Interesting thread. I am off to Perth on a working Holiday Visa on the 23rd of October. Any Perthites here?

I don't really know who Readers Digest asked, but I know that most people are very friendly and helpful here, of course theres the occasional ********s though.
I've changed my mind. Most people here are ignorant and rude. But maybe that's because I work in retail...

Here you go.....

You already have a accommodation for the first days/ weeks?
If not, check the Billabong Hostel at Beaufortstreet.
They have a pool, its easy to get to the CBD by Bus, Coles is just a 10 minute walk and the people are friendly. (Lots of french though)
It´s easier to get a Job in WA than on the eastcoast, simply because there are less backpackers in WA.
You can get a good payed job in the industry, that is much better than working on the fields!
So if you really want to WORK and travel, spent some time in WA, save some money and move on to the eastcoast.

Are you travelling alone? It´s much cheaper to cook and shop for 3-4 people, so try to catch up with some other travellers.
My mates and i rented a house and in the end, it was much cheaper for everyone than a hostel.

If you want to party, Villa Nightclub is quite cool. Ambar in the CBD is cool, too.
But partying is very expensive in Australia.
On my second night in Sydney, i spent 100 Dollars and wasn´t even close as drunk, as i would have been in Germany for the same amount :sly:
(80 Euros in Booze in Germany and you probably spent the night in hospital)

The beaches in WA are awesome, the nicest for me was Scarborough.

Ahhhh, good memories. Can i buy your visa? :dopey: I want to go back :nervous:

EDIT: I saw on your profile that you are 31 years old? I thought you can only get the W&H Visa up to 30?

Best place in the world if you ask me. I've been there with a Working Holiday in Melbourne.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to see the country and all it had to offer, so I am going back in 2 months. Starting in Perth I'll go to Adelaide, Melbourne again, and finish off in Sydney.

Coincidentally, I have a job interview in Melbourne along the way. :D

From when I was in NSW, Sydney in "Winter" visiting friends etc. It was a nice place to live with generally friendly people.. When their not starring at you like your an alien for wearing a t-shirt in "cold" weather . (5-15 degrees to me = mild, 15+ warm)

Got to experience Bathurst at what 60kms? Sucks that theres a speed camera somewhere on Conrod. But hell the dipper to forest elbow section scared the crap outta me even at the speed limit. We also went to the museum, seen some cool cars including Rydells 1998 winning Bathurst 1000 Volvo S40 I believe :D.

Did lots of other stuff too ofc, we did Go-Karting at Eastern Creek raceway, was pretty fun especially when it got wet and the guys in the faster karts and my friends were spinning out while I was doing fine :sly:.

We also went the Sydney Harbour where they was alot of interesting stuff going to do with the World Cup.. Was some wierd sort of football thing in a cage and what not.. On the World Cup thing watching the funny England keeper fail vs USA was just epic we laughed for days on that..

I could go on a bit but you get the jist . (Was there for a month and a half so yeah :))

Perth is my birthplace, and I've lived here for nearly 20 years. Do you know where you will be staying? The best place to hang out (by far) is east of Perth, from Nedlands through to Cottesloe... Anything around Stirling highway is awesome. Anything north of the city is rubbish, and anything east or south of the river is pretty decent. Just don't go to places like Balga or Kwinana (they're full of crazy people). And don't talk to anyone wearing a high-visibility jacket and a beard.

Because many people come over to Western Australia for mining jobs and earn good money, food, booze, and houses are very expensive. So be a little bit prepared.

As for things to do... There's really not a lot. Make sure you pack your green mankini for the beaches though. Cottesloe is a great beach to hang around, have some fish and chips and watch the sunset. My personal favourite beach is Leighton, because there is more free space, less rocks and better surf. Cottesloe is the most popular and can get very crowded in the middle of the day.

The city is tiny. It only takes a few hours to explore the arcades and shops... It's nowhere near as good as cities like Melbourne. You should also have a quick visit to Kings Park, and go to a few restaurants in Fremantle. ;)

Hope that helps a bit.
