Also, what have you been neglecting?

Nothing, what I meant was GTP wasn't cooperating. It is "only" 4000 characters, and I'm pretty sure the limit is higher than that.

So we are not doing a Land Shark one-make racing series this time around? Consider me extremely disappointed, Morten, I thought you could do better.

...

I did not think of making a one make series with the Mosler modded to a billion horsepowers, on Pirelli F1 tyres and with special settings that makes a Reliant Robin look stable.

I'm disappoint in myself.

Also, does this mean a new intro is needed? :mischievous:

This is another reason I'd try to bring this back from the dead, I don't want you to be without a job either :P

For anyone curious about the "having something in mind" and it being "overlooked" part:

I hope you'll want to as much as I do, and that isn't even showing all the different models from that set (all of which have CarViewer, by the way). Yep, some '65 class historic sports and touring cars, brought to you by a GT Legends conversion that isn't P&G.

I'm thinking three rounds: Sebring, Fuji and (of course) Le Mans, each of them hosting the most prestigious sports car event on their side of the planet back then. Granted, Fuji wouldn't be 100% period correct since there was no Japanese Grand Prix in '65, but eh, close enough, which also says a lot about how in-depth the specs will be - if a car is seriously overpowered, yes, it'll be slowed down, but that's about it. Most of all, it's there for fun.

I get home in time to read WHAT?

Here's the gif I wanted earlier and it works...

NOW it's not enough! I need one with Daniel, Austin, Macho Man, AND Kool-Aid at the same time!

Lesse what I can make out in that pic. I see Cobras, Corvettes, Mustangs, Minis, SLs, looks like an Elan, and...is that a Jag? And Alfas?! Even if we don't run them as a series, I want the templates.

Watching the IAD Land Shark bomb has just given me a really stupid idea for how to assign cars for the historics. I'm not sure how well it'll actually work, but it could be quite fun, even if it's only for that one series and doesn't really have any effect.

I'm scared.

Well well, the plot thickens... and it hasn't thickned towards something safe, of course. How is the Land Shark going to factor in for car choice? Are we going to hold auctions to decide which car goes where through brib... er, I mean, careful planning?

Also, I do commend you on this whole classic series thing; it's unique, it's stable and if the balancing works out, it'll be evenly-matched. If anything, I only have one question; if we're using a GT Legends mod, why not actually use GT Legends?

That's an easy one: because the Steam version has decided it doesn't want to work and I don't have the patience to find a physical copy.

That, and I have a billion track mods for GTR2, so I won't need to look for them for another game. And I'd probably run out of space on my harddrive in the process

Well that double answers it, thanks for clarifying. Although it sucks that the Steam version decided to be an old wuzzack, now that it could've been part of GTP B-Spec history... So much for that, Steam version!

But yes, I can understand your choice. I am not complaining in the slightest, mind you, it is amazing to see these old legends involved in a B-Spec series. Even if it is supposed to be the secondary attraction to the Porsche series, I suspect it will attract plenty of interested folks...

I wouldn't even call it a secondary series. It's more of a prologue/concept that I may have already developed a few too many ideas for. The question I have now is whether or not all that is too in-depth.

Well that depends on just how deep those ideas are. If you're already thinking of different setups, specialized classes and whatnot, that means you're going too deep. Just put the cars in the classes GT Legends featured and see how that works out. At best, you can tweak some cars to be less powerful and whatnot (as you mentioned before), but I'd say that's the most you can do...

Pretty cool to try something different. With all due respect, I have nothing against vintage/classic racing or anything, but I just don't really like vintage racing too much. It's kind of why I have considered getting the Power and Glory mod for GTR2 rather than have already downloaded it for example. I hope this deal will go better than the previous series for you.

..I may have forgotten that window templates don't work like they're supposed to right out ot the box and needs some manual labo(u)r to do transparency properly. This has sort of put everything a little off schedule, but it should be manageable. It's still October.

I have also just thought of something I want to include in the reborn Porsche Cup. It may or may not involve memes.

..yeah, I can't get the templates to work the way I want them to. Why does transparency on window templates never seem to work right out of the box and require this much attention? It obviously has been a thing at some point in their lives..?

In case anyone has a technique or is just better at it than I am and feel like helping out, here, have fun.

Well it's not difficult to fix them, but it would certainly be time consuming. You just need to make the "glass" parts of the window on the alpha layer a light grey and they should be transparent. If you sent out a list of the exact cars that would be used and we split the work between 3 or 4 of us it would probably be manageable. I don't have GTR2 so I wouldn't be able to check my work, but I'd still be happy to help.

How does it not work? All I've ever done for windows is lower the opacity on the base layer and it's seemed to work.

Y'see, that's the thing. What I'd normally do is just copy-paste whatever needed to be transparent from one of the premade ones and take it from there, but these have just decided to not turn out decent on my end.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong (which wouldn't surprise me, quite frankly), but @aarror suggestion gives me the same exact results (albeit much faster) and @BKGlover doesn't satisfy my OCD.

As for which ones will be used this time around, it's mainly the TC-65 and GTC-65, but I would say having the others done and ready would be nice in case of an expansion.

Because things for the historics most likely won't be ready for this time around (or at least not this week), I figured I'd flesh out some of the things I'm toying around with for the Porsches, if those are still interesting:

First off, remember when I said I had two entries?

