My computer is slow as hell and the mouse hand always starts to go into the spinning ball. It's an old imac and i upgraded everything I could but it's looking like I'm gonna have to get a new one soon. I decided today that maybe reinstalling the OS might fix some issues. I did this maybe last year and it helped a lot. I started it at about noon today and left it. It's supposed to install than reboot and install a secondary thing. It is now almost 10pm and not done. I know it installed and rebooted but seems to be stuck at this second install thing. It's weird because I can still use the mouse and i know it's working. The time count down is still going it just isn't accurate. I'm debating but stopping it but am worried about what will happen. Probably give it another 20min and see where it's at. Gonna be really screwed if it's dead and I need a new one instantly.

Well to add to my exciting story. I was running snow leopard on it and decided to fully install it again. Estimated time was 30min but ended taking 15hrs. Plus it didnt help anything unfortunately. I had to erase the entire drive which took a couple hours and than another 15hrs for the OS again... Still isn't working great. It runs Internet browsing fine which is now an improvement but that's it. I downloaded a random program that was only 55mb. I open the file and it tells me to drag it into the applications folder. Normally it would take literally 1second, but it took 6min. Everything still works fine but it's just so crazy slow which makes me think hard drive will definitely fail soon. Decided on the new 27 inch imac for its replacement. Should be here early next week.

*Pssst* try PC *Pssst* Easier to fix but *Pssst* I am afraid of all those Apple fanboys since one, and this truly happened, tried to break my Acer Laptop only because it had the better Graphics and overall much more power for only half the price of his MB.

Sorry if this was too Windows-Fanboyish

(posted that with my hated iPhone hahaha)

EDIT: Your tunes are great, shmo!!!;-)
EDIT2: the guy who tried to break my baby was 16 at that time, sorry but you shall not think that I hang aroung with 8-y/o Fanboy kiddies... this happened in my class... :worried of my generation:

Today, I got my first-ever experience of Windows 8. I played around at a Sam's Club and at a Wal-Mart with PC and laptop systems that have Windows 8 on them. It will have to be something for me to get used to if and when I do get a computer equipped with Windows' latest interface. It is very strange to have to dig down into the far bottom left corner to use the Start Menu and deep in the top right corner to close certain Start Menu material. I almost liken this Windows 8 to be more like an app-crazy OS much like iOS or Android. I mostly use Android "Gingerbread" with my Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 and the SGP 3.6 I used to use, so I can relate. I could really see some potential with this newer Windows interface in app usage and overall usability, but I'm told it isn't all that good and that the interface is still fairly young. I at least see potential and usability in using Windows 8. Screens and systems that have touchscreen interfaces are more comfortable to me for using and utilizing the Windows 8 Start Menu and its features.

Other than that, I'm still enjoying WinXP on my *aging* 2005-ish PC.

Well, you can set it up to basically never interact with the metro UI. I never use the start screen on my desktop, but on a touchscreen laptop it works exceptionally well. I've had good experiences with Windows 8 so far.

Once you go mac, you never go back lol. It's actually true tho. I use windows now and want to die. They aren't really that much cheaper either since the closest screen to an imac for pc is about $800 alone. They build the computers and operating system to work perfectly with each other so it's a lot smoother and the test scores are usually faster compared to the windows price range equivalent.

I was gonna get the cheapest imac because I managed to get a really good deal on it, but I ended up getting a even better deal on a more expensive one. The thing with macs is 99% of the upgrades have to be done at the time of purchase which super sucks because apple charges a crazy amount for the smallest upgrade. I ended up getting the 27inch imac with 3.6GHz turbo boosted quad core with 8gb of ram (upgradable to 32gb). All of its specs are much better than the cheapest 21.5inch imac plus bigger screen and i was able to get it for just a few hundred bucks more. Comes this Wednesday or Thursday. I am already excited.

I also fixed my old one to the point where it can run some programs and the Internet pretty well. Only things it has trouble with is saving, moving files, or heavy cpu things. The best part of macs operating system is you can run the full os off an external had drive. My plan now is buy a much faster ssd drive and install the OS on that. Than it will be even better than before.

Also glad you're enjoying the tunes lol. There will be many more once I get my new computer. It used to take me about an hour to edit pics since my computer was slow but i am aiming for 20min with the power of the new one.

Funny, I went mac and then 4 years later I built my own PC :P
As for $800 screens, it's simply not true. I have a $200 monitor that looks better than what was on my mac, and you can buy a monitor from monoprice with the same panel as the 27" iMac for $400.

iMacs have their place but they are simply not good value in a desktop machine. Macbooks are more price comptetive, but unless you highly value OS X, they are "that expensive".

