What does everyone here do for work?

I've worked in telecommunications all my working life, I've done everything from sales, to a telephone engineer. Right now I still work in the telecoms and internet market but I'm currently being paid for doing next to nothing at all for 4 hours a day. I'm supposed to be a CRS system technician, but other than run the odd report I rarely have to do much else. There's 4 of us on our team and besides browsing the web our typical day consists of playing card game, having 3 or 4 tea breaks and heavy flirting with the girl on the team with the odd bit of work in between.
If you do this job, how are you meant to afford your TVR Sagaris?

My official title is Animal Carer. I work at a Dog Boarding/Training and Cattery place, and I look after peoples Dogs and Cats. It's pretty fun, and I enjoy it, although I got pretty nicely bitten last week.

In more recent news, I found out an hour a go I'm going to University (College) and doing 'Multimedia and Multimedia Technology'. Last year I actually intended to do Network Engineering, as I have done all of my CCNA, but in the end I thought it was boring and wasn't really what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Look guys Casio really works as a Zombie.

*Just joking*

I'm glad we have an Animal Carer, anyway if I go with my family on the next holiday, want to look after are cat for free.

That's my job! :grumpy:
Jack's Mummy
Well it isn't so much as low expectations once, he finishes year 12, he WILL be getting a job, or returning to school or some sort of study, he won't be sitting on his butt all day.

But don't you sit on your butt all day at school? :sly:

I have school untill 3 ish, then i will clean my house and get my little brother off the bus and feed, then my father will arrive from work and i will go to work myself untill around 1000 and then come home worj out do h.w(rarely) and hit the sack for some A.S at 11. I work as a cook at a restuarant.

This time last year I had this job and I was self employed, the self employed part was killing me, it was damaging my social life, my relationship and then I got ill and stopped everything for a month. Then I went back to my morning job, I just never started my mobile phone reseller business back up. It means I have to be more realistic with my money now, but the wage I get from this job is pretty tidy and I get a decent dividend from my bank each year. But more importantly I'm enjoying life.

Possibly, but to be honest as much as I'd love to own a TVR, a sportscar of any sort isn't high on my list of priorities. I'm putting far more into making sure I have a secure financial future than having something nice and expensive now. I don't need a better paid job though, so while it is possible I will earn more in the future it's more likely that it will be through promotion and pay rises ect, but I don't want a job that's going to be stressfull I've had enough of that. The extra money doesn't mean that much to me to be worth taking away what I value in my life most.

I'm still at College, so no proper work yet.

I am thinking of maybe getting a Saturday job soon, like working in Tesco, washing cars, etc. I'll see what the future brings first before deciding, though.

I keep thinking I want to quit my stressful job and find a job with the least responsibility. I just want to go in, do my work and go home without thinking about work when I get home.

My father almost done that.

He was a software engineer, but due to the increasing demands of keeping up with the latest coding languages and such, he was getting more and more stressed out. He had to learn new things at home in his own time, so he didn't have much spare time for the rest of the family. In the end, the company done him some good and made him redundant, just before he gave in himself, for reasons I cannot say due to an agreement. Ever since, he has been so much more happy and jolly, despite the fact he still hasn't got another job yet. He is thinking of a career change to something he will enjoy, but he doesn't quite know what to do.

What is more worth it: being happy and earning less, or depressed and miserable while earning a lot? I know which one I'd rather do.

The problem is money. If I quit my well paid job with lots of responsibility and move to a job without any the salary is usually alot less. Bills have to be paid.

I'm looking to work for a major retail chain such as Virgin as I've heard good reports about the working environment.

I have experience with both of thoes, when I was self employed I had almost no time to do anything, no time to relax, no time to go anywhere with the missues and I was always tired. Since I stopped my mobile phone business I've had none of thoes problems. I've been relaxed, I'm not tired all the time, I'm not feeling pressured. I just go to work, play cards, discuss football and whatever with the odd bit of work in between. The odd day there's a major problem which takes most of the day to fix and we might not ge a break but the jobs relaxed. What I would do is like to take over as the team manager should the opportunity arise, there's a bit more to do with regards to general day to day stuff, but it's still the same hours and a bit better pay.

I get to do that in my job. It is nice getting home and not worrying too much about work.

I have responsibility at work, but we run three shifts so there is always someone at the office to deal with any issue when I am not there. It is a rare occasion that I get a call at home, and that is usually a "Do you remember this order because..." or "This special request order came in. Do you know how to..." Those are typically less than five minutes and require little to no stress.

