They tax tourists, because they need to survive.

I priced up some airfares to Brisbane and it cost $600NZD + $200NZD in tax

:(

I'd really like to go, I've been to Australia as a baby and thankfully didn't remember a thing.

But then again I haven't been overseas in a few years.

What—South Island not overseasies enough for you? The people down there are quite—ur, diverse…

Lol @ comments about Canberra, talk about generalizing... funny that most of the pollys live in melbourne and sydney, they just fly to Canberra to work..

Facts about Canberra

* Pot is semi legal in the Capital but not the rest of Australia
* Prostitution is legal here and not in the rest of the country
* Seasons are extreme with summer temps in the upper 30's to 40's (that's 90's and 100)
* High school goes from 7th to 10th grade, College is 11th and 12th but not required, (many aussies only go for the 10 years)
* Australian National University is in the top ten rated uni's in the world and students come from every where to attend.
* It's a 3 hour drive to Sydney, 6 hours to Melbourne, 1 hour to beautiful beaches and about 1 hour to the best snow skiing in Australia.

Kangaroos are plentiful near urban areas, because there is alot of shrub, they tend to wonder on the road abit, i see about 3 roadkill on average per day on a 30km drive to work (my work is on the opposite side of the city to where i live)

we are also the pornography capital. a few major adult brands distribute dvds and such around australia.

i help run a car club down here, we can cruise around in highly modified cars, and the cops like us ;) so we dont get annoying defect notices or harrassed to keep our cars to legal specifications. aslong as they are safe ofcourse.

Public servants (Government employees) are no more plentiful here than they are in melbourne and sydney. i work for a private company, and we sometimes gets outsourced to do some work for a particular large federal government agency, and most of their employees are interstate!

Canberra has the best roads in Australia, thats why the people that live here cant drive for **** :sly: but ive also heard Australia has the best roads in the world (on average)

Canberra hosts australias biggest horsepower party, 'Summernats car festival' with up to ~150,000 people (est) crammed into one huge exhibition park, where entrants have the chance to win burnout competitions, cruise around with honeys in their cars (showing off their assets) all day long. and i aint kidding. the most common word used at the 'nats as its called is 'show us ya tits'

Canberra is also the home of the CSIRO which is where all our nerds and geeks are kept researching ways to make it easier for us to scratch our asses. in other words, they invent stuff!

Crime here is low, and there are barely any shootings compared with the US, not that murders dont happen, although in canberra alone we've had 2 stabbings in the past month at nightclubs.. there are gangs, such as the rebels bikey gang, leb mafia, small segments of italian and maltese groups, cros, serbs, blacks, 'ethnic' in general groups. whites & aussies, islanders, but they all seem to stay out of eachothers way...

the car group i am in has a mix of all breeds

canberra also has the highest life expectency..

so throw out whatever the **** you thought canberra was and come here and visit before you run your mouth.... oh yeah and we dont suffer from polution here, most of the factorys and refinerys are in the other coastal citys ;)

aussie pizza is alright. but give me a chicken hawaiian anyday :)

melbourne is abit weird tho, some intersections you turn right from the left hand lane (keeping in mind we drive on the left side of the road) its to get around tram lanes.. i dont quite understand it, but it makes sense when you're there....

Oi. I'm a South Islander... :grumpy: It's good down here...

@ Taurine's "ritual" post:  👍

But, yes, all Austraaaaliaaa is good for are the Summernats and V8 Supercars :sly: (although I have been to Aussie (Brisbane/Surfers)... it was a bit too hot)

It still sucks. :dopey:

(We were joking, don't take offence, we only hold offence against Canberra BECAUSE it is politician central :) )

Hmm, might just have to make my way up there some time.

Yeah I agree, Melbourne is abit weird.

Yea I never understood the hook turn thing.

Roadkill near subarban areas?

If we saw a kangaroo in the suburbs here it would be like "lol! An escaped kangaroo let's go poke him!"

there are lots and lots of kangaroos and emus at the national park at the bottom of the Yorke Peninsula

There are a lot of wombats, rabbits and foxes where we live, we go spotlighting sometimes

But then again I haven't been overseas in a few years.

