Who's going to come out ahead?

The real answer to the question of why Microsoft is going to the console market is that it does not want to get shut out of what quite possibly may be the next evolution in home entertainment. With Sony and Sega giving consumers a taste of the internet right into their living rooms (TV's I mean), Microsoft was afraid that this was the next possible trend in home electronics, especially with growing advancements in chip designs laying seige to PC processor dominance.
If all you want a PC for is to browse the internet and play games, why would you need a PC at all if your PS2 offered everything that you desired. Here's the thing: PS2 is Linux. (And I believe the gamecube is based on the Apple G? (Cubey lookin' thing). Anyway, while the day when it would really begin to threaten Billy Gates is probably not going to be this iteration of platforms, it would be wise to get in, and establish themselves.
As to the person that doesn't think that Nintendo has a decent machine, Technically it is on par with the XBox, and it will be far more advanced in the area of Polygon texturing. Better textures = better graphics.
I'm also hopeful that since the Xbox is based on such readily available hardware that unlike all prior machines, we will see excellent emulation from our PC's. Especially next year when Nvidia debuts it's next monster and the Xbox is once again below the specs of a high end PC.

Um, it was delayed for over 4 months, wasn't it? Actually, I think it was delayed 7 months? Wasn't it suppose to come out in January or something? Then it was Spring, then finally July.

Past experience tells me that MS's use of resourses have been sloppy and uneffecient. Sony, on the other hand, with it's platform for the PSone shows better promise.

This can be related to tweeking cars. Example....

Take a car with 733 HP (processor). Wow, that's gotta be a fast car right? Put that 733 HP with a standard transmission (coding) and what do you have? You have an uneffecient use of power distribution. A lot of HP is wasted in the redline.

Consider the PS2 as a finetuned machine will all the parts working in euphoric harmony. Smarter, more effecient use of resorces.

I think Sony will come ahead, after all, they are aliens.

Time will tell, we will see.....

Actually, I'm really dissappointed that they chose intel over AMD. I think that is going to haunt them as far as basic design is concerned.
I agree with the fact that microsoft doesn't get the most out of their available resources, but now that Namco and Sega are onboard, I'm not so sure. Soul Calibur 2 is going to be my life very very soon, whoever has the best version has my dollar.

Totally.....Hey, who ever can produce the best product has my vote. I am loyal to no one!

Remember CollecoVision? It was the next console after the Atari 2600/2800. The Grfx were superior in design, and had a lot more promising than atari. So who came out ahead? Neither one of them..... :odd:

Poor Apple... I left off with a IIgs in my home, and I used to run an IC lab at Oswego state which was all Macs. Someday I'll go back when I can justify owning both (PC vs mac)

Microsoft has so much marketing power and so many developers, and the Xbox is also (supposed) to be easier to develop for.

Of course it is Microsoft is during the same thing they did do the computer world, they are copying designs, like with IBM, but with the Dreamcast, N64, and PS1 and PS2. Just look at the controller, it has characteristics of the Dual Shock ,Dreamcast, and N64 controllers!!!!

Whoa there trigger. PS2 is NOT Linux. PS2 is hardware, which runs a custom operating system, that is NOT Linux. They are currently in the works of porting Linux to the PS2. The Gamecube as well is just hardware running a custom operating system. It may have similar aspects to the Apple Cube, which has a G4 processor in it, but they are nothing alike in any regard ... aside from being cute little computing boxen.

However, you are very correct about Microsoft jumping in on the growing market of web appliances that do more than just surf the web and send email. Unfortunately for Microsoft, I think the damn thing is just too big. The Gamecube, when they get them surfing the net, will probably be the most viable choice. The Panasonic veriaty will be really cool, because it will replace so many over sized pieces of equipment.

However .... drumroll please .... Sony is getting every so much closer to releaseing Linux for the PS2. It's got all kinds of WOOP ASS stuff built in, and it's LINUX. Born on the Internet. Yeaa ... it's a geek thing. But there are so many major companies (Dell, IBM, Sony, HP, Compaq, 3Com, Oracle ... to name a few) that are taking Linux, smacking it around, and making something super cool, profitiable, and highly usable for the comman man. Linux on the PS2 is going to ROCK THE WORLD. If Nintendo helps get Linux on the Gamecube (because it'll happen even if they don't ... part of the coolness of the Linux community), the xBox will have some major competition.

A Sony Playstation 2 packaged and ready to go as a Linux web kiosk would be incredible. The only thing I would want to see more, would be the BeIA operating system on the Panasonic Gamecube. I'd buy two just because it would rock so much.

But that's a lot of geek talk .... point is, PS2 Linux is incredible. And the fact that Sony is behind the whole thing, really makes it awsome. Like I said, it would happen one way or another, and the fact that the hardware manufacturer is jumping in there and doing something really makes it cool. The geeks of the world jump on stuff like that. I bet 50% of Slashdot readers will buy a PS2 and the PS2 Linux 'distro' just to support Sony and diss Microsoft. It's the hip thing to do (:

I think Xbox is good though. hope it doesnt have windows bugs.