People always compare their homemade pc to a mac. It is irrelevant how cheap and good you can make it yourself since it's not a real brand of computer. All the cost of assembly and marketing has been taken out so of course you can build a better one for cheaper. I could buy all the parts from China and assemble my own imac at cost and it would be way cheaper. So what? Only price for spec performance of computers you can actually buy this second can be compared. But yes agreed they aren't cheap.

I didn't compare my homebuilt computer on price... I was just saying that I went mac and then I went pretty far back

Lol you are the 1%. For me I realize I paid a bit more but don't care at all since I am faster in day to day on the mac. I also saved $300 from sticker price on this one so the deal was pretty sweet.

Added a second SSD to my system.

I had one 64 gig SSD as the system drive. Now I have another which I will install games on. I'm looking forward to seeing the performance increase.

Assuming you got the top line model for $300 off? If so that's not a bad deal at all, that computer's a bit pricey at $2000 but at $1700 with that gorgeous 1440p screen, I'd be tempted.

That's pretty much what happened. With tax the model comes to 2k but I got it with tax for $1700. Plus I can add 32gb of ram for $200 myself and if I did that through apple it's like a $600 upgrade. So really I'm saving $700 my way. I wanted the 21inch imac but you can't add your own ram later anymore (so stupid) so I'd have to upgrade it to its max 16gb at purchase. That came to $1600 so for $100 more I got the 27inch screen with a better processor, better video card, better hard drive, and ability to upgrade to 32gb ram. It was a deal I couldn't refuse lol.

Only thing that really sucks is they have 1-2 shipping, but I ordered on Friday and Monday is a holiday. It won't come until Wednesday or Thursday which ends up being basically a week waiting.

I finally got round to swapping the 2TB drive from my Mac to my PC, installing an old 320GB drive back in the Mac to complement the 640GB one it came with and the 1TB drive it's had for a while. The PC, on the other hand, is now up to 4TB and a 128GB SSD.

If my Pro had native SATA III I might've treated it to an SSD as well, but as it is I feel it would be a bit wasted. I might look in to an SATA III controller PCI card but frankly I don't do much work on my Mac any more and only really use my PC for gaming (and plenty of it) and electronics simulations. The Mac is more or less just used for Processing and Arduino, a far cry from the huge, huge vector files I used to do which were completely maxing out the capabilities of my old (and I mean old!) PowerMac G5. I'd sell the Pro on and replace it with a Linux box, only I'm not going to get anywhere near as much for it now as I paid for it back in 2009 so I intend to hang on to it and eventually replace it with a Hackintosh. Being the tech head I am, it's quite nice having a Xeon workstation...!

Other than that, we're having problems with our Internet connection. Some sites work, some don't, most non-browser connections work too - I'm logged in to Steam right now, though I can't access the store, and I just had a conversation (discussing this issue) with my Dad who is in Iran via FaceTime. I'm waiting for BT to call me back but I don't think this is attributable to them, though resetting the router (which was fine yesterday) has no effect.

BT your ISP right?

I'd ask about if there is an alternate DNS server you can use. Had a similiar experience happen, and the ISP had problems with their main DNS servers. Changed to their alternate ones and problem went away.

If there's a website you can't get to. See if you can lookup the DNS on your phone(if you have a smartphone) try just using the DNS address instead of the domain name.

If that works then it's a DNS issue.

Can also try google dns servers. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Well, in preparation for BF4, I have started thinking about swaping out my 590's for a couple 780's. I need to refine my water loop and provide a bit more flow by adding a second inline pump to help things though the system.

Although I haven't actually done anything yet, just thinking about it usually gets me in a bit a trouble. :)

Oh hey guys I forgot to mention in my other post but any ideas on what I should do with my old one? My old imac still works great it just can't save or transfer files well. The best and worst thing about the imac is its everything in one. I could hook it to a tv and use it to stream movies but it's sort of awkward since it will have the giant screen. Any suggestions?

Listening music...;-)

Oops, I forgot to mention that we discovered the problem almost immediately after I posted this. There was an unpaid bill that we'd managed to ignore and BT's method of dealing with that is to block port 80, but they're also supposed to redirect any connections to a page that says 'pay your bill!', but they were doing something to that system at the time so it wasn't working (or so they said). They weren't particularly happy that YouTube and Steam still worked though!

I thought you hate your iMac and macs/Apple in general

Sell or trade in for a windows computer. But that's just me.:sly:

Installing a few games I got for free last Sunday and installing updates on my IBM Thinkpad 600X. I also played The Oregon Trail today on the thinkpad. Fun experience to play it in a classic GUI mode.
