocks whether a Cayman was a poor man's anything. It's a sportscar, period. The 911 is a big, fast GT.

And if you're buying a sportscar for family use, the 911 is a very poor choice indeed. Isn't it interesting that most of Porsche's racecar drivers own Cayennes instead? God willing, they'll switch over to the Panamerica when it finally comes out.

Of course a 911 fanatic wouldn't care about Caymans, even though they're cheaper. People are attracted to rear engine cars for their uniqueness and distinct driving characteristics. It's the same way with a mid-engine guy, they wouldn't want a 911.
Then you have people that appreciate both cars for their different characteristics, like myself (if I ever have the money for either), that enjoy driving one just as much as the other.

And yes, the 911's rear seat is more a bench for a suitcase or two.

I don't really like the standard 911. It reminds me of an executive's saloon (HAHA, I'M RICH AND YOU'RE NOT!). And I couldn't care less about the Cayman. I like the 911 GT3. It's derived from a race car, and it's more hardcore.

hmm..i guess your right in a way but no doubt the GT3 is not very practical. In my opinion the 993 was the true example of porsche, and the 996 ruined it. Now the 997 is trying to bring back the theme of the 993 in many different ways. Anyways maybe this is just from my personal experience but i know if i ever bought a 911 it would no doubt not be a 996. I would rather just buy my dads 993 for less if he plans on keeping it.

I would not own a 996 or 997 unless it was given too me.

Give me a lithe, pretty little mid 70's to early 80's 911 any day.

I lament the death of the Air Cooled engines, if for nothing else but the sound they made.

Mr. Boy
Well it's not as if I would use it to drive my kids to school or anything like that. ;)

If you did you'd likely be considered the coolest dad ever, and would be famous among the young boys of the school.

when i was younger i used to love when my dad drove me to skool in his 911. I thought i was so cool but now i realized that it ws just plain stupid to think so. Now i enjoy that car for its performance and feel rather than looks or attention.

I just can't make up my mind. A 997 GT3 RS or a Noble M12?? The Noble is faster, cheaper and pure race. The Porsche is an icon, beautifull semi race (road car) but a lot more expensive. It's not easy to choose between these cars. I've been a kind of Porsche freak since I was little. My interest in Porsche ended when they started making the 996. Now, with this new model, the 997 I'm interested again, although the tail is too similar to a 996. I still don't like the tail lights. My alltime favourite Porsche = 993 4S or 993 S.
In februari, I have had the change to drive a 997 S for over a little of an hour. This car is just fabulous to drive. It makes my personal car look like a 2cv.
The noble is 👍 👍 but the Porsche 997 is 👍 👍 👍 , so....

i think it just depends on what your use for it would be. If you have a family or if ur gonna push the car only every once a while for some fun the 911 is for u. If ur looking for just a performer and not much else then the Noble is the way to go. I would definitly go with a 911, and if i could a 993 turbo.

I'd have the Noble and use my Bora or 306 for the shopping, I wouldn't consider either as my only car. A 911 is pretty useless for a family, it's not bad for the shopping because you can use the "rear seats" to put the shopping on, but try fitting people back there, I've attempted to get in the back of one, once. Basically, neither are really built for more than 2 people to fit in.