We recently took a flight from Brisbane back to Adelaide from the Gold Coast

If you go to Brisbane you should go to the theme parks at the Gold Coast most of them cost about $60AU per adult to get in but unlimited rides free of charge

Yeah. A 'hook turn', they're a lot easier then they sound.

We list and illustrate the procedure as used in Melbourne, where left-hand drive is used. In a left-hand drive country, it is the right-turning cars making the hook turns; in a right-hand drive country, it is the left-turning cars making the hook turns. The general procedure is as follows:
  1. Through traffic and left turns proceed first, while the right turns queue up as to not impede through traffic. (In a right-hand drive country, through and right turning traffic proceeds, while the left turning traffic queues separately)
  2. After the through traffic stops, the queued cars make their turns.
  3. Finally, the cross traffic proceeds as usual.
Details vary by location. In Melbourne, the hook turn lane is just another lane, cars queue while the light is green, and then proceed when the light turns red (and the cross traffic gets a green light). In northeastern Illinois, the hook turn lanes are separated from the through traffic by a concrete median, and have their own separate cycle of the traffic lights. Other arrangements are possible.{...}

{...}Melbourne's Central Business District contains thirteen hook turn intersections, with others scattered throughout the area.

Of which about 5 I might have to go through to get to university next year...:nervous:

In my description, Australia is a great place, much safer on the streets compared to the U.S, and generally, a good place to live.

But the Government are idiots, especially Howard, the tool, him and his Liberal bum-buddies :grumpy: :grumpy: :grumpy:.

I won't go any further, or else this might turn into an opinionated post.

Ive been to australia twice, i had a great time at a place called ulla dulla on the east coast, there was a salt water lake which lead to a fantastic beach!

1. No
2. True
3. True
4. Wait. What?
5. Can't deny that
6. Riots are awesome.
7. Uhhh ok.
8. Mostly Sydney and Melbourne.

I didn't know Australia had cars with less than 300hp. I thought even the lawnmowers had V8s.

2: we have our share of idiots just like the US, UK & other locations

Unfortunately, idiots are universal.

mrnoname, Are you sure about that statement about weak cars? The Commodore SS with 270 kilowatts equals about 362 hp, a pretty decent amount.

You just have to look at MistaX's mustang to know V8s mean jack squat.

Is Rolf Harris a national Icon?

Do you ever have to tie your mates kangaroo down?

Why has the Northern Territory highway now have a speed limit?

- Rolf Harris can go paint queens for all I care.

- Actully, theres a picture of me in the Pics of Yourself tying a mates kangaroo down

- What?

Evo magazine did an article a while back now on unlimited speed limits on road around the world.

Anyway...
Wikipedia
The Northern Territory was one of the few places in the world that had an unlimited road speed limits. From 1 January 2007 there is a defalt speed limit of 110km/h on roads outside of urban areas (Inside urban areas of 40, 50 or 60km/h) - Otherwise signposted of 130km/h on some straight highways (e.g. The Stuart Highway) [citation needed]

compared to the US's 400 horsepower pickups our cars are like minis

We have 400HP cars, The VE Series HSV is 307kw's (411HP), infact recently the HSV maloo ute got Guinness book of records as worlds fastest 'pickup' (even though I don't class it as a pickup), it beat the Dodge SRT10 RAM.

True, but it's kinda hard not to notice, when every single damn thing you do pretty much depends on money, of which the government strips us poor people :grumpy:

But anyway, I suppose it is one of the most peaceful countries to live. Is there a thread somewhere here where we can whinge about our government?

I've always loved Australia, but this drought's terrible, and mrnoname's right with 2,3,4,6,7,8. We're ridiculously multi cultural Every state except Tasmania's hot. (Can get upwards of 45C, not comfortable with most British and Norther US and Canada, where most GTP people come from here.) And we have 350HP+ Holdens. :)