GRAB_014.jpg

..yeah.

Because this is a total reset, these guys will be occupying #(0)0 and #(0)1, for no other reason than because you now can't.

Below is a list of all the other things that are floating around in my head right now. Remember, this is just a suggestion - if you'd rather it be the more traditional style, I can roll with that (I wonder how many tyre-related jokes I can slip in here), all points are up for negotiation.

    • Features
      • Features that are pretty much ready:
        • Each of the six race weeks will remain one race, set at 30 minutes. So exactly the same as the original Porsche Cup.
        • Tyre wear and fuel usage will be turned off
      • Features being worked on:
        • Mechanical failures will be turned off and cars will not take damage, mainly to eliminate the chance of the historically derpy AI doing derp things and screwing everybody over by necessitating a trip to the pits in a race that shouldn't normally require a pit stop. Also, if approved by you, it allows them to be a little more aggressive.
    • Simplified, almost NFS Underground style upgrade system, with various bits of the car having three levels of upgrades.
      • What I'm pretty certain will make it:
        • Engine
        • Weight
        • Tyres
        • Aerodynamics
      • Upgrades I hope to include:
        • Brakes
        • Whatever else I can find.

Each upgradeable "part" has three upgrade levels. You'll need to have upgraded a part to level 1 before being able to upgrade to level 2, etc.

Each upgrade costs 1 Upgrade Token. At the start of the season, everyone will get a certain, tba number of Tokens. At the end of each race, a few more will be added, no matter your finishing position. Again, the exact number is tba, but it won't be enough to get all upgrades - I want to challenge your strategic sense :P

If, however, you do feel like getting an additional advantage over the opposition, there are two bonus competitions that award Tokens:
  • Best Livery
    • Once all liveries have been completed, there will be a poll to decide the three best looking ones. Each of these will be rewarded with extra Tokens.
  • Caption Competition (yes, that's a blatant ripoff of Have I Got News For You and the F1 caption competition on this site)
    • In case you're unfamiliar with either of the above - at the end of each video, I'll have a picture of a moment from the race on screen, and it is up to you to caption it. Each caption will be sent to me in a Conversation, a poll will be created and you vote for whichever one you think is best, apart from your own, obviously. Whichever one ends up with the most votes wins, the creator gets named on the thread and is awarded an extra Token.
So, everyone does their upgrades, and the race after, I publish a list of who's gone for which upgrades. In other words, when I upload the video for round 2, I'll provide a list showing who was racing with which upgrades in round 1, and so on.

That's about all I've remembered for now. It is a different approach compared to most other out there, but I believe it could work because it's like that.

Tracks are still tba, but I am planning to include some of those not used by the GT3s. Not all of them, but maybe two or three.

I don't know about this "turning off damage and failures" thing; I mean yes, GTR 2 AI is an incomprehensible mumbojumbo of dips:censored:s and idiots, but making them more agressive doesn't exactly make them smarter. Plus, it doesn't prevent retarded moves from happening, which could mess things up in a whole different way. But yes, there's no good solution for something this broken, I suspect...

As for the upgrade thing, I'm okay with it. I like a simplified tuning system that doesn't require me to check camber settings and transmission values. Of course, it will test my (bad) money points-saving skill...

OK, now that I'm home I can appropriately react:

..now that I've bought my own idea of a historic series, I've realised just how stubborn I can be..

GTR2 2016-11-04_12-58-57.png GTR2 2016-11-04_12-59-46.png

..not quite there with the window opacity and there's an annoying white line on the front that I need to stop somehow, but eh, it's much closer to done than it's ever been before. At least the pieces of car immediately surrounding the windows and the headlights are satisfying.

I'm looking more into doing the "easy" alpha-layers-in-GIMP-way. The big problem I've had is that the layer intended for color has usually been done lazily for the template, and thus having to cut out the windows manually anyway. I *think* I have come up with a stupidly simple solution to that, and hopefully, fingers crossed, that, along with the remaining 19 window templates (so yes, I have 20 different models lined up for this. Beat that.) hopefully being less annoying, should speed up work on these.

I guess it's time I shed some more light on all this:

Progress on the Historics is moving forward, slowly but steadily, mainly because my "stupidly simple solution" has turned out to work (and now I feel dumb for not thinking of this earlier), so that looks to be a go within relatively soon. Most likely not this year, but hopefully for 2017. Who knows, maybe by then it's evolved in my head to a full-fledged selection of things to do (maintenance of the car may or may not be a thing I'm toying with right now).

If my recent luck is any indication, however, that might be the last ever season on GTR2, because I'm a hipster and am investigating a move to rFactor for many reasons. That sort of depends on whether or not my plan for downgrading the Steam version to 1.250 (for reasons of TV display thingy) works as well as this has, but now you have been warned.

For comparisons sake, here's what a five minute job with the "new method" did to the Abarth (the white lines are just me forgetting about the darn Highlight layer, so pay no attention to that):

At what opacity do you have the windows at? If you're doing what I think you're doing, it wouldn't hurt to knock it down some.

That was at 100 of 255 opacities, just to mess about a little bit. It can always be adjusted. Point is it works and works a whole lot faster than what I've wasted my life on thus far.