A million million being a billion is technically correct, but in business usage (eg. when Greenspan drones on) a billion is a thousand million.

Still a lot of money though.

Just my two cents on this - you've got MS playing out of market. They're up against the best market of mass consumer electronics in the world, and given them 15 months head start.

Sony have been doing this for over 5 years. The dealer and supply chains are established. They've got the software library. The PS2 is DVD standard, the XBox isn't.

I think MS isn't going to get near Sony. But they're going to go a lot better than Nintendo - they're going to get their arse kicked.

I'd call that a million million = a trillion ... but what do I know ...

The rest of your post I'll give you the nod. Except that Sony has been in more than five years. The PlayStation came out in the early 90s, making it almost TEN years. And what's so cool, and not just a phenomena, is that the PSOne is still having games produced for it. That's how good their first attempt was.

Ok everybody here is my breakdown of the competition:

PS2= #1
XBOX= Stiff competition for PS2
GAMECUBE=Ok but can not compete

PS2 will more than likely be the numberone console this year. They have dropped the PS2 GT3 package down to $300. Also, it has the best line up of games of any system. Sony dominated 70% of the consle/gaming market up until XBOX and GAMECUBE. This is pretty inpressive. Although the graphics are great for the PS2 it can not match to XBOX or even GAMECUBE. Both XBOX and GAMECUBE have more power than the PS2. Also, GAMECUBE is trying to get gamer to go their way since RESIDENT EVIL is now only for GAMECUBE for a couple of years. In my opinion I think this time next year XBOX will be dominating the market. If you go and look a the game release dates for XBOX at www.cheatcc.com you will see that almost every major title that PS2 has right now XBOX will have sometime in 2002. XBOX has WAY more power than the PS2 can ever have AND it already has a bulit in broadband connection on it just waiting to be hooked up. Do not get me wrong everybody I am a DIEHARD PS2 fanatic and will always love my PS2 but...do not be suprised come next year this time if I come in here talking about my XBOX. :cool:

I don't know much about the XBOX but I think it will be the same as the PS2, a great seller with great games! But if they release GT3 on it...I willl be MAD! :mad:

I'm not speaking from referances, but I *think* the Gran Turismo series is licensed soley to Sony for the PlayStation and PlayStation2. In other words, it can't happen.

Personally, I'm wanting the new Simpsons driving game. That aught to be really cool! (:

I think the number thing's a classic example of the divergence of US and English teaching. It went - thousand thousands, million - million million, billion. Sometime when I was at uni it changed, and the business usage (which was probably US usage) became a thousand million = billion. Either way it's more money than I'll see in my account (even with inflation).

I took a shot at the PSOne's intro - I think we were 2 years behind on the into (just for a change :rolleyes: ) All I know is when I saw Fifa96 if you'd told me Gran Turismo was just over 2 years away I'd have laughed at you. Then again, if you'd told me I'd be living in Sydney and my father would be dead I'd have said you were insane. Things change.

Goes a bit further - Polyphony Digital is actually an internal division of SCEI (Sony Computer Entertainment International).

So it's not so much licensed to Sony - it is Sony.

Good call on the Simpsons game! Who'd have thought it - all you needed to make me buy Crazy Taxi was to make the characters Simpsons characters (the sad thing is this isn't a joke...)

AH! I could have sworn Polyphony was a Sony division, but I didn't have any writen referances. I guess I could have looked at the GT3 DVD case ...

Crazy Taxi is a renter. Are there shops in Australia (or anywhere else around the world) that rent video games? They go for $5 (USD) for 5 days on average over here.

Yeah - you can rent them. But this has the Simpsons! It has 'drinking with mates staying over' written all over it, like that stupid cartoony boxing game I got for the PS2 that in two player mode with beers is the funniest game of all time.

I hate Bill Gates! Shenmue 2, DOA3, and Abes Exedous were all supposed to go to PS2. But bad-boy-Bill pulled some greens from the garden and they appear on the X BOX... whoa! Does Harry Potter work for Microsoft?

Game Cube has some good graphics, but I don't think they'll make it. They just don't haev enough "extras." X BOX, I don't see a bright future for that system (unless Bill throws some of his, *cough* "change," on the table. PS2 is the system that I believe will dominate, X BOX might even get destroyed by GameCube. PS2 will dominate especially because of games like GT3, GTA3, the Final Fantasy Series and all the other sequels to the classics, what SCEA needs to do is get some contracts so they won't loose games like these, Spyro and Crash are to Sony what Mario and Zelda are to Nintendo.

Bill Gates, you really do play dirty, you have all this money and still play dirty for more! Greed is one of the seven deadly sins! If microsoft does not fall, small companies may never make it. Sega fell because of bad timing, Microsoft should be next. I know I shouldn't be saying this, but I won't be sad on the day that Bill is no longer around.
