What is the scariest horror movie?

lemansfanatic
I agree with the fact that the best horror is the one that messes with your head (ie: confuses, dramatic twists, lets you imagine rather than shows monster) but even still i went to see 1408 in the theater because i really like John Cusak and i really wanted to be scared and like this movie. it was pretty good, but i feel like it lost it halfway in. It had a great buildup and massive scarry potential but then...meh i dunno, didnt quite launch me out of my seat like a scarry movie needs to. overall not bad, just wasted potential. still well acted though.

I really enjoyed the way it was built up. Very unpredictable and constantly engaging. Lots of different elements that were being built up if you know what I mean.

Oh, and 2600 posts. :D

I think movies are only truly terrifying when your young. Ive watched a lot of horror movies and they dont do anything for me now I see The Ring mentioned a few times in this thread, it was a very good movie but I saw it more as a thriller than pure horror. Paranormal Activity was a good movie too but again not really frightening. Also older horror movies seem funny to me with their lower quality cgi...

So, the late nineties?

house on haunted hill ( the remake ), spooked me out on a couple scenes, while some other scenes were kind of blah.... then again i was young when this came out 1996?

Flowers of Flesh and Blood...a j-horror film made in the nineties (Why are all scary movies Japanese?)

The killings in it are so realistic that Charlie Sheen called the FBI at two in the morning to report it as a snuff film (Seriously, look it up).

I agree. I remember watching "IT" by Stephen King as a kid and I could not sleep for a good week. Watching now would have a almost no effect, its still a good movie but it`ll never be as scary as when you watch it as a kid.

I generally stay away from horror movies. I don't really feel scared when I watch them but my brain continues to put images in my head when I'm trying to sleep. Films like Saw which are just pure gore I also stay away from.

However, give me a sci-fi horror like Alien and I'll watch them all night.

I need some clarification. Are we looking for the scariest movie? Or the scariest horror movie? Because horror movies are their own genre, some are scary, some are not. Scary movies cross genres.

The scariest movie I ever remember seeing was Communion (sci fi) with Christopher Walken. I'm not sure it would still be scary if I rewatched it given that I was a lot younger at the time. Fire in the Sky usually gets mentioned along with Communion, and I saw that one too but I think I remember Communion being scarier.

Anything with Christopher Walken in it scares me! He is awesome to watch though.

Same here, I remember watching Poltergeist when I was around 10 years old. And it properly **** me up, now 10 years on I can watch anything and not get remotely scared.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
👍 This is the last major horror flick that bothered me. I think watching the extras scared me more. The movie is based on a true story and some of the real footage is scary as hell. That whole bit where Emily is speaking multiple voices simultaneously is freaky, and the real footage of it is actually scarier than what they reproduced in the film! I don't know, nobody else I know found it scary, but this one gave me the creeps.

A very distant second is 28 Days Later. The cinematography, the new take on zombies, the music and atmosphere all blended perfectly to give this flick a decent fright factor. I don't think it's the scariest out there, but it is a damn good movie.

I am surprised no one mentioned Triangle ( 2009), starring Melissa George, Liam Hemsworth, an UK and Australian production that will make you intrigued with a very good suspense, mystery and a bit of horror. Check the movie out, you will need to watch it several times, it gets better very time :D

Triangle 2009

I really didn't like Triangle. I don't feel there's enough scares to be a horror film.

The Exorcist (1973) is in my opinion the scariest movie of all time. Simply for the fact that no other movie seems to get under my skin and into my head like it. Didn't care for the Paranormal activity series at all. Not a fan of the way most movies try to scare you by having things just pop out and scare you, if I wanted that I would ask my cousin to hide in my house and scare me. I guess the way things just progress worse and worse in that movie that just freaks me out. Loved it so much that its the only movie downloaded on my ps3. Never been too religious so can't say much from that point of view. Also, cgi in horror movies has really dissapointed me. Just something about make up and pea soup that makes all that is fake seem that much more real.

Arachnaphobia really scared me when I was younger. It's those damn spiders. Nowadays, it is a great comedy!

The scariest horrormovie I've seen isn't really a horror, but it is so disturbing I couldn't get it out of my mind for about a week.

"Antichrist" by Lars Von Trier.

If you are planning to watch it, prepare yourself. It starts out as a slow drama, but it will get very disturbing.

Human Centipede was disturbing and scary because it seems like the kind of thing some nut job may actually try and replicate. That is basis of the 2nd film, I read the synopsis, no way I'm watching that tripe. :D

I just found out about that movie last night and it's been bothering me the whole day. I haven't watch it and I'm not sure if I should. The title of the movie, the idea of it, is just extremely disturbing. :ill:

Human Centipede may be a pretty gruesome flick, but scary? Not at all if I'm honest.

The most memorable thing for me was the Japanese guy shouting and screaming for almost the entire duration of the movie. That also happened to be the most irritating thing in a film which I didn't particularly like.

^Haha. When I first (and only time) saw it I wanted to post it here, May have and edited it.

Put it in the most stupid films thread. feels more appropriate.

I also didn't really like it and it was mostly irratiationg.
Though it was mainly the idea, as in the first one there isn't a lot of gore and disgusting liquids and solids. In that part they succeeded, no lot of gore and **** but an very unsettling feeling throughout the movie.
But didn't like it

Oh Shintaro, as much as I hate to disagree with you. Ever.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is pretty scary for a courtroom drama.
Whatever Danny, whatever.

👍

Yeah, same with my group. Everybody thinks it's pretty funny how I got freaked out by the Emily Rose. One night, I ended up kidnapping one of my buddies, because I didn't want to drive alone(long story).

Ditto on the 28 Days Later. I didn't really find it scary, but man, damn fine film. 👍 28 Weeks, not so much.

I liked it, but not scary.
Event Horizon.......terrifying.
Yes, and very good. I don't care what Famine says about what he'd rather do to his eyes than watch it. :D

One that scared / stayed with me most. Was Omen, the old thing made in the 70's.

I think the strong effect it had was mainly as I was pretty young when I saw it and the experience was more 'real' to my young brain.

Also the Jack Nicholson The Shining which I was freaked out by and then woke up the next morning with a gut retching bout of vomiting, which wiped me out all day. Of course not related but it seemed {at the time} to be some kind of after-effect.
