What wheel/seat/stand setup are you using? (Top Guys in Particular Please Respond)

Hehe, no I didn't make mine, I just had it laying around the house probably from a garage sale. As for the plates, they are just temporary to keep the table from moving around too much. And if I took out the casters, the wheel would be too low for my liking.

In round two I will probably modify it a bit by removing the casters, raising it up a bit, and making it more rigid. Oh, and getting a different chair, my ass will thank me.

The only difference is I am now on a Sony Bravia TV and have an Astro headset instead of the Trittons.

Ok guys, long time lurker first time poster. I'm looking for some advice about setup and getting used to the wheel. I'm, as of today, ranked 51 on the east, 192 overall all with controller. Now I've had a DFGT since the game was released, but I just can't seem to get adjusted. I've been using the bungie mod and it's helped but I feel too cramped in my current set up. My problem is that I can't stretch my legs out enough because the bottom of my desk where my ps3 and pc sit, I use a pc monitor to play ps3, is solid wood. I know I have to get used to it but because I'm so cramped I'm just naturally more comfortable and faster with the controller. So what do I do? It feels like every time I go back to controller I lose touch with the feel of the wheels and pedals even after an hour of laps on a particular course. Should I just avoid using the controller at this point even though it's faster in the hopes that I can adjust for the next rounds or just keep doing what works?

I use a folding beach chair with a small pillow to sit on and a large blanket to make the metal bar in the back "softer." My wheel is mounted on a simple TV table, using half a dozen coffee table books as counterweights. It's not good, but it's adjustable for seat position, which is your issue. The force feedback and quick corrections make the whole thing wobble a bit, and I've had to pause in the middle of laps to keep the books from falling off.

I'll try to throw up a picture, but my camera is dead right now.

Update - I'm JUST getting used to the DFGT. I've been focusing on Cape Ring, and I finally beat my old time, by 0.366 seconds - good enough to move back up to 5th, right behind 4th place, and just outside the 5:11's. I still can't hit sector 2 of the Cape as consistently as I could with the G25, and I'm using "different" braking techniques to deal with the pedals, but I'll continue to get used to it I suppose.

At 51 you're probably gauranteed to get into round 2 at this point, so I'd start practicing with DFGT. I had the same problem with my table, my solution was to extend the table. I've used a cutting board and a long shelf so far. As long as you have enough counterweight you're good :) My counterweights are my jackstands and jacks in a box with the ps3 on top of that :D

Another solution would be a cheap computer desk from office depot or something.

Just made my debut post in the thread about how many hours a day you're putting in on GT5.

I'm glad I looked at this thread. I should have known that equipment doesn't make the driver. I'm going to grab a Logitech something or other and put together some sort of cohesive set up and start posting hot laps. At least I hope they're hot.

Here it is - a picture of my setup. I hate every aspect of it. The beach chair is painful, even with the small pillows. That TV table is pretty worn out so it'll sway back and forth a few inches - notice the coffee table books on top acting as ballast to hold the whole thing down...

I also don't like the DFGT. The pedals are atrocious, and the wheel isn't as nice as my G25 - and what's with the stupid groaning sounds it makes? Sometimes if you hold the wheel in a certain position it will moan like a dying cat.

I'm going to stick it out with the DFGT, and not use the bungee mods to stay used to the soft pedals, but I might try to get a better stand and certainly a better seat...if I'm lucky I can hold out for the last Playseat, but I don't really know where I'll put it

There is hope for me yet! I'm using the same folding-style table blindside. I'll have to try the "ballast" approach as occasionally I pull the wheel and table out of alignment. I gave up and tried the bungie mod...definitely worth while as I was using way too much brake before. Now that I've learned to be judicious with the brake I could probably switch back but I like the feel of the bungie better.

Mine does that aswell. weird as ****.

Can you believe this is the wheel/pedal set that will be deciding who will move on to the final 16 and eventually become a professional driver? I know this wheel was made for the GT series but I guess I thought for a competition this serious, a better wheel would be used. And I think you've done something wrong as a company when your customers can go to a hardware store, spend $2 and enormously improve the realism of the product.

....and, end rant. Sorry just had to get that off my chest. It's been bugging me for a while.

If you put the DFGT pedals on a hard floor or a non-grippy carpet and tried the bungie trick it wouldn't work. The pedals would slip away from you every time you pushed hard. The pedals are soft to accommodate all sorts of living room racers. The heavier, more expensive, pedal sets are designed to be anchored by more than just a carpet and therefore can set whatever resistance they want without fear of alienating its customer base.

As for the DFGT making groaning noises and having a noticable dead zone...well I think that is just a result of the price point.

Unacceptable. The technology is 10 years old. It's a freaking PS2 wheel, and PS3 has been out for 5 years.

For a true competition the technology should be top grade so it's everyone's true skills that are tested, not their ability to handle outdated technology. They should have gone with the TM500, or made the the g25/27 the official gt5 wheel...instead of essentially the same wheel that was the official gt4 wheel.

My thrown together set-up. Microsoft wheel has now been pushed off to the side in place of a DFGT. Not pretty but it works.

So have any of you guys got your playseats yet or are you still waiting for them to be shipped?

Also, GT Motion, how's your neck feeling with looking up at the TV like that?

Winners will be announced on Jan 30, so I'm guessing we will all get our prizes a few weeks after that. We probably won't have them in time to use them for the later rounds of the competition. =(

Just for round 2 :D

I'm using a Logitech Driving Force Pro with bungie cord pedal mod. Its mounted on a custom made table with the pedals laying flat on the carpet. I got my seat for free on craigslist. It came out of an old truck and I just put a carseat cover on it. My screen is a 42" 720p plasma, Yamaha receiver, Infinity front speakers, Klipsch sub, no surround sound! I sit about 6 feet away from the tv.

Pmc, here's what i've done with a similar kind of gaming chair.

20110125130700290.jpg

just some 2x4's, 2x6's (base and pedal support), plywood for all the non vertical surfaces, and some good ol` fashioned glue and nails to hold it all together! I threw an old towel on the pedal support and put the carpet grip down to help keep the pedals in place.

So yeah, here's a little more detailed shot of what I recommend doing for a chair of this type. Make a cradle to hold the chair, a little rickety getting in and out of the seat but once you get used to it, it's fine and doesn't move at all when you're sitting in it. And yeah, it's sweet, when you want to play, you just pull the steering wheel and pedals to the desired/comfortable distance, and when you're done, you just push it away and get up. I ended up sitting lower than i wanted to so i had to put some 2x4's under the cradle to lift me up but other than that, it's been a really good, rigid setup with no problems!

Hope this helps! (and sorry for the size of the pictures, ima n008 when it comes to uploading this stuff..)
