Catholicism argument is a hard one for me. The original discussion was about how Catholicism was a major contribution Portuguese made to Japan. In this sense, @Imari is absolutely correct. It was fought off, Catholicism was pretty much put down for good in Japan. Now, did it influence politics in Japan? @Tornado is absolutely correct here. Japanese government at the time(should be Tokugawa Bakufu), they did see it as a threat & did force it out of the country.
