What's the ugliest car of all time?

That's quite an opinion, because the Gallardo's face lift was exactly what it needed. Hell, thanks to that, it's now regarded to as one of the most beautiful designs around.

I agree completely - I think the Gallardo looked much better in its first design than after the facelift. Much better.

It can always be worse.

I'll give you a two-second head start.

Well bear in mind that the manufacturers probably had a fair degree of input when it came to the design process. At the end of the day it still has to fit into some kind of corporate identity, so you can't really blame Giugiaro for the Nitro when these are its siblings:

True, but what I want to know is how is it that some of these cars (i.e., Ssangyong's current line-up) make it past design confirmation to the production stage? I mean, yes, the cars need to be designed in a way that reflects the company's desired image, but surely that of Ssangyong's can't be 'hideous monstrosities of metal'...

How do they honestly come to think that their designs look even remotely good? Why do they not produce a half-decent design (anyone with absolutely zero design experience could create more practical, better-looking designs) before they send them into production?

It simply gobsmacks me when I see such companies vaunting their awfully-designed lineups. I know that their company is founded upon the 'as-cheap-as-possible-for-greater-sales' principal, but why are they so blind as to think that not tidying up their designs will improve profits?

Is that sarcasm or did I misread?

Not at all. I definitely prefer the first generation of the Gallardo over the second generation. It's much neater; more purposeful and less fussy.

Why is it inconceivable that someone would like the old Gallardo better?

I must say that baffles me too. Take Proton's lineup:

Two frightfully cheap, horrid little machines designed to be inexpensive first and everything else second. But they look OK - in fact they almost look attractive.

If Proton can do it, why can't SSSSSSangYong?

I actually like the looks of those, if they were built by someone who could actually make things, like Toyota, and if they handled any good, they'd be flying off the lots.

Sure. But put together badly I assume. Something like giving me the parts to an F-16 and telling me to build it.

Actually, more like you trying to produce the F-16 parts from whatever you can find in the bathroom cupboard and then handing them over to some monkeys for assembly. Having said that, they're supposed to be fairly reliable.

It's easy to see why some people prefer the original Gallardo (myself included). The car went...

...from this simple design:

To this more complex design:

The eye enjoys simple but attractive shapes, which the first iteration had. But when it when it was given a makeover more shapes were added and the existing ones were bent with more extreme angles. Both are still drop-dead sexy, but the first one pulls it off without looking like it has tried really hard to do so, which is always a bonus.

I'm going to nominate the Daihatsu Naked. Presumably given that name because you're likely to feel the same level of embarrassment driving one as you would walking down the street with no clothes on.

Boxy design - check.
Visible screws and bolts - check.
Unflushed hinges - check.
Engine with no power - check.
Uninspiring paint color - check.

p.s. i get a warning message when i try to view page 3 of this thread. Does anyone get the same thing?

Norris Wannabe (:P ): in otherwords, the perfect american car XD

double the size of it, and it would sell like hotcakes over here...as long as someone dropped the Dihatsu badge. they lasted less than one model year in the states

It's a brilliant car... but it's bloody ugly.

After being such a clean and simple and effective look to the rest of the car,

they gave the back of the car to the apprentice to design.

Or This...

I actually kind of like the Daihatsu Naked in a Nissan-Cube-crossed-with-Jeep-Wrangler sort of way. I'd buy one.

Agreed. It's utilitarian but the proportions and detailing are right. Simple or plain != ugly.

True ugliness almost always comes from trying to make something "look cool". Trying too hard, as said above in the case of the Gallardo, except that most current car makeovers are trying MUCH more too harder than the Gallardo's makeover.

Mazda and Audi, I'm looking at you... and Acura, don't act all innocent, either.

Agreed 👍

Boxy design - check. Doesn't make it ugly. See Lancia Delta Integrale.
Visible screws and bolts - check. Doesn't make it ugly. See Land Rover Defender. Or Supermarine Spitfire...
Unflushed hinges - check. Doesn't make it ugly. See original Mini.
Engine with no power - check. Completely irrelevant to the looks :odd:
Uninspiring paint color - check. Almost completely irrelevant. It came in other colours. Colour is only one aspect of design and not a significant one, at least with cars.

Disagree. Rather a lot. My amendments are highlighted above.

Jeez, that's what I hate about this place. People are so quick to argue with anything you write. If you have a different opinion fair enough but you don't need to turn it into a frickin' John Grisham court trial.

Sucks to be you. If you aren't happy to be involved in a bit of debate then you know where the door is. I quite enjoy it, so I'm not going to avoid posting just because it upsets someone if I disagree with them.

You gave an opinion, he gave his.
What exactly is the problem?

If you want everyone to agree with what you say, you shouldn't be saying anything. Hint freakin' hint.

Edit: I think the Kia Picanto is ugly now, whereas it used to be a bit of a looker.

Don't anyone dare disagree.

Not at all. Like I said, everyone has their own opinions.

What I found objectionable was homeforsummer's quoting of my post and his/her 'amending' of every single point in bold and going so far as to cite other cars which fit the description. The post just struck me as total overkill.

It's better then a lame disagreement like "you're wrong" or "fail". At least there was supporting points to his disagreement. There is nothing wrong with that.

Ever thought your 911 GT3 was a bit too good looking?
