Content is king! More = better.

That's why even if it was a best seller and a really beautiful game, I can't stand GT3 much because it felt small in some ways...

I could not believe when I first read at a magazine that GT2 would have 597 cars.

Imagine that in 1999. Mindblowing!

Yep and those 600 cars were actually a good representation of the content and the automotive scene as a whole.

Venturi, RUF (more than the usual 3), Vector? yes please!

I really disliked when they started inflating their numbers by quoting the same car twice just for the sake of JDM vs Whatever market it was being sold. i.e. Mitsubishi GTO SR vs Mitsubishi 3000GT SL (J) Also for the record the 3000GT SL should have been FWD not AWD. Had they done that they would have had an accurate representation of what the car was like in the US. Instead they doubled their cars by adding the (J) tag at the end of whatever they were wanting to slip by.

Lousy if you ask me.

I love Gran Turismo 6! It's what Gran Turismo 5 should have been. The graphics are sweet as always and I like the cosmetic updates that Polyphony made. The menu feels quicker and easier to navigate through with R1 and L1. Some folks complained about the micro transaction and the ability to buy credits, but I really like that part too. I already spend a decent amount on downloadable content for other games like Skyrim or Call of Duty... plus, some of the cars are extremely hard to acquire or earn. I'd rather not grind all day long or complete 24hr 350lap races. That's retarded.

Told you @Monatsende I was miles behind, voted for 2

Would have been 6 if it had more content, I'm sure various updates and patches will arrive to sort that. Out of all the GT games, I think 2 is the one I've spent the most time on.

GT4 was great, but long before it was released we were teased with suggestions it would include online functionality, or an add on later. Living in an age of online gaming gives GT6 the edge. Both build and improve upon their respective systems predecessor titles, coming late in their consoles cycle. It is hard to pick a winner between them.

GT4 actually did have online functionality, it just didn't release to a large market. They sent out a full GT4 disc with every car unlocked, online lobbies, and 99million (or something ridiculous) credits. It worked pretty well, but they never produced it. This came out after GT4 released.

If I like something, I tend to see past it's flaws. If I make a stink about GT6 on this forum, it's because I want something done about it.

The test of time can't be known yet, but so far I like GT6 more that any other computer related game. (Notice I said computer related...Go Hawks!)

I picked 4 just because it kept you so envolved with so many things and had so much content. Now that I think about it, GT6 is just getting started and we all know how much it's going to change over the coming months. It is already loaded with amazing places to drive and things to accomplish.

Maybe I voted to soon....

Given your question of 'considering its launch date'. GT1 has to win hands down.

It was a watershed moment in console driving games. It was head and shoulders above anything else in 1997. Cars, tracks, career mode, the lot.

Since then the gap has closed significantly.

Could not agree more. Considering the 'impact', GT1 was something completely new and just in a different league compared to all other racing games on all platforms

A perfect Gran Turismo 6 would be one that has the current gen graphics, sound, physics, online features new cars and tracks, but with a mixture of GT4 and GT3's career, price system and car prices. It's so simple... Yet PD chose to make it hard for us...

Sometimes it's better to keep something unchanged if it works, rather than trying to change it when it's impossible to improve.

For me GT4 was the most complete game so far when it comes to features, list of cars, career mode which I never finished. (I worked at that time so no time to finish the Endurance races, though I did some, A and B Spec combined was amazing with Fast forward function)

But I love simulation...I love physics overall and how the cars behave are a plus...Add to that the great real world circuits that we have and to me that makes GT6 the best so far.

As a game GT4 because it was a complete game, GT6 because of the simulation aspect.

Voted for GT6. (also I´m going to finish it at 100% this time, almost finished GT5 but needed to do the 24hs races in both A and B Spec...too much real life time to do them...no good for me)

I cant seem to choose one...

For me, GT games represent One and only one continuous ride, it might get repetitive, but it gets better and better...

Just like the lap i do in each car on each track, the next lap is always improved, but its the same exact lap...

i just enjoy the ride at the present time, while remembering how the last one was awesome, yet can be improved.

For me, it has been one and only one game, made better after each iteration, I enjoy each one of them equally as much...

I did not vote.
I think its too early for such comparisons...

GT5's present version is not the same game it was at launch day.
GT6 is a just-released title with a few ragged edges that need refining.

By mid-spring 2014, we should have had enough updates for more balanced comparison than now.
Just my 2 sense.

Gran Turismo 4 without a doubt!
Amazing list of cars & tracks
Great gameplay
Lots of events and races
Outstanding graphics for every aspect of the game
New additions like Photo Travel Mode & B-Spec
Nike One & Patent Motor-Wagon!! :D
And a beautiful intro! :D (specially with Moon over the Castle song)
It was the best package for its time.

GT2! Awww it's a pixely mess to look at now but the sheer ambition of it on the PSX was something to behold. The racing mods, wonderful tracks Red Rock Valley, Pikes Peak, Tahiti, Seattle, Rome Night, the rally races, racing mods.. it was glorious and my young self was so blown away by it all. Yes I'm proudly wearing my rose colored nostalgia glasses and I don't care!

+1000000

Given the nature of the question i.e. 'at the time of release' there really can be no other answer than GT1. Not even GT2 really, because the gap between other driving games and Gran Turismo was never greater than in 1997.

For an example of this, read the original UK Edge magazine review. They gave it 10/10. No driving game until then, or since has got 10/10 in Edge.

http://www.edge-online.com/review/gran-turismo-review/

First line from the review:

Gran Turismo: The Real Driving Simulator, to give its full Japanese monicker, is possibly the greatest driving game of all time. It’s certainly the most impressive example of the genre ever to grace a home format

Just to give an idea of what was released in the same year as GT1:

Metacritic rates them like this:

1. GT1 (96)
2. GT3 (95)
3. GT2 (93)
4. GT4 (89)
5. GT5 (84)
6. GT6 (81)

For me, if the course maker comes along and lives up to its promise, they bring the telemetry stuff back, I'd have GT6 as a firm 2nd place, purely because of the physics (biggest step change in GT so far) and what they have achieved graphically with the PS3.

Those numbers almost means nothing put next to each other...

Is $1 today the same as $1 of 1969 ?

What is the reference of the 81 for GT6 with 96 for GT1 ?

Metacritic is not stranger to the rules of relativity.

Those numbers are taken out of their contemporary context.
GT6 has to share scores with FM5, when GT1 didn't have to ;)
