Hi Folks,

I'm curious as to what wheel/ stand (playseat etc.) you guys are using. In particular, I'm curious as to what the top guys are running because there seems to be a correlation between running quicker with the higher end wheels with good mounting/seat setups and the "lower cost" wheels like the Driving Force GT mounted on a table and "stuck in the carpet" pedals. :)

I'm running a Driving Force GT mounted on a somewhat flimsy table and the pedals "stuck" in the carpet. :) I'm currently in the top 20 overall in the Northeast with a few top 15 times:

Tsukuba - 1'05.775 (Set a week ago, wayy more time in there)
Rome - 1'22.0xx (Still figuring it out, 1'21's in sight)
Cape Ring - 2'47.6xx (Targeting high 2'46's based on my previous best sectors)

Please post what setup you are running and your ranking/times. Thanks!

and P.S. - I'm not suggesting the setups are the sole reason for better performance - Great jobs to the top guys, you are fast and very talented!!!

Logitech GT here, set up on a nice laptop table, allows me to use a XRocker gaming chair and pedals 'stuck' in the carpet. Its positioned very close to a real car - the pedals/wheel in relation to my height in the chair etc. I came from using the dual analog and highly recommend getting a wheel setup.

Ill have to post my times this evening, nothing terribly fast but thought I'd pitch in what I am using.

I'm using a Logitech Driving Force Pro with bungie cord pedal mod. Its mounted on a custom made table with the pedals laying flat on the carpet. I got my seat for free on craigslist. It came out of an old truck and I just put a carseat cover on it. My screen is a 42" 720p plasma, Yamaha receiver, Infinity front speakers, Klipsch sub, no surround sound! I sit about 6 feet away from the tv.

Last I checked I was #1 in the West, #5 in the Nation.

Tsukuba - 1:05.202
Rome Rev - 1:21.598
Cape Ring - 2:46.0xx

Picture of my setup (some things have changed)

$17 Adjustable laptop table and a folding chair. :)

As of last night I was sitting 15th in the West, although I need to work on Cape Ring a bit. I can get a top 10 time at Rome, just need get through the first corner a little better.

Won't be home till later this month so I can't take pictures, but my setup is:

Utility table
G25
Office chair

5th in the Northeast, 9th in the US - sitting in this while mounting my well used G25 on one of these

For times I'm running a 1:05.400, 1:21.642, and 2:46.3xx - goals for this week (based on best sectors) are 1:05.2xx, 1:21.5xx, and 2:45.xxx.

Blindside- no excuses hah? Barebones equipment and you're tearing it up! Nice work.

Though for the rest of the guys, there does seem to be a correlation between "FAST" and the level of equipment one uses. If anything, the precision of the wheels with respect to "Deadband" I think can be a big factor, and the feel/responsiveness (on/off/modulation and the time it takes to rebound) of the pedals. This may prove to be a small, but measurable and signficant advantage with the "premium wheels." Though, it may just be that you are all very dedicated Sim drivers, and want the best equipment! I think the two go hand in hand.

Thanks for sharing. I do want to upgrade my wheel/pedals, and my whole rig really...but I think if I were to make it to Orlando (may still be possible to snag a top 8 Northeast spot, though I need to continue to put time in) it may prove beneficial to have a lot of practice on the driving force GT.

I use a G27 with a home made pine wheel stand. But some of the fastest use DFGT, so the wheel really doesn't matter.

I wouldn't consider myself a top driver, but I'm #32 (last I checked) in the SE and like #140 overall.

I use DFGT mounted to a table with a dining chair at my house and apartment when school is in session. Have a 42" HDTV (1080p) at the apartment and a standard 27" TV (480p) at home. I also use the bungie mod on my pedals as what Hunk shows in his video.

Would you happen to know who specifically in the top 10 is using a DFGT? Including yourself, all of the top guys who responded are using a G25 or better. :) I'm just curious that's all...the data definitely shows a correlation, how much the actual impact is tough to quantify.

