Finding Dory
I will start it out with the facts:
- Fact #1: Finding Nemo is the most forgettable Pixar film I can think of.
- Fact #2: Dory is the most annoying character, to me, of a Pixar film I have seen.
- Fact #3: I will be talking about Toy Story 1.
- Fact #4: I will abuse italics.
What do you get when you make a sequel to a forgettable film starring the most annoying character I've ever seen in a Pixar film? I'll tell you what I didn't get: my money's worth (or my brother's money's worth, to be honest, he didn't like it either).
The problem with Finding Dory is that the star of the film has short-term memory loss. This means every line Dory says is basically repeated one to three times more afterwards, because she forgot of what she was talking about. It's okay in Finding Nemo, since it's her first appearance. It's completely uncalled for in Finding Dory. We know Dory has short-term memory loss, we don't need to be reminded of it every time she opens her mouth. Keep it for the vital parts of the film only.
The movie basically followed the same plot of Finding Nemo, and while this isn't exactly an issue (see Toy Story 2 to Toy Story), the problem is that the actions themselves are basically the same. You can draw parallels of almost every event you see in this film and compare it to Finding Nemo, something which was harder with Toy Story 2, and even then, the film was still entertaining because it had fresh jokes and funny characters.
About the plot, I'll only say that, as a film student, I would get failed for writing certain very important parts of Finding Dory. The rule of thumb is "don't rely on silly coincidences", and this movie broke them... quite often. Toy Story had one moment where the authors could have easily pulled off something like this: once Buzz and Woody are left on the street, Woody lights up Buzz's rocket using a match conveniently placed on his holster by Sid. But it is put off by a car passing by. What he does next is a call back to an earlier event in the film, back when Sid burned his forehead using a magnifying glass. There's nothing like it in Finding Dory. What we end up seeing is a far fetched resemblance of something that sort of happened earlier in the film, but that conveniently plays out well for no real reason other than "just because". It's something that's annoying because the coincidence happened when the writers felt the film had to be coming to a close, meaning it could have happened 50 minutes earlier and played exactly the same... but we would have an hour long film.
Of the cast of characters, my favorite one was probably the whale because she was cute and funny, along with the other guy living next to her. The octopus started strong, but became tiresome thanks to Dory after a while. I could identify with his hatred for him, not so as the film went on and on.
Oh, and it abused cuteness and flashbacks way too much.
My score: 4 aw yiss/10. Don't even bother watching unless you really like Finding Nemo, or Dory.