Then, of course there is always the philosophy that work should never leave the office, but as G.T mentioned with his father's case you sometimes have to kind of study to keep up. This is why you try to work in something you love because then you want to keep up and study the new technology, so it isn't work outside of work, it is you enjoying your personal time.

Well I work was as a letting agent (Basically I rent out properties on behalf of landlords and manage it for them). When a tenant doesn't pay rent or causes damage to a property we have to inform the landlord. All the landlords want is their money and if the don't get it they are on the phone to me.

We advise landlords at the start of the tenancy that if a tenant does not pay he will have to take him to court to get an eviction notice. The problem is with the "red tape" that surrounds property laws I'm always worrying that I may have done something wrong or that I'm going to be harassed by a landlord the next day.

I'm also in charge of hitting target for that month, if I don't then the company loses money.

At the moment all I keep thinking about is getting a job as a DHL delivery man. I get a van, parcels and I have to deliver them. Nice & simple.

If you need to study to keep up on *insert specific job related item here*, then it should be done at work. I have gone to seminars, both traveled to and online, and am given plenty of leeway to dig into new AutoCAD features, all at work and all paid for.

What about my job? It's stressful and it doesn't pay well. 👎
Something tells me with all the hotness you work with, you won't get much sympathy.

I'm a Driver for an auto parts company...

The Pros? Company car, consistent hours, seldom stressful, and I bear a minimum of responsibility.

The Cons? Bad pay ($9.00/hour), poor working conditions (at least one, probably two out of our branch's four vehicles wouldn't pass inspection), lots of heavy lifting and dirty parts, completely incompetent co-workers and boss, bureaucratic anemic company whose policies are outdated.

The Dilemma - I've been seriously planning to quit for the past couple weeks. The boating season will be starting to ramp up in later Febuary in my area, so I was planning on applying at a couple marine companies. But today I was, in slightly different wording, informed that a counterman/counter sales position was likely to open up and I was on a shortlist to get the promotion if I wanted...
I guess it'll all come down to the pay. In my world right now, the best paying job is going to win. And if I choose to stay, I'll still have to deal with most of the incompetents I do now, and the pay will still likely suck. After all, it's going to require a bit of savings in advance before I can start on a commercial pilots license.

Edit - Is bureaucratic spelled correctly?

I forgot to mention my most importantest job in the whole world, doesn't pay very well though.

BEING JACKS MUM.

Ah, you have one of those "we're going to call you to whine at all hours of the day and night" type jobs. I knew a malpractice defense lawyer who had the rule that you did not call her after 6 PM. I don't knwo if you could work that out though.

If it were a perfect world, but it isn't and some employers will not pay for what they consider to be your responsibility.

Yep. Prime example happened today. Obviously the wind at the moment is terrible. Tenants phone up and say "can you put the fence back up". I say "There's no point as it's going to be windy tonight and it will probably blow down again". None of our handymen will work with fencing when the wind is this bad.

coincidence. that's what I do. Except I'm in theatre design. And my title is "Cad Administrator.

I'm an AutoCAD manager for an Electrical Engineer. I take their hand drawings and make them look pretty, among other things. Basically, I fit in between Duke designing something and Der Alta building it.

I am another AutoCAD man. If we had a CAD manager or Administrator that would be me. Instead its like...hey you...why can't I make a dwf file Or what ever nonsense I shown them how to do dozens of times before.

That is the point at which you say you either pay me to do it at home, I do it at work or it doesn't get done. If I do anything job related, I'm getting paid for it. I have outstanding employers. In fact, there was an occasion where I was doing CAD at home on the weekend and forgot to put it on my time sheet. They came and asked how much time I had worked so they could pay me for it. As for the seminars I mentioned before, I was paid for the 8 hour round trip drive, motel, gas, mileage, and meals. 👍

Don't you just love those questions? I personally like the ones from people we e-transmit drawings to. "Can you send me the .ctb file so I can print your drawings?" You mean the one in the .zip file right next to the drawings you want to print? "How come there's no background? Where are the walls and doors?" Did you bother to extract the zip, or just open the one file you are looking for? Unfortunately, if you want to keep your job and have work from said people, you still have to be civil to them and answer their questions. While muttering under your breath, of course.

I feel your pain...Every single week I get a drawing that has an xref missing from the dwg and the guy that sent it to me just doesn't understand why the file he sent me is junk. Its hard to believe that sending drawings over the internet is still such a crapshoot. These people are smart enough to learn CAD but can't figure out how to share it with me. :banghead:

I am a teacher of 6/7 year olds at a school in the SW of England. I soooooo need GT4 !!!!!!!!! No explanation needed I hope!