Quick Tally for Reference:

Randum 311 - DFGT
TRC_Hunk - #1 West, #5 Nation -DF Pro w/ Bungie Mod
Forcednduckshn - ~#15 Northeast, #30 Nation - Budget Rig DFGT
TRC_Scooty - BALLER G27 Setup
R1600Turbo - Poor man's Rig, What wheel?
Choate 51 - #1 Region, #2 Nationally - BALLER G27 Setup
xe2Bls - (FixByWire) - (Newly Crowned Alien) - #1 Nation - Budget Rig G25
Blindeside50 - #5 Northeast, #9 Nation - Budget Rig G25
Dapper/ Eers4Years - Top 10 Nation? - Homerade Rig G27

Peluski - ~#32 SE, #140 overall - Budget Rig DFGT

Fast on budget. You should autocross. :) What wheel do you use?

TRC_Hunk is enough proof for me. Quality of the wheel only affects how fun the game is in my opinion.

I think the reason the top guys have high end stuff is, like you said, they are passionate about sim racing and are more likely to invest the big bucks on their equipment than casual racers.

If I had a G27 and a DFGT I would use the DFGT in case I made it to the finals. But, if you dont think you have a realistic chance of making it that far then obviously go with the G27 because it is the superior wheel.

I am fully satisfied with my DFP because Ive never used anything better. However, if I thought there was a significant advantage using a G25/27 then Id probably invest in one.

The only reason I don't have a nice rig is simple...not enough money :/ Can't complain about my low budget setup, but would love a playseat and a G27 or the new T500RS.

I don't have a car of my own and have never driven a manual, but drive manual in game as it is the best way to go. I use racing games to get my driving fix.

This site has taught me a lot and I have seen myself improve over the course of the GT Academy. I don't expect to make it past the 2nd round, but it doesn't mean I won't give my best ;)

After week one, 5th in west, 20th overall. I'm using a table much like TRC_Hunk's and an office chair with casters. Wheel is a G27.

Home-made wheel stand / craigslist ($20) 240sx seat with sliders/recline.

Mounted wheels on the nose so it can be rolled from storage to TV wheelbarrow style.

Measurements made from my evo and translated as close as possible to the device. Custom reverse/hung pedals and modded brake pedal spring for stiffer resistance.

Did the hanging pedal mod and 240sx seat just prior to game release. Stiffer brake spring just before gt academy started. 80th place west region 250th overall. Noticeable room for improvement and have spent about 3 hours total time so-far.

Considering the chilicoke.com wheel adapter to run a larger diameter wheel.... All of these mods were made specifically for a more realistic gaming experience, not just for gt academy.

Thanks Hunk!

I have a buddy from work with table saws etc.... Probably spent 80 bucks or so in materials (plywood, 2x4's, 2x6's, indoor/outdoor carpet, and hardware) and it took a few hours. Before it was covered in carpet and rattle canned black, my wife wouldn't even let it in the house!!! Had to do something to keep from freezing my a** off in the garage (or sweating it off in the summer...lol)

the beginning phase (little over a year ago)

My Driving Force Pro that I bought years ago but rarely used is mounted on a $15 coffee table from Wal-Mart, my pedals are on top of a $20 large carpet I got at Costco, and my seat is a very uncomfortable minimally padded folding chair, also from Costco.

Strange thing is that it would be feasible for me to buy the new Thrustmaster and a Playseat but my current setup works fine. My behind may beg to differ, though.

Bugman did u make that rig? Are u the Jesse James of racing cockpits? I dont know what is more win, the rig or the fact that you play Gran Turismo on your freakin deck.

That was pretty funny :)
Thanks, I do enjoy the you-know-what out of building these. However, the cool points I was given are tainted... Alas, I do not play on my deck. I had to take it outside for some photos in the sunlight; It's on eBay (as we speak) and everyone wanted better pictures.
